Imo, the best would be an original IP and forget using an existing IP.

I disagree, the only MMORPGs I've fully enjoyed as well as have been engrossed in have been from existing IP's. Not once have I found an original MMO setting to be interesting. Some of the games might have been fun, but the lore just isn't there to draw in the RP dynamic for me. Pre existing IP's just have a much easier job in that department, especially properties like Star Wars, Conan, Elder Scrolls, etc... Where there are years of work already put in there.

The new Magic The Gathering MMO sounds loaded with potential that it probably won't live up to. Depending on where they go in the timeline there are all kinds of really fun things they could do with it. Fight against an onslaught of slivers:

Explore the shards of Alara such as Bant:

    Esper:

    And Jund:

    Face the horrors of Innistrad:

Explore Asian themed plains like Kamigawa (Japan) and Tarkir (Mongolia):

Or Mediterranean Settings like Amonkhet (Egypt) and Theros (Greece):

So damn many options with that game. The MTG universe logically makes it many, many, many settings inside of one.

Like any game though, setting isn't everything. Just like SWTOR managed to make a crap game inside an absolutely amazing setting so will the MTG MMO be crap if it fails to bring innovation to the MMO table in terms of mechanics. So will any other setting be terrible  if they don't bring a game that feels and players different from World of Warcraft to us.

Overall though, I think the best setting is an original setting. When you take up an known and beloved setting that means you need to be true to the lore or else people will be disappointed. This can be very constricting on game design. Original game settings means complete freedom to make the world work the way you need it to in order to produce the most engaging game mechanics.

    Exactly. Gameplay trumps everyhing.
You two should go to your favorite game's cash shop and purchase a +10 potion of reading comprehension.
I'm pretty sure I read everything correctly.
And your random attacks are dull and tell me that you suffer from a lot of self hatred.
He asked for opinions about what IP people think would make the best MMO, not you or Kano's uninformed pseudo-theories about what makes successful games.

    Get a clue.

D&D Online, The Matrix Online, Star Gate Online all epic games that were overwhelmingly successful.. or not.

Recently there have even been demands for a Buffy MMO.
People will just call the first name of a show they used to like at some point.

The only IP that was turned into a mostly accepted MMO was Warcraft and the success was based on capable devs who knew how to make a fun game.

IPs don't make good MMOs - capable devs do.

Shadowrun would be pretty sweet. I guess TSW is about as close as we have currently.

    Shadowrun
    Call of Cthulhu
    The three musketeers
    Shadows of brimstone
    R.I.F.T.S

I don't think we need MMOs too close to Forgotten realms, we already have a zillion of those and sadly have few been good for a rather long time.

Shadowruns cyberpunk fantasy would make an amazing MMO, CoC would make a scary  detective game, TM would be the perfect setting for an actual historical MMO without magic, SoBs mix of horror and western is a concept that is refreshing & different and finally R.I.F.T.S mecha fantasy would offer a really nice different experience.

MMOs can offer so much but so far we get almost only high fantasy with a superhero game or 2 and some lame pirate MMOs. Let's do something different that still opens up for a good story and new cool mechanics. Anything that doesn't feel like every other MMO from the last 15 years.

No, what Ip's do is set the stage for the world. Things like why you care about it, how you want to interact with it, as well as who you choose to be in it. AN existing IP just makes all of this type of stuff easier to relate to. A new IP has a much steeper hill to climb in that regard.

Being a good game is important sure, but gameplay isn't something that draws me in longterm, nor is it what I remember most about my favorite games. That's almost always story, aesthetic, atmosphere. At least in RPGs.

Star Wars...would need to be done properly though.

Dark Tower (Stephen King, if you have not read it, do so...now).

Wheel of time...again, would have to be done properly.

And someone said it and I agree, Dragonlance.

Wheel of Time sounds awesome at first but I think it would be a very niche title.

"I want to play a male caster!"

"Cool so you want to play a hunted and despised character who is slowly going insane until you finally are either caught by the Red Ajah and gentled or go mad enough to blow yourself everyone and around you up?"

Not saying it couldn't be done well and be amazing. But it would have to be developed by an incredibly competent development team who are great at problem solving and extremely capable of thinking outside the box. Even then I still think it would have limited appeal.

If it was well made though I would absolutely love to do an Aes Sedai warder pair with my fiancé though.

    (1) Star Wars Galaxies (resurrected [pre-combat upgrade version] with improved graphics and new content )
    (2) Firefly
    (3) A sci-fi themed MMO (not StarCraft) from Blizzard would be one I would check out.

I don't know... according to all the forums I read there are no capable devs.  They all suck and need to be replaced by interns :)

LOTR is the best ip for faction sandbox pvp game..

everything you need for a faction wars is the ip itself..

I wish someone had the balls to create this game

Apparently the person with the rights to the LOTR IP has set limitations on how PvP can be implemented in LOTRO.

I don't really feel like it's the best IP for factional PvP anyway though. You could probably do a far more interesting Orc and Allies vs. Fantasy race factional PvP game in an original setting. Frees up the use of magic a lot more, what zones it makes sense to fight in, and gives a bit more control over races.

I think the lore of LOTR actually lends itself much better to a PvE focused game. There is a lot of epic stuff that happens but a lot of lightheartedness to the IP as well.

LOTRO overall isn't a terrible game. While it is a WoW clone it was a WoW clone before WoW clones were quite as nauseatingly worn out.

Wheel of Time gets my vote.  A setting before the breaking (or during / just prior to) during the War of Shadow would be great.  You'd automatically have factions for a more in-depth game.  I'll stop here.  I could go on for ages about how that universe would lend itself to a truly great game.  Maybe one day, we'll get it.  Who knows?

The problem is the IP holder.

Middle Earth Online was supposed to have this sort of gameplay, but it all got shut down. The issue is that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books are fundamentally about normal, good people going on adventures to defeat evil.

Allowing players to start and play as evil characters, trying to defeat good people, goes against the ethos of the books and thus the IP holder won't let developers do it.

It is possible that they would allow such gameplay to exist if the games were set in other time periods, far enough removed from the events of the books, but it is certainly a no-go for the time period the books are in.

Interestingly enough LOTRO was the first MMO where I had been playing for a month when it suddenly hit me I waa playing WOW again, just in a different skin.

I quit immediately as I was done with that model and found EVE which ended up being one of my two all time favorite games.

Alas I ran into the theme park model far too often afterwards as I haven't stuck with any newer MMO more than 2 months since 2007.

Is OK, got 6 months straight with the DAOC freeshard and pondering a return to EVE so keeping busy. B)

This. The perfect setting. Factions. Dragons. Gods. Would make for a perfect MMO if implemented right
