The number of times in the last 15 years of mmo gaming I've had face to face verbal communication with another player character: 0
The number of times in the next 15 years I'm looking for that in my online gaming: 0
Generally speaking, I don't like voice chat while gaming unless it's to coordinate group content.
Yes now talk on roleplayers that have been for exactly this sort of stuff in the last 15 years.
I think voice chat is of the important in a game like this, especially the proximity one, there's usually one disconnect or difficulty in communicating with people right in front of you, so when we talk RPers they usually just used things like Teamspeak / Discord to back up that.

I can only speak from personal experience, but i found proximity voice chat was a terrible feature, i think i last experienced it in ESO, it was also one of the first things i disabled, as long as it can be disabled then fine
Why have they been waiting for 15 years specifically?
Not mean specifically, but it's the type of things that captivate and benefit RP.
When I look at the core of the SC Backer community, I see Roleplayers, for people external to that sphere I understand it's all salty and useless and waste but for that side of the playerbase this is a big driver of their gameplay.

The usual chat say where large groups of players is, is where the derps and random people with voice-detection hearing a baby screaming and such, though I'd think it would be easy on their side to have options to say only enable that feature for your party, or maybe just mute people. But communication without it for me is annoying, being in front of the character trying to get their attention to the text chat without success.
I think the more wide benefit is the player > player hail if you saw on the that vid I posted where you can call your contacts and hail ships in your area rendering the player character in your interface under voice-chat.
It's incredibly ambitious to get this tech in one online game, especially on the MMO tier.
It's pretty much a wet dream for Roleplayers, I always imagined the day we could see MMO's or online games with voice chatting able capture the player's face to talk, do emotes and all that jazz, making characters no longer static and disconnected from voice, the head tracking embed is a boon.
The 3D audio positioning was also very good, the detail of distance, the accounting for the environment you're in so it can cause echo and such; the filtering of audio when talking through helmet > helmet and the ability to hail other players in their ships and have them rendered in your ship screen... it's a great piece of tech I'm very interesting to see how it develops.
They care a lot about the roleplay factor, what you find useless fluff here is actually proper gameplay for roleplayers, one audience that has been so neglected in MMOs. Though this is a new feature over what was set to happen before being just a normal voice-chat feature.
Except the vast majority of roleplayers couldn't care less about using voice to RP. A lot of badass characters are suddenly going to sound very nerdy lol. Not to mention those who are playing a different gender... /shudder
Unless the game acts like a voice modulator or something. :P
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

At this moment the groups I know that do RP are doing so in Discord voice chat channels, they got boinkers when they saw this is going to be a thing; fun bit you mention those who have those very nerdy voices tend to play the females lol
Really the opposite has that girl playing that dude I cringed to oblivion.
This project seems to be more about what they can do with tech rather than producing an actual game.
What I really took away from last night's demo was CR was basically saying "I know I said 3.0 before the end of last year but forget about that and look at this, isn't it cool?!"

None of the ones that I know care for it. Plus the above mentioned background noise problems. Nice for those that want it, but I'll still disagree on the whole godsent for RPers thing. Still, I imagine the groups that really want to use this can add it to thrir website/guild ad/whatever, while the rest of disable it.
Although I foresee some major issues with both groups trying to interact in the world outside their guilds. Also complete cancer on RPers with hearing disabilities or sperch impairements, as those that like this feature will gry to force it on them.

In a way, the SC project saga was inevitable.
Combining Chris Roberts and a massive budget is like the "perfect storm"...

When I was playing the Sea of Thieves Alpha, it's all driven deeply by voice-chat to be able to communicate and play any properly. And it just works great.
You'll see the mix of people normally just chatting with others kinda playing the whole necessary co-op communication while roleplaying.
In SC I do not think if you are with friends crewing a multi-crew ship in situations of combat and such, you'll be able to properly communicate and organize crew play without voice-chat. I think in that aspect (oblivious to RP) it's still something that becomes part of gameplay.

Oh, for regular gameplay I could definitely see it being used. It'll be nifty for an immersive experience too... although some funny notions come to mind...
1) In combat are you really going to be actually paying attention to your teammates' character faces? Highly doubtful. So the feature will be completely wasted under those circumstances where it's pretty much reduced to a really fancy voice option.
2) Everyone will be an RPer to a degree, since you can just chat regularly. I mean, as a futuristic MMO, it'll have everything we have in our modern days and more, settings wise lol. xD Obvious trolls not withstanding, of course. Random troll rolls up "So how about that Trump guys? And how do you fancy my neon green undies?" he asks while obnoxiously jumping up and down in your face and screeching in his twelve year old voice.

