This is why I have a hard time with anything Apple. God forbid anyone who isn't Apple desecrate their precious Apple platform with fun or creativity. If they can't have a piece of the transactions pie, then dammit no one will.

I've never had a problem ignoring their products completely. This just makes it that much easier for me.

    Hmm..

The problem here is the purchasing of games from within the app. If Steam really wanted to release just the Steam Link client, they could, and just nix the steam purchasing in it.

But if it's not a profit for them, fuck those Apple people amirite?

Apple is the person who used to be attractive and popular in high school but is turning out to be really shallow/obnoxious and ugly with age.

This same person is telling everyone "If you wanna hang out with me, you better come to this deserted island and you better worship the ground I walk on" *In Fran Dreschers Voice*

    TL;DR
When Apple says anything it's in Fran Dreshers voice and Bridgette Nielsens now face.

Not many will realize, but, Apple was this close > < to going out of business forever in the 90's. Was a happy time for me looking at Microsoft and Sun buildings across the street from Apple on Mariana Dr in Cupertino. Happy times.

It's not really that complicated.  Apple's business model is that they get a cut of all sales on their platform.  Steam's business model is that they get a cut of all sales on their platform.  Valve tried to put Steam on Apple's platform without giving Apple a cut of all sales.  Apple said no.

If Valve restructured the program so that Apple would get their cut of all sales of games that are played on Apple's platform, then Apple would say yes.  But then Valve wouldn't be getting their cut of the sales because Apple would be taking it all, so they won't do that.

That is smart of valve. Why sell games if only going to take a loss of revenue and not get anything back if it goes all to another company (apple in this case)?

Apple is like Dell pre-built PCs. Dell makes it VERY hard to use anything that is NOT Dell, so its almost impossible to upgrade (unless want to spend extra money on crap Dell hardware) and have the cheapest and crappiest hardware possibly put in for way overpriced machines.

I get that is the reason why, but how does basically using your phone as a projected screen over the internet something that requires a cut of store funding?

Steam link is just streaming from your PC to another device, it isn't like they are selling games that only work on Iphones on an Iphone.

It just seems a bit weird.

Apple absolutely could allow it if they wanted to.  But allowing people to play a ton of games on an iPhone without paying Apple a bunch of money for access to the software doesn't help Apple make money.  And Apple, like Valve, is in it to make money.  A modified plan that involved someone paying Apple a lot of money would probably get their approval.
  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,483
To put it another way, Apple and Valve aren't arguing about whether it should be possible to have Steam on iOS devices.  They're haggling over the price--and more to the point, how much Apple gets paid to allow it.  If they can't find a price that they both agree on, then there won't be a sale and you won't be able to use Steam on iOS.

It seems to be Apple vs Android and Windows. The later two have always been open platforms and that's why the end up successful.  There has been a whole movement with the Millennial's where closed sandbox OSes and stores were their happy safe place.  Perhaps even they will realize at some point that sometimes freedom of choice out ways the security these close environments provide to them.  I have been contemplating a switch to Linux for years.  The only thing that held back was games, but I don't find the same compulsion for them anymore.  I'm sure Microsoft would shutdown third party stores if they could, but there would be too much backlash at this point.

Well let's be honest and fair here,STEAM is in all honesty a VERY shotty business.

Example,we as a consumer/customer ,EXPECT good quality support,Steam has turned more to screw you, here have a refund,we can't be bothered to employ a support team.

This same mentality is running rampant in several avenues of gaming business, example Best Buy..."we don't mind selling you anything but support it,pffft ,here pay us extra to ensure your product is good".
So how would Apple deal with complaints when games won't run,if Steam themselves don't care or have no support? It would be a long string of passing the buck,oh not our problem, call Steam,oh not our problem, cal the publisher,oh not our problem, call the developer.

Not surprising. We are after all dealing with a company which won't even support removable storage (AKA SD cards), and instead requires you to purchase a whole new device with more memory. Not to mention the fact that they deliberately slow down older hardware to force people to upgrade, though they claim it's to, "Ease the strain on older batteries", which is obviously a bunch of bullshit.

Apple does make nice products but their prices, business practices, and absurd determination to keep their platform as closed off as possible have ensured that I will never be one of their customers. Android for life, bitches!

Actually they were running their batteries pretty much above the specs (current draw) for "long life", to have better performance.   Obviously readjusting settings to a "long life" low current draw and lower CPU performance, is just a conveniently purposeful coincidence.

this doesn´t make any sense. I tried the app and it is exactly like the PS Vita-to-PS4 remote play. There is no game sale going on for apple or steam to take any cuts, you are just streaming your entire desktop through the internet on the phone and can also run your steam games from the same app.

    Well, their loss.

I don't get it too. If you look at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/steam-mobile/id495369748?mt=8 it's Steam app on the Apple Store. I am sure you can buy with in this app but this is aloud. Just not this new steam link app.

  • Big.Daddy.SamediBig.Daddy.Samedi Member UncommonPosts: 411
So here is the thing.... Steam Link would open up a library of games available to you that could cut in to profits from the apple store. Take KOTOR for example, if you could stream this from your PC to your phone through the internet... you are not likely to buy the iPhone/iPad version of KOTOR resulting in a lost opportunity or sale.

As a hardcore Beatles fan I will never use, own or endorse an apple product as long as I live.

The second they were allowed to sell music in spite of their stating they never would apple was dead to me. I never thought that the combined net worth of the Beatles and the legal power that comes with it (mostly bad recently unfortunately :( ) would ever be beaten but apple did it it to my dismay.
