What setting would you like?

I really believed somebody's already opened a discussion like this in the past, but couldn't find one with the search function so I'm opening one myself.
What setting would you like to see and try out in a new MMO? Could be generic or something from movies / books etc.

I've recently rewatched the whole Pirates of The Carribean movie franchise and I got interested in the setting, no necessarily need to focus the gameplay around pirates themselves tho.

Vampire the Masquerade and the Pirate era themed one are good ideas.

But it is not just what we like it is what will fly, MMORPG players seem set in their ways. Fantasy with humans seems to be the best liked theme. The more you move away from that the more likely the setting is not seen as that good. From Wild West to modern horror they do not seem to pull the crowds so much.

How important is that? Well I would suggest that if your MMO is already a niche because of gameplay, making it niche because of setting s not the best idea. Even in AAA MMOs going out of that envelope is rare and not appreciated it seems.

For me I would love to see a Darksun game based on the 2E world.  That isn't going to happen though. . but that is what this thread is for :)

Exactly, venture in the realm of dreams.
To be honest, I'm not even that big of a fan of pirates themselves, I mostly like the colonial setting in the caribbean, although a pirate based sandbox sounds intriguing.
I've come to get sick of the high fantasy setting tbh, also for what that usually implies for the combat system and skills.

From the wiki, though this snippet is way, way too succinct to actually cover all the nuance of the setting:

    Concept[edit]

The game uses the cursed, immortal vampiric condition as a backdrop to explore themes of morality, depravity, the human condition (or appreciation of the human condition in its absence), salvation, and personal horror.[citation needed] The gloomy and exaggerated version of the real world that the vampires inhabit, called the "World of Darkness," forms an already bleak canvas against which the stories and struggles of characters are painted. The themes that the game seeks to address include retaining the character's sense of self, humanity, and sanity, as well as simply keeping from being crushed by the grim opposition of mortal and supernatural antagonists and, more poignantly, surviving the politics, treachery, and often violent ambitions of their own kind.

I would like a 2nd attempt at the Warhammer thing, this time with 3 faction RvR and less sitting bored at flag timers and PvDoor.

I've never played a Warhammer game, but read some lore: I would say "overwhelming", too much. Also the design of things... Too heavy for my tastes!

You're like 20 years late.  Darksun Online was one of the first online games I played.

These are great ideas, good to Dark Suns and Warhammer (revised) put in.

How about Numenera, again not great for the rules I mentioned, but you do have humans and it has a sort of fantasy/Sci-fi loo.
  • ChimborazoChimborazo Member UncommonPosts: 146
Always wondered why Sci-fi has less appealing than Fantasy (to myself included) even if the trend is probably changing

But it is also full of Toredor posers who look like Tom Cruise in Vampire Lestat or Kate Beckinsale in Underworld. :D

    Asheron's Call // Horizons(Istaria) -- The Dragons of Dereth.

So you would have all the races and monsters of Dereth and Istaria, done with modern graphics, while having the racial choices of Istaria including Dragons.

I'm not familiar with most of the things you're bringing up!  :/

I'm also curious about an Avatar: The Last Airbender setting. They inspired to a lot of cultures you don't see often around, I also liked how the "magic" is integrated in the world and in the fights

Well if I am going to pick a setting that is already in existence..  like from a Movie or a Book.

    Hellraiser.

A very vast and amazing setting... and new twist on a survival game.

Iv always had this fantasy MMO in my head of a Cowboys and Indians theme while done in very cartooney WOW style graphics. It would very loosely stick to historical accuracy and some timelines would not match. Again Im not talking about anything like red dead redemtion , Think world of warcraft on a old west setting

    Graphics : WOW Style

    Map:  United States and Mexico

Factions : American Indians, US Cowboys & Bandits , Mexican Cowboys & banditos, Aztec Indians

Classes : American and Aztec Indians - Archer-warrior-shaman ect ect
                  Cowboys/Outlaws -  Sheriff - Blacksmith-Bounty Hunter-Swindler/Card cheat ect ect

Mobs raids & bosses: Would not only include the obvious of wild animals and outlaw gangs but also alot of folklore and legends, Think Secret World...  Ie ghosts, giants, mothman , swamp beast ect ect.

Masquerade would be my first choice as well.  Next would be Westworld and The Expanse.  A decent Game of Thrones MMO would be fun, fighting or playing as a white walker with an ice dragon.

I absolutely love the Art design and world of Dark Souls so something akin to that would be great. Also, I second the world of Elric of Melnibone.

Young Kingdoms from Eric of Menilbone
Now this ticks all the rules I mentioned; fantasy, humans, high level of magic. It also has a two faction setup, more when you think that Chaos and even Law ((this is where Warhammer got that from young reader ;) )) might take sides against those in their own faction. The setting is great for seafaring gameplay, you as the hero (not a favourite of mine), and wastelands for a sandbox survival part of the game maybe?

Some MMOs have Steampunk elements with industrial Sci-fi  gear, weapons, and mounts.  I've never gotten use to guns mixed with fantasy settings, but it is what it is.

Oh and Babylon 5 would be a good MMO.

If you've read the books, you know there's more to it than just two factions. For instance, you also have Tanelorn, and the neutral gods, which play a major role.
It has been so long since I read them I forgot! Or maybe they were just not in the Elric/Hawkmoon books I read.

Gw2 has some steampunkish elements, but other than that I don't know anything else.

I do like ancient guns. Especially because, if you aim for a realistical combat, you can get rid of those awful plate armors and make the whole thing much faster (you die and kill more quickly)