I disagree. I don't think the core of SC players are roleplayers. Even in games which heavily support roleplaying (like Lotro), roleplayers are never the majority.

The voice should be independent of the facial tracking (by options should at least), I'd see the facial tracking something that falls in more organized play on RP that is not very given to action, would be more on conversations.

Whelp that is true, the game is made in a way here that getting you immersed in the game is pretty much what drives it, you don't need to "pretend" you are doing something.
As for trolls, You'd just go up to them with something like "Just Muted Your Face!" lol
You guys don't know what you want and are a bunch of hypocritical tools. On one hand you say that the genre is stale and we keep getting the same recycled shit and then on the other hand you piss on innovation.
what's innovative about SC exactly? and don't say the facial thing cause its not innovative
The project it's self. Innovative doesn't just mean new, it also means different. So taking something we already know and finding other ways in which we can use it, improve on it, transform it, etc.
That's the whole reason people keep spouting the projects ambitious or impossible, because they're trying to do something different. Again not saying new, but different.
What can be currently done in the Alpha can't be done in WoW, ESO, FFXIV, Guildwars 2, EvE and to some extent Elite. Is it wrong to say the projects is very different from the current MMOs or even games on the market?
Whether this will all come to gather and work, if and when it launches, is a different story all together.
I do feel it's nice to show this and cool, but feel it could be something they do at a later date.
I'm sorry, but I'm calling BS.
All of the games you listed are launched, more or less feature compete titles. The SC (pre) Alpha lacks persistence yet?
The goon squad here will no doubt WTF-bomb this post to hell, but this looks like just another party line crafted to keep the money tornado going.
There is something to be said for playing a game that has all of its interlocking parts moving.

No female characters. The is for the core roleplayers who like to head on down to the Sausage Bar at ArcCorp. I'm guessing with the layered clothing coming in 3.0 they'll turn it into a gay strip joint, punters will be stood by the stage making weird, disturbing mouth movements as the gang of bald nigels strut their stuff.
Hot tubs on select space ships for those that want a more private experience.
Lightbulb moment: This is clearly CR's Top Gun fantasy, towels, locker rooms, bunch of guys, voice chat, face expressions for all to see. How did we not see it before?
I agree with those who say the facial stuff could have been added much further down the line. Current voip is working just fine. I like the head tracking but I already have really nice cams I could use for that and I think they said that tech will work with any cam which is good because I don't see buying another one.
I was surprised CR went with an outside company when I thought he said he was focused on doing everything in house from now on, which was why he had hired over 400 people and had put offices all over the planet.
Why run a live demo that may crash at any moment.

I don't know about you but I prefer a real live demo under the risk of crashes and bugs over the usual pre-rendered shinies we so often see on this sort of conferences.
They take the risks on doing it live, it could have been pre-recorded, but then that'd be the "it's not real it's faked!" usually drama. So damned if they do, damned if they don't.

When I roleplay, I always roleplay a guy sitting in front of a computer playing a game.

Depends on the game, in Life is Feudal roleplay has grown to make its biggest communities, the game itself was friendly for its growth. And SC clearly has this direction, this is where you see the "Immersion!" pitch that was always there heavily driving design; what has one impact in one of the core points to make it immerse players play "in-character" even if they are not properly roleplaying. LiF kinda does that.

Yes, but this is alpha, so the finished product may look a lot different from any kind of demo. Its basically a concept preview. I do agree that no matter what they do someone won't like it.

Well, only pre-recording would have fix at least the complaints about the derps in the demo, but it would still drive another type of complaints. But that'd be the only way to not risk that crash in mid-stream forcing to start over and rush to the same point. They will probably upload a pre-recorded version of it soon.
Remember those Windows OS presentations where the OS blue screens live followed by the most awkward moments? xD
What was shown of 3.0 is looking great, they could have focused more in finishing the mission and getting the payout but it seems the thing derailed when that rover exploded on the Idris ramp gg
Cool, but completely unnecessary waste of time and resources. 9 times out of 10 you aren't remotely close enough or paying enough attention to another character to even notice this. This really only benefits the roleplayers who want to stand around face to face for 2 hours.
