Should've gone for crowd funding LUL but in a serious note, OP you gotta look at what is out atm and enjoy yourself not look at the distance and get depressed that you cant reach it. Many good MMORPGs atm tbh.
Well, I would pay more money for a game that entertained me for a longer period of time. MMORPGs cost too much money to produce to be disposable.
Anyway, you yourself don't care if MMORPGs ever get any better than they are now?
Not really since I can always play something else. If MMORPGs are the only games on the planet, may be i do.
But they are not. In fact, there are so many other types of entertainment, I really don't want a single genre (MMO) locking down my time. So the shorter the better. I like concentrated fun.
on that subject of why play. I used to play MMOs because they offered more depth of game play then most single player games at the time. However that is no longer true at least with the single/multi-player games I have found in the past few years.
I think this whole meme of 'the social part is 100% of the game its critically important it be the only reason someone plays an MMO and its also the reason why we can never compare any game from single/multi-player world to an MMO' is just silly sauce. it also comes off as kinda clingy. you know the really loney guy looking for friends kinda thing?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
@nariusseldon - But we're talking about mmorpgs. And mmorpgs need to be fun for longer than a month. Much better if they never stopped being fun. I played a lot of kinds of games when I was a kid. but strategy war games and MMORPGs are the only types I really like to play now. Single player war games are cool, but I would rather fight wars in a persistent virtual world. Where my actions potentially had lasting effects. That would be much more interesting.
MMOs are fun more than a month - especially when you play several of them in rotation - this can go on for years and they are all fun.
What gets boring is playing a SINGLE MMO obsessively - this is why people burn out in 4-6 weeks and quit.
Variety is the spice of life.
It depends why you play MMOs I guess.
For me, the fun doesn't start until I hit endgame and the combat mechanics all start to come alive during group content, the pvp starts becoming balanced (because most of us are at the top of the power curve) and the community / social side of things becomes interesting.
So, my enjoyment of MMOs is only possible over a long period of time and gets better and better the more I play with other people. If I cycled through MMOs, I would never enjoy any of them, all I would be able to do is consume content solo, but solo content in MMOs is terrible.
But, that is just for my personal playstyle and gamers like me only used to make up 10%-25% of the community (no idea on current stats, but guessing worse given the direction of modern mmos).
If that's the fun part why not just start everyone there? In a lot of games you can buy it or get twinked and powerleveled so it doesn't have to be a long term thing. In 6 months you can probably have an endgame character moderately well geared in 4 or 5 mmo/mmorpgs. I'm not seeing a long term investment required to participate in those activities.
Its the fun part for me, I wouldn't want to deny other people their own fun with leveling up, even if I personally find it boring.
Also, whilst I find the leveling part boring, that is at least where you learn the basics of your own class. Accessibility is vitally important for getting people to stick with a game during their first few hours, so dumping someone at endgame with all their skills will overwhelm the majority of players....not a good business move.
As to my own time investment, I only play MMOs with a deep combat system - if it's too shallow (like most of them really) I get bored and quit. A deep combat system takes months to master so if you want to be at the top of your game, you either need a ton of free time in order to game hop, or you stick with a single game.
So, a game like vanilla swtor with a very shallow combat system, took 2 weeks to hit cap, 1 week to gear up, then 2 weeks to clear all raids on hardest difficulty.....shallow, boring, not worth the effort. If I found enjoyment in such games then sure, I could game hop and enjoy endgame in most of them (assuming I didn't care about social).
A game like vanilla lotro with a very deep combat system, took 2 months to hit cap, another month to gear up, then close to 4 months to clear all raids. Granted, I wasn't playing quite as often so could have done it a lot quicker, but the deep combat system and great content design meant it took effort and skill to master and beat everything. My brain was engaged the whole time. If I was game hopping, my skill level would have not have been up to scratch to complete all the content.
This is all ignoring the social side. Repeated contact improves social bonds, so if you're game hopping then your social bonds will be weaker and thus the enjoyment will be less.

So, I realise you're anti-social, but seriously dude, its a simple concept:
Doing things with friends is enjoyable.
Going to the pub with friends is more enjoyable that going to the pub alone. Playing sports is better with friends than alone or with strangers. It is hard wired into our dna to be social creatures, it is an evolutionary trait that has resulted in mankind's dominance of the world.
With MMOs specifically, massively multiplayer is the only unique selling point. I know you don't care about it at all, so can you just leave these forums and go find somewhere else so you can circle jerk about buggy, unfinished indie crafting games? If an MMO doesn't support massively multiplayer features, its not an MMO. There are tons of those games already in existence, so do you really need to hang around here and complain about a genre you don't even like?
If you are able to expand your mind and acknowledge that other view points exist and that they are valid then fine, stick around. But hanging out on a forum dedicated to massively multiplayer games whilst constantly stating that you dislike massively multiplayer features, don't see the point in them and think everyone who does is an idiot.....well, thats just trolling, the hallmark of a lonely basement dweller.

hmm ... yes ... because complaining and forum pvp is more fun than MMOs? Look at this forum. Definition of MMOs. Solo vs group. F2p vs sub. RP vs non-RP. It is all about beating dead horses.
Even what you just said have been covered 1000 times. So don't tell me you think this is a place to talk about new MMOs. This is mostly a place to debate MMOs.
And clearly many are here just to complain about MMOs ... even those who like massively MP (they are here to complain MMOs are no longer massive).

That is because sandbox/open world games almost always fail. No one (meaning the majority of people) wants to play a deathmatch PvP game that they can get a better experience in an FPS or Leagues of Legends (and their clones)
Even black desert online, it has PvP and is open world...but the most requested feature is a PVE server or/and optional PvP. The large majority of people just play it for PVE. Imagine if PvE was super limited like in most deathmatch PvP MMO clones? It be as dead as a door knob like all the others. Same with EVE, a huge portion of players don't even go to nullsec and stay in high sec.
The truth is, PvE has a far bigger fan base than PvP...open world and sandbox MMO developers seem to have failed to recognize a huge portion of their players (for the most part).
Blah Blah Blah... if you are calling BDO a sandbox open world then that there is reason enough to discount your view. There aint much sandbox, and their open world is fairly pretty, but repetitive and lifeless. The reason they fail is because nobody has done a good one lately, nothing even comparing to even some of the oldest mmo's on the market.
On somewhat unrealated note, BDO sucks because there is no good group content... insanely boring boss scroll fights over and over... lame group grinding where you're basically just chasing each other around a field and mowing things over on the way. And overly flashy korean animations and generally boring mechanics.
