The first MMORPG I played was Asheron's Call back in 1999 / 2000 and there hasn't been any MMO game since than that held my attention like that one did. World of Warcraft was the only one that kept me playing for about 6 months when it first came out.
It's all just shit.
Well I have to disagree and I too played Asherons Call back in the day - played on the Darktide server. There are numerous games that are either all ready out like ESO and ones still in development or early access that are as good as any made back in the day. For instance if you're an ex-Asheron's player why not go try Life is Feudal MMO(early access). Game world is huge. Has crafting as deep as SWG. Can build houses, even whole cities. Sorta a survival type game. Decent learning curve. Real sandbox MMO.
MMO's will always be around, they are just going through iterations right now and eventually will see a wide range of different types. I haven't given up on the genre because I see some promising things being done and I personally feel that we're still in this genres infancy stage. Remember the first MMORPG's to actually take off have only been around for a couple of decades. Give it a little more time and who knows what it will become. It wasn't long ago that all we were seeing were just themepark style games being made...now we're seeing a myriad of games from themeparks to hybrid sandparks - to full on sandbox games.
It really is up to the player to do a little research to find out what is out there and available. If you take the time to look around a bit - you'll come across something and go - "Wow...I didn't even know this existed."
