Raising the skill gems

I am sorry to bother you all with this. I honestly did search google and I asked in game and was told to search google but unfortunately the search result talked about how not to level skills to benefit from lower mana costs and procs for lower HP but not really addressing my question.

Skills like 'Raise Zombie' do I have to keep clicking corpses to raise new ones even if my zombie is still alive to level the skill gem or does it level automatically as long as my zombies are out?

Gems/Skills level with the overall-xp, not by use. But u have to slot them in and wear it. U dont need it in ur skillbar, but on ur body.
