Not really a matter of what game falls under what genre, more a matter of ethics. The point that seems to be missed in almost every single post is that almost ANY game will get noted ,even if real bad but of course then the argument, who says it's bad. Just look at Steam, they can use the same argument "we are an older site now".This again has nothing to do with actual MMO being an MMO,again it is the games getting noted.Steam USED to have a system whereby a game did not just automatically get listed, now a days,EVERY pile of trash gets listed. Then what EVERY site does is the previews...reviews stuff, again ethics, promoting, catering, partnering.
ads belong in the ads section and partnered does as well, they do not belong in the news section where people come to check out gaming news.A partnered article is not news it is advertising. Ethical marketing and promoting, advertising standards are a real thing or at least used to be.If a website seem to be deceptive/dishonorable,other sites would chime in but now a days,it seems they are all in the same boat of trying to make as much money as possible with NO CARE for anything or anyone else.
Go look at the sister site,Gamespace, that Steam listing is merely posting games with their price tag ,it looks more like a Steam catalogue.<<<<<<FYI "this is proper spelling".I was in awe that it showed as spelled incorrectly,so second guessed myself and checked.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
No, I am providing features common to most of the original games that defined the genre when there was really very little confusion about the term.
You are being willfully and unnecessarily obtuse here on a very clear thing.
No, I'm not. How are any of the riders you've attached clear to anyone else but you? We're discussing the definition of a catchphrase, so assumptions are off the table. When proving something assumptions only work when all parties agree to them. I don't agree to any of yours because they're arbitrary, subjective, and inconsistently used.
I agree with Kyleran 100% here but , the spirit of it goes a bit further ..
When the phrase was coined by Garriot he was asked to describe UO , And in that he said
"thousands of people interacting and effecting each others experience in a persistent world .."
Which UO was and is .. You can be in Brit and a friend could be getting
attacked by reds on the other side of the world say Skara Brae , And
you could be called to help ...( we used ICQ back then)A thief at your house in Moonglow.. get help yes from anywhere in the game world ..
Or someone could attempt a lvl5
treasure map near your house and fail at it leaving a bunch of very
angry mobs in your area that will have to be dealt with..or someone
holding a fishing contest, a horticultural contest , opening a RUne
library or a public Museum with great Artifacts to go see,or a player puts a how down very near yours and he happens to be at war with some reds .. etc ..Many many
intangibles and player induced events all over the Game WORLD can
effect your play and activity ..
I found a corpse in E Brit woods one day witha nice set of Gold Chaimamil on it .. Looted the corpse , which i knew would make me Grey(criminal for 10) and stealthed nearby waiting to see if the the victim returned , He did , and when i returned all his stuff i made a great friend for years to come in UO for ex..
The same applied to
SWG/Anarchy Online /Asherons Call /DAOC/Eve, etc .. These are the games that
DEFINED the MMO genre, and the defined it by delivering the same
engaging persistent WORLDS , wether it SWG and your friends Town being
attacked on another planet , or a Keep in DAOC , or a World Event in AC ,
Notum Wars in AO etc..
Keep in mind the these are the games that DEFINED the genre .. lets play a game
One of these things is not like the other ...
Ultima Online Star Wars Galaxy Destiny 2 Dark Age of Camelot ...
Which one is fundamentally different and why , the differences are very drastic and numerous , if you are being unbiased..
It was never about How many players you
can fit on your screen or in a "ZONE" or in a lobby,it was about the WORLD and other
players can effect your playtime in a
positive/negative/exciting/laughable/shocking/empathetic/creative/angry...etc.. way.. at any time from
anywhere else in that play world ...
