With Fortnite on everyone’s mind, it harkens back to a simpler time when PvP was just being born. MMOs were the primordial soup in which many online game design ideas were born and we are seeing the decedents of that era dominate the market. Some are already saying that the Battle Royale genre has been tapped out. I offer a different opinion.

Battle royales, in particular Fortnite and PUBG, in the end, are more fun than any themepark instanced form of pvp I've tried since the peak of WoW in WotLK (passing through, Aion, GW2, B&S and so forth).

Can't believe how long it is taking fortnite to put together a competitive ranked scene .....

I guess Crowfall and Camelot Unchained might be similar in idea to this, especially Crowfall. Since the campaigns seem to be about material acquisition, with the ability to fight over control of the map. Once the campaign ends, you gain rewards based upon performance, most of which seem to be tied to the Eternal Kingdom.

It has already been played as a team from the first days be it correct or not it just happens.
Not much fun for the soloist who encounters 4/5/6 people all teaming up.
So in a way these have all been sloppy lazy designs, just toss out a generated map and go pvp.

Good thing is it's easy to grab substantial part of the BR market (if you already have a BR game near completion) considering existing games are exceedingly bad: PUBG has 53% ("semi-garbage") rating on Steam and after trying Fortnite I feel it isn't far from "semi-garbage" too.

And I'm yet to see a PvP style more fun than vanilla DAoC zergs.

I was there when these fps'r pvp games started back with Quake>Unreal?Halo etc etc.

What i noticed was when players could not compete with the very best 1 on 1 they cried for new formats.
So then team games, then capture the flag then domination players kept looking for a different spot in hopes they could compete at the very top.

Sure team games can on paper offer some different strategies ,i have watched these team games during the world championships and imo they make the combat worse.
Example...A team will utilize 2 players to secure a key point on a map and stay there 24/7.I got tired of watching one small area of a map constantly played instead of the entire map.

When you have a 1 on 1 game, then the entire map is usable, you can't now just camp that ONE armor or that ONE health pack because that player will just go to other areas of the map to heal up or get a different armor.

So imo a team game becomes less freedom of movement and a more controlled area.Controlled area is better for a rpg game than a fps game.I don't want to be running all over in a rpg but in a fps'r game, most certainly i am .

Fortnite BR would be a lot better if they just added a pvpve mode. Have husks rush in from the storm while it moves in. Having a few elite husks run in and wreck bases would be great and it would make the games even more competitive. They can keep the old modes for the people who don't care about Vs The World mode but i think adding npc attackers would add a new layer of fun and sometimes frustration to the game.

People want to play as a team because it's fun to play with friends.....you keep talking about camping like it's a problem in br games....you know the map gets smaller and smaller right? You can't just camp in fortnite for advantage...in fact that is what some of the worst players do right before a skilled person builds over your head with a shotgun....

Fortnite isn't even a fps, nor should it be balanced like one.... so what the fuck are you even talking about dude....

I don't know if adding PvE mobs into the combat like that would work. Having them guarding some better items like you see in Mobas might be a better idea. What they should do is figure out how to use the different classes in the BR mode, and have some of them require less FPS skills, so you can get a broader appeal lie Overwatch has. But when you realize these guys are no geniuses, and just the most recent lucky game company you can will know you can't expect much in the way of improvement and innovation.
