Turn-based combat in MMORPGs ?

Would you like turn-based combat in MMOs?

i think it would be fun to play a MMO with turn-based combat, like in Final Fantasy or Divinity, or even with 3d third person view.

What do you guys think?

An aspect of it, like an arena? Sure.
Adventuring, crafting, raiding, dungeons. No - well 50% maybe on dungeons.

I was kind of hoping Trion would go that route with Rift or Trove using the dynamics/lore in those games but Atlas Reactor came which is a good game but such a hard genre to stand out in, using characters and story in a game already loved seems a more solid choice.

I mean, you can walk around, like in any other MMO, but if you encounter an enemy, you switch into separate combat instance, it would affect raids and dungeons / instances too.

The Realm has turn based combat. It was great when I played it. I still think about playing it again.

The world is real time, but when you engage in pvp/pve you're loaded into a combat scene. Everyone outside of the scene can still see the fight taking place, and has the option to join in the next combat round.
Never heard about this game. But it sound very interesting, that you can see the fight and that you are even able to join it, is awesome.

Ye, not my cup of tea to that extent, it would seem clunky and slow to me which is the reason I don't play some MMO's already regardless of genre.

Coming back to an MMO with a tab-targetting combat system already does make me feel like it's turn-based..
  • DaikuruDaikuru Member RarePosts: 797
I know there are some MMOs with turn-based combat.

If there is an AAA open world MMO with turn-based combat, let me know. :D

I could probably enjoy it simply as something else to do. But definitely not anything innovative or interesting enough to be a big hit imo.

I love turn base MMO.  Don't think it is popular though.  Played Atlantica Online and Stone Age.  There is also Dofus.

I don't think turn based MMO is popular else they won't all die or in the process of dying.

There are probably more turn based MMO on mobile.  I think Atlantica Online and Stone Age also try to go mobile when the game went life support from poor population.

I am not a big fan.  I enjoy controlling a small group in turn-based combat, but if I control only one character it becomes fairly dull for me waiting my turn.

The other issue is that if there is a lot of enemies on the screen at once you could end up waiting for a very long time for the turn to finish or to be able to do something.  This is why I am not a big fan of simulations like Civilization.

I don't believe that turn-based and multi-player go well together.  I've been left hanging in too many Civ games when the guy in Germany goes to sleep.  Unless there is a timer to auto-skip a player's turn.  (Certainly, the older multiplayer games did not have that feature).  There are also turns when you only need 2 minutes to move and others where you really need 20+ minutes.  Try restructuring the Russian OOB in HOI3 sometime.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Drakensang: The Dark Eye & River of Time are turn based SPG's.  Drakensang Online isn't.

Not sure how MMO it really was, but Nadirim fit this "I mean, you can walk around, like in any other MMO, but if you encounter an enemy, you switch into separate combat instance, it would affect raids and dungeons / instances too."

Nadirim was an enjoyable browser game a few years back.

I love the combat in Dofus.  And Wizard 101's combat is pretty good too.  Both turn-based; Dofus is tactical, with battles of up to 8 players vs. more than 8 monsters, Wizard is deck of cards, battles of up to 4 players vs. 4 monsters.

I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

There are a number of MMORPGs with turn-based combat.  I've played Atlantica, Wizard 101, Wakfu, and Atlas Reactor.  Atlantica has good combat, but managed to screw up just about everything else in the entire game.  Wizard 101 is pretty good, but tuned to be way too easy, and communication with other players is very limited, making it more of a solo game than most MMORPGs.  Wakfu was an interesting idea, but rather grindy and not entirely coherent.  They also managed to make it impossible for me to pay, as they don't accept credit cards.  Atlas Reactor is pretty good, and better classified as a MOBA than an MMORPG, but it's not that similar to most MOBAs, either.

Atlantica Online was the leader in turn based combat for ages, but despite earning Nexon over 100M for a couple of years (End of year accounts), they managed to take greed to a new level and combined with serial incompetence, they destroyed it. Run by Valofe now, a mini-Nexon clone.

Still worth a try-out if turn based is your thing, but know you will NEVER compete with the big boys without spending $10,000+ and even just playing casually above a certain level requires either money or much (MUCH!) experience of the game.

Old school as well. More about the journey than the destination.

That depends, I love atlantica online"s turn based combat but that is because of how it worked. The 9 grid formation with characters that had different attack patterns allowed for interesting strategy. Turn based combat where you have 1-3 fighters who all receive one turn to attack is boring.

OP turn based combat is MMOs - it's the kiss of death nowdays, as masses have completely moved away from liking turn based.

Devs realized - that if you want to alienate 99.9% of the playerbase - put in turn based combat.

Now for those of us who actually LIKE turn based combat - yes this sucks, but MMOs are made for Masses - hence why this is just not a good fit for MMOs.
I agree that many people dont like turn based games/combat. But i guess that a good game with turn based combat could have a solid playerbase, just like EVE or Anarchy Online.

Yes, MMOs are for masses, but this doesnt mean that its impossible or bad to have turn based combat in an open world MMO.

What are you talking about?  Turn-based combat has never been common in MMORPGs.  For the most part, the games that have it are so wildly different from each other that trying to talk about generalized turn-based combat doesn't even make sense.
  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441
Usually turned based MMOs combat have made the mistake to simplify as much as possible when turn based actually opens up for rather advanced fun combat. SSIs/AoLs "Neverwinter nights" proved the concept already 25 years ago and it was fun.

JapRPGs turned based combat systems like FF and Suikoden sadly have the combat as it weakest link in my opinion and I never really liked Atlantica either.

But it would certainly like something like X-COM for instanced multiplayer dungeons/instances. It would make an awesome CORPG (like GW & DDO).

Theres quite a few turn based in browser games but not so much in MMOs...I actually like the format...many think turn based = easy but Ive found some that are far from easy.
