Balanced Risk VS Reward PvP

jusomdudejusomdude Member RarePosts: 2,706
I'm getting tired of PvE MMOs...They're getting pretty boring. Can anyone recommend a game with balanced risk vs reward PvP? Crowfall seems like it might be the closest to balanced but IDK since I haven't played it since it's unfinished. I'd like a game with some kind of newb protection too so I can at least get a foot in the door without being constantly ganked.

How do you balance risk vs reward in PVP in which some players are massively stronger than others due to level and gear differences?

I think your question hints pretty much at that answer.
You either need to change massively to slightly or you only reward people from beating stronger opponents.

That doesn't solve the problem of zergs hunting down small bands of players.

Anyways, the higher your chanses are for failure, the better rewards. If you can't fail you shouldn't be rewarded either (that goes for PvE as well).

The current focus on levels and gear sadly gives you a pretty bad PvP experience in many fights, either you win or you loose no matter your tactics or skill, your character is just too strong or too weak to make things exciting.

Sadly, few MMOs have really got this. The standard MMO mechanics are built for PvE, not PvP. We seen a few good games in the past but even the best PvP games (like DaoC) could have been better.

There are some games that use different methods to try to fix that, like only allowing you to attack people in a certain level range, instancing you to people in the right range or maxing out the level of anyone entering a PvP zone but those are solutions that try to fix a combat & experience system not really made for PvP.

As I see it Your charcter should become more powerful as you play but not 100 times more as most games do, twice as powerful would allow far better PvP while still giving us progression.

I would say EvE... but plex, but skill injections...So it has risk to you, that won't bother shove your spendings into the game.

Also, decades old accounts ganking people on the first game hours... so, yeah.

Idk if there is one with risk anymore, to be honest. Unless you would consider losing xp (or a consumable) a risk.
I was in a group last time I played EVE that was centered around bringing in high quantities of new players, getting them in a ship worth under 2 mil ISK you could train into in less than 24 hours, forming fleets, and ganking the crap out of people in battleships and T3 cruisers.

No risk in ganking newbs? My ISK efficiency was 99% for awhile in that corp I believe, and I made a new account when I played in it.

You are your fleet. Not your character. Not your ship.

The last I played was Age of Wushu OP.

Funny some one of these responses. Kinda shows they’ve never played a pvp mmorpg where you have to think is killing this person worth the risk of what could come after.

how bad do I need it? Will this person retaliate? Will this start a war? Will bounty hunters come after me?

You can try some of the darkfall games, but the graphics are weak and the game is probably low population. Same as mortal online, crap graphics, buggy, you get ganked, but very deep.

EVE is great if you can beat the learning curve.

Try lineage 2 may have that. Also, bless has PvP but the game is not optimized on so many phases.

Darkfall and Mortal Online do not have functioning Risk vs. Reward systems. The most dangerous areas in the entire game are the areas right outside starter cities. The consequences for ganking newbs are a slap on the wrist.

Going into the deepest most dangerous areas and doing the highest end content is actually safer than farming goblins outside Heart of Eanna.

Even EVE I would say you are more likely to encounter gankers in low-sec than null-sec. But at least security zones offer some level of protection. There is no protection in Mortal/Darkfall if you venture beyond the towns where there is NO content.

If you're willing to program AI.  Screeps is an outstanding game and probably the most balanced attacker VS defender game.    Basically an AI programming RTS at MMO scale, that uses RPG mechanics to stop unlimited growth.

If you want a game that does the whole Risk Reward thing well.  EVE is probably the best bet.

If you want to just YOLO balanced PvP mechanics.   Worlds Adrift is a fun mix between  Space Engineers and Rust.  Though unlike those two their servers can actually work at MMO scale.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I was about to say Eve as a boiler plate reply... it's more or less the poster child of risk vs reward PvP.  However, from personal experience, you should also look into Vendetta Online if that's your sort of thing. There is newb protection, and I'm proud to say there are currently no pay-to-win aspects: it's all up to how you, the player, play the game.

Some items are worth millions of credits, so... yeah.
