What was shown of 3.0 is looking great, they could have focused more in finishing the mission and getting the payout but it seems the thing derailed when that rover exploded on the Idris ramp gg
Yeah, it actually looks nice. As a concept at least. Lets see them make it actually work for real in playable form.
What I find funny though is that three months ago we had "open backlogs" telling us this was three weeks from being deliverable.
Seriously?
What we saw is at least 2-3 months away from a deliverable, if not more.
The "open backlog" is a lie. A marketing tool which obviously have no connection to the real world behind the scenes. Stop defending it. Just stop.
Much discussion on Facial Tracking being feature creep; though checking back into 2013 for a min... 0:39: I actually had no idea they were already tinkering with facial tracking that early on, but it shows this is not something they just came up with now and was to happen since the early days.

That is your opinion. The production report lying on internal estimates for work based on aggressive schedule (you can read about it to understand it), you also can't be ignorant to the caveats in that page to make such claim, they very specifically explain it. So I will not, I have a decent knowledge of how this works myself to understand this flow (considering caveats, the reality of aggressive schedules, the reality that it does not account for the bug-fixing process in internals yet the time to complete code and merge with main branch and the reality of the scope increase of the build with some new things added to it) and unless you want to imply the developers are all in a conspiracy to lie when they claim those were the dates they work with internally, think of it whatever you want but don't come demanding me to do something based on your opinion of something. why is SC wasting time , resources and dev time with this when the game hasnt been released yet , this tech could be a good addition LATER ON . but now ? looks like a cheap way to say hey guys we are doing something with all the money!

I agree, As they're going for an MVP more gameplay would be nicer than some of these features. The mobiglass video conferencing call is alright but I'm not convinced webcam face mapping is really worth the effort. Let's get a solid core game before adding the extraneous fluff.
But then so much of SC has been about the Wow! factor, the ships themselves, the commercials, it's all eye candy before game, form before function. Just shows how many people are suckers for shiny marketing.
I've got over a $1,000 invested, I just want to play the game not talk face to face to someone. It's time to get the game or at least SQD 42 done folks.

I find the voice chat the best bit of what they show really, facial is cool but voice is core to play; it's always hard to reach out a player right in front of you if they don't pay attention to the text chat. The contact video comms is a nice approach to it.
This also ties a lot to the VR discussion, the type of tech that if not implemented early, will require re-doing stuff later, yet as this, VR is also a feature used by a fraction of the player base.

Because software development is not something you can split up neatly so everything align temporally. Teams have dependencies to other teams and there is going to be time where a team wait for their dependencies before they can continue their task(s). That's when they work on pet/side projects or other tasks that do not have dependencies right now.
Procedural planets and seamless space-atmospheric flight started as a pet project (for one person) for example.
In the case of FOIP, they just implemented a 3rd party software (Faceware), it was probably done by a single person.

Right just like I'm sure the transition to lumberyard was done by 1 or 2 people.
So, you invite someone to RP and then you put your dog or cat in front of the cam and you walk away.
Could be fun.
But why now? Why not , maybe finish the game and then do fluff like this. It is as if CR is just finding new features while googling when he is bored.
You're probably not far from the truth. He probably sees something that he thinks is cool while surfing the net and then tells his dev team to implement it.
Roberts is like the definition of ADHD. He sees something shiny and he's distracted long enough to forget what he should be doing and just when he's about to refocus his attention on the main task a new shiny appears and he's gone all over again

Heh, I was thinking the same thing when I read the article. ADHD indeed.

You can see the video I linked they already had R&D and prototyping done on this feature in 2013, months after the game's KS, so this isn't a random feature that wasn't meant to happen.
So this specific feature does not fall on that list, this also explains why they weren't paying much attention to TrackIR, now that they're able to do head tracking with a normal webcam.

The head tracking part seems to be a gimmick though. To be honest I can't see any practical use of that feature. Also the whole tech requires a properly lit face to work I guess. Even during the demo we could see the guy having a lightsource in front of his face. It can be really disturbing considering that many of us usually play at night.

Eh can you really not see how head tracking would be useful in ship combat? As about the light source, they clearly say it can work in "near dark". That's what I am keen on finding out more about.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Yeah I agree that voice chat is useful. I know in Elite it's very easy to miss someone hailing you via text, not the same problem with voice at all.
Most games have an alarm feature that "dings" when someone sends you a private message. Doesn't ED do that? That's all I really need.
I can just imagine several nightmare scenarios using voice how you describe that would be very annoying - people talking at you, several people talking at you at once, many nearby conversations. I actually don't have to imagine them. I experienced their open voice chat system in EQ2. It was horrible.
While this system is an innovative evolution of the facial recognition and voice chat system in EQ2 I don't think it's different enough to resolve all the ways the system is annoying.
All it takes is one ignoramus to play Bob Marley at full blast over their mic and presto! Proximity voice chat is no longer a boon to gameplay in that area. Multiply that by the number of trolls on the internet, and player hubs will force players to turn off proximity chat almost immediately.
As far as hailing players.. I would surmise most guilds will stick to Discord or similar programs that they're all familiar with and don't require you to actually be in-game to use with fellow guild/squadmates.

In combat how? In combat I want to focus on the screen without moving my head around. Your monitor stays still regardless of your head movements. Imagine how fast your eyes get tired while using the head tracking for ship controls.

Head tracking is something highly requested in space sims, hence why TrackIR hardware exists, having it work with a normal webcam by default should allow for a more wide usage.
It's mostly due the cockpit view and moving your head around in first person is one experience many peeps like.

There has for a long time been high requests for more work put on Organizations, with them integrating into spectrum, and then in-game will embed Discord'ish approach with voice chat, text chat, forums and other bits.
This means a specific org voice chat room will be shared across in-game, web, desktop and I think also mobile.
I would say Spectrum is capable to kick off, when it came out the Discord SC communities been moving out of it, it's currently sustaining thousands of people online in just the web version attm; I think it will become more widely used when voice and in-game integration happen.

It works well with VR but not with fixed desktop monitors. Just notice the demo guy struggling with keeping his eyes on the monitor while turning his head around.

it has never effected my ping when I use this feature in everquest 2
could be 20 Characters all moving there faces around as they talk . doesn't add more lag to everquest 2
