gameplay isn't something that draws me in longterm
But surely you are aware that this puts you into a niche community. How often have you heard people say: "The gameplay was total shit but I loved the game anyway"
I used to wait for hours just to get a group and then spend hours in one spot with the group killing one creature at a time (Usually crabs) just to get one level up, all because it was called Final Fantasy 11.
I played 11 too and I liked the combat. You had plenty of time during pulls to talk to your team. The Job System was great fun.
Do you deny that the Job System was part of the reason why people played this game?
You can have the job system even if it was a different type of combat system. Back then the combat system was meh to me in all mmos, because other types of games had better combat systems in comparison. I settled for those slow paced combat because I always got into RPGs/MMORPG for their adventure and story. I played other mmos without a Job system and still enjoyed it just as much because in the end its the lore and story that keeps me interested in the game. I enojyed chatting with my online friends about what might happen in the story next, things like that. But I am not saying that the gameplay should be complete shit. The game needs high quality in both areas imo. Why play a rpg if you are not interested in the world it takes place in no matter what type of gameplay it is, like why are you progressing in the game for? Is it for stats or is it for a sense of make believe adventure?
That wouldn't work at all. If you want something high school based I think "Buffy" is the only possible option...
In fact, Buffy would work pretty well as a action based MMO and you could add all the highschool drama to it without making it weird while still having the players beat the snot out of vampires, werewolves and demons during the night.
I guess you could do something similar with that Teenwolf serie as well... MMO musical would just be weird and akward since it isn't the right media for that.

I would like a game set in the ancient world. So I'd go with:
300. This is Sparta! Gladiator
It would offer all kinds of cool DLC/Expansion ideas. Everything from Ancient Egypt To China.
Of all possible ancient IPs you would go for one created by Frank Miller?
You have Homers great work but prefer the dude who made Batman into a sadistic maniac who feed rats to a 12 year old kid that just lost his parents?
I certainly agree that something from the classical era would be interesting, there were a Rome based MMO that sadly got cancelled in beta state a few years back.
But lets face it, only one ancient IP is popular enough to pull a MMO: Xena, warrior princess.
A good IP is in no way a guarantee to build "the best mmo"
Exactly. Gameplay trumps everyhing.
You two should go to your favorite game's cash shop and purchase a +10 potion of reading comprehension.
I'm pretty sure I read everything correctly. And your random attacks are dull and tell me that you suffer from a lot of self hatred.
He asked for opinions about what IP people think would make the best MMO, not you or Kano's uninformed pseudo-theories about what makes successful games.
Get a clue.
Yeah - someone asks for an opinion what color of a car makes the best car.
Maybe telling that person the color is not what makes the car best is something that is worth bringing up?
Hmm.....
If you can't respond to the spirit of the question, then maybe you should just walk away? Seriously your half baked theories and (*coughbullshitcough*) 'insider information' are just old at this point. It was a simple question and if you can't answer it then simply shut up and move along.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

Mmmmm, Xena
Whenever I consider the question of "best", I have to consider both the features plus its potential to pull in a wide audience - without the audience, it won't have the ongoing income to keep growing and evolving like an MMO would.
Xena, despite how cheesy it was and how bad the acting was, definitely had mass appeal and seemed to be particular popular with women. Would be nice to play another MMO with a gender-balanced community

Probably the best unused IP for MMOs - especially with the aging veteran gamers:
Not bad. Two DPS, a tank and a healer.

ok sooooo didn't wanna read 5 pages, so my ideal would be warhammer 40k, set within the lore and background of the eisenhorn books (basically be someone working with the inquisition) as people know inquisitors have alot of hired guns, assassins, bounty hunters, psykers, ships captains, xenos, demons, even a space marine or two. i would like huge capitals that feel lived in with lots of people around in hives. or a agri world where it's more like a farming town. the ability to have a house/holding on planets (player housing)
the idea that some inquisitors go to a planet and announce it and do things directly and others keep to the shadows would be interesting, making two routes or various routes on how to complete a mission.
each faction (malleus, xenos, hereticus) works together in open world and for grouping, but some objectives could be at the risk of confrontation (but not compulsory)
dungeons/instances could be with the help of others for a combined goal, like the next step in the story or rare relic etc.
pvp is easy, each ordos against another for a relic or prisoner.
every race in the 40k universe could make an appearence, humans, eldar, orks, tau, tyranids, chaos, necrons etc, especially considering each has ways of getting to a planet with ease or has past ties.
i know the Arpg that is out is similar idea but it's just that action based, so much more can be doable with such a rich back story

That was my thinking as well. Also, the world is low fantasy with a little magic and some monsters, not too many of it but enough to attract both people who enjoy fantasy and "historical" stuff.
Personally would I leave magic to a few npc there, Xena is more about swords then sorcery and I would be carefull so it wont become high fantasy (something AoC unfortunatley did), a zillion of games already doing that genre but there isn't a single good low fantasy MMO out there.
A combat system mainly focused on melee combat with a few ranged weapons, no in combat healing but the players would heal up as soon as they leave combat to cut waiting time.

I wouldn't say Xena was low fantasy at all. There's always some wizard or god or some such thing.

I wouldn't say Xena was low fantasy at all. There's always some wizard or god or some such thing.
Compared to Forgotten realms or any of the regular MMO setting where almost all fights include magic I would still say it is low fantasy, altough in the higher part of that genre since the gods tended to affect the world.
There is clearly a sliding scale but you don't see a single FR adventuring team without magic while in Xena having a wizard with you would be rare (and most wizards were bad guys).
Anyways, if you give the players access to play wizards and clerics, at least 25% of the world suddenly use magic and that would change the world a lot, that is really why AoC didn't feel much like Conan and his world. Magic is still rare and mysterious in Xena, not something people use everyday to cure minor sickness and stuff.

He won't get it. He's too busy marveling at his own perceived magnificence.
Shadowrun Call of Cthulhu The three musketeers Shadows of brimstone R.I.F.T.S
I don't think we need MMOs too close to Forgotten realms, we already have a zillion of those and sadly have few been good for a rather long time.
Shadowruns cyberpunk fantasy would make an amazing MMO, CoC would make a scary detective game, TM would be the perfect setting for an actual historical MMO without magic, SoBs mix of horror and western is a concept that is refreshing & different and finally R.I.F.T.S mecha fantasy would offer a really nice different experience.
MMOs can offer so much but so far we get almost only high fantasy with a superhero game or 2 and some lame pirate MMOs. Let's do something different that still opens up for a good story and new cool mechanics. Anything that doesn't feel like every other MMO from the last 15 years.
Three Musketeers...now there is something worth pondering. Great suggestion.
