Ive been playing MMOs for almost as long as I can remember. I always had hope that the MMO market would improve but now I see that instead its getting worse. It seems like I cant trust any MMO to come out with everything they put in the feature list infact some are releasing with less than half of what they promise. With most of these games taking 5 years to release they should AT LEAST have a stable game with the features they promise from the beginning. I have been dissapointed with every MMO I have tried in the past few years and I just dont feel like its getting better.
I think its sad that a game can release unfinished and still they get money for it or people say its ok it will be fixed in a patch. Im not waiting for the patch that takes a year to come out anymore. Even regular games are coming out unfinished for example I bought stronghold 2 and literally the game was unplayable for both me and my friend.
If things dont improve im done with it all end of story.

Most of the MMOG releases over the last couple of years have hit the market in a highly stable condition. When I compare it to the release of UO, EQ, and AO (DAoC being a notable, highly-stable exception) I find most of these releases to be nearly flawless.
As for features...I've long given up on scouring for intensive feature lists on soon-to-be-released MMOGs. Developers are notorious for putting out "we want to release" lists and many fans are notorious for interpreting such lists as "promised features." I'm simply not getting on that merry-go-round. I will review the features available in the public beta and evaluate from there...anything else is, as I have said so many times in this site, vaporware.
So no, I'm not nearly "about to just give up." In fact, I've been very encouraged with the current course of MMOG development and release. The market is improving constantly.
I'm actually going to disagree strongly on this one. I'm far from giving up. I've learned to drop the expectations of a game and just have fun with it...if you like a game, but it's lost its appeal, approach it from another angle or move on. Too many players go in with higher than necessary expectations. There are still times when I miss the "good ol' days" of MMOs, but then I sit back, watch what I'm doing and realize I'm having a blast playing. There are times when things get monotonous, but when you take into account how much you play, you may realize that taking a short break puts everything into prespective. As much as developers try, they don't design their games to be played 8 or more hours a day because they realize that doing so would delay development and release, and that the average MMO player doesn't have that much time to throw around. Not only that, but many games are being released nowadays with enough content to keep the player happy until the developer can finish everything they promised. Putting pressure on developers to rush games out is what causes the problems, and the only people to blame are the impatient players.
If you really are feeling like games have gone down in quality, you may want to take a look at what you set you standard with. Games like Starcraft, EQ/UO and Counterstrike don't come around very often in their genres, and expecting the average game to meet or exceed those standards is setting yourself up for disappointment.

I'm not going to give up, but i expect pretty much everygame now to be a dissapointment in the long run. Yet at the same time, looking forward to be pleasantly surprised. Expectations and MMo's just dont play nicely with one another.
I was giving up before I found Irth Online...skill based games gives you so much more freedom it's not even funny.
I have hope in Roma Victor, Pirates of the Burning Sea, and to a lesser extend, Dark and Light and Irth.
Keep holding your breath and we'll see you in the morgue.
The thing is, the games are a LOT more complicated now then they were even a few years ago. Everyone wants "next gen" graphics and guess what, it's not easy to do in a MMO. Think about what the last game you played that had no bugs and never crashed. Think hard. What was it? If you played a game that never crashed and was bug free, chances are it was pre-xbox/ps2. Todays games just aren't the same as the ones we played on SNES and PSone.
Think about how many bugs and exploits UO had, and it had simplistic graphics even when it was released. EQ was equally amazing and equally buggy. The games have to get shoved out the door yesterday, or else the graphics and engine could be outdated and then you have lost millions.
Wanna know who is to blame for all these buggy games? Us. Think we're gonna wait 5 years so a game can go from start to finish and be completely bug free? Hell no, we're impatient and we wanna play it NOW!
So that's the way it is now, we pay to be beta testers because we can't wait. Personally I don't mind a bit. If you do, then next time a game is released wait about a year before you try it. That's how long it will take to get rid of the bugs from release. You gonna wait until a year after release to play Hero's Journey, Vanguard or Dark and Light? I didn't think so. So either quit complaining or go play SNES games, probably the last generation of bug free games we will ever see.
I still say its no excuse for releasing an unfinished game. Would you buy a chair with 2 legs? Would you buy a new TV that only works sometimes? Although I do see what your saying and I guess your right. I just am getting really dissapointed lately.
I say if you not happy with a game or the "percieved" promises are not deliverd, then just move on to next game. If others agree with you and stop playing that game also then perhaps the game company will try harder next time or just go out of buisness.
The games that deliver entertainment and good quality will survive!! Thank god for the free market system!!
That about sums it up for me...
Games like RV and Saga of Heros are looking good enough to keep me interested....

There are only a few games I'm looking forward too anymore; The Chronicle (mmocenter.com), Hero's Journey, Vanguard, Trials of Ascension, and Irth Online (despite early beta, its shaping up VERY nicely in recent weeks). Keeping an eye on Roma Victor, Gods & Heroes, Darkfall (so long with no update...not a good sign) and Warhammer Online.
Right now I'm sticking with some of the freebies just to pass the time.
None of the pay-to-play games have me at all interested. WoW, though
hugely popular, just seems far too easy and over too quickly from what
I've read. EQ2....hah, that festering pile (apologies to the EQ2 fans
out there) was the biggest let down in all my years playing mmorpg's. I
was such a fan of the first one, I really wanted the "sequel" to do
well, but I've given up on it. FFXI, the butchered economy and 2 hour
long party searching ruined for me what was otherwise a very well done
game. I could go on, but to cut to the chase, there really is nothing
currently released that I find to be anything more than mediocre.
I'm not completely ready to give up yet though. Seems there's always at
least one MMORPG in development that I'm looking forward to playing.
This time it's a horse named Vanguard. If they can live up to their
claims of recreating the early EQ feel, then I'll be stuck on it like a
leotard on a fat kid (before you make any comments, I was a fat kid so
it's ok for me to say that ^_^). I try not to get my expectations too
high with upcoming games....I've been hurt before *sniffle*. But I still
hope they make good on their promises.
To me it's all about finding ONE game that you can play long term and have friends in. That's what really makes it for me. I dabble in many MMOs because I like to try them out, and mix things up from time to time, but my mainstay is EVE and in reality while it wears after a while like anything, I find if I am away fro any appreciable period of time (several days to a week or more), I miss it ... not only the game, but the people I know there, the friends I've made there, the community I'm a part of there. To me THAT's what makes these games so much more compelling than offline single player games. So no, I haven't given up at all on MMOs, I think that the key is finding one you like, and making friends in it, and if you do that it's frankly one of the most enjoyable entertainment products on the market because it is both social and entertaining at the same time.
