alphas always offer a good laugh, but it's not fair to judge a game's overall quality based on alpha glitches/bugs. Having said that, I have not followed SC's progress at all so can't comment on the prospects of the game.
Since when does having no clue what you're talking about ever stop people on the Internet from commenting forcefully anyway?
How long does a game get to be in alpha before it becomes ridiculous and warranting of jokes and memes? That's a better conversation to be had. It forces everyone to come out of the hyperbole bubble and have to put some logical skin into the conversation.
Can we do that (so I can get a few more pages of laughs at least)
Alpha should be [insert time frame] -> Beta should be [insert time frame] -> Early Access should be [insert time frame]
Do you think we need a Gamma Testing phase? Discuss.

Not sure it has much to do with Alpha or Beta time as much as it has to do with the exorbitant amounts of money this company is asking for and taking in for a huge stack of paper promises they keep putting out there; conveniently they add to the stack around the time they claim they need more money so they release more buy-2-dream ways to get it. Spend your money how you want, I'll be over here laughing at you.

You mean DayZ? lol
People keep yelling at the ambitious and complex MMO projects just because they take a long time, they act like it is unacceptable they are taking so long, but the delays keep happening everywhere, they yell at the delays but they don't seem to go away, I want to eat the sausage I don't want to see it getting made, they tell me to wait but I don't want to, damn it, I want it now, damn it!
How about you answer the question? How many more years should people wait before you think it's OK to question if it will ever be released and with the advertised features?
Actually 0. Star Citizen already proves that by its constant progress in its current Alpha.
It's not "if it will ever be released", it's already getting released "piece by piece", so to question an IF at this point is rather hmmm, it's about how quickly.
SC will release, and also, we already know it won't have all the mentioned features and content by day-1 on its release.
Well you can't have your cake and eat it to. My opinion is that if a game is collecting money from the players, it's fair game for criticism.
Chris has shown himself to be a poor manager with little impulse control. He did get some sort of consensus on expanding the scope of the game but he's taken it further to adding countless things no one is asking for. And frankly, I have little reason to believe they can get their optimization issues under control. You can only optimize an engine so much, and barring being able to further optimize the only other solution is to wait for hardware advances.

From opinions around here... I'd say about 2 weeks
I think the people that need a lesson on that are the developers who listed the ETA for a game as Nov 2014 but are still in Alpha as of August 2018 with no end in sight. Before you criticize people for being impatient look at the legitimate reasons behind that impatience. The developers are the ones that set the expectations but failed to live up to them. As someone who has a "Golden Ticket" for Star Citizen... I think I have waited long enough to complain any time I feel like it.

The major optimization engine chances are still upcoming, starting with the next update actually, streaming tech overhauls entirely how the game loads things, no more loading entire PU in memory bottlenecking everything, there's also culling missing that's also in-dev, there's still a lot of major points to address in that front, we'll see how it plays out in Alpha 3.3 and beyond.

At this point I see hardcore SC believers as being in a cult. They are so invested, not just financially, that they can't see the forest through the trees. While SC is making progress, it is not doing so at a pace any publisher would, or backer should, accept.
I don't want SC to fail, but every time I check the status it is clear that people are never going to get the game that was promised. And I would advice anyone thinking of continuing to support the game to reconsider. They are at least a year away from reaching a point where I could even fathom anyone continuing to give them money.
Most people labeled as "haters" are simply being pragmatic and realistic.
FrodoFragins said: While SC is making progress, it is not doing so at a pace any publisher would, or backer should, accept.
Who are we to accept or not accept the pace of the progress? I mean it's like we're all professional developers here to be capable to have a full grasp of the scale and complexity of what they are doing to be able to decide how fast is acceptable, we're not.
And even if you don't accept it, it doesn't change it, it's not just because you're angry about it that it will magically make it as quick as you want it to be; if only it was that easy...
If anything if people behaved like that, it would force a dejavu of Bless Online type of release, then everyone would complain the game released before it was ready, no win/win situation there. This applies for every other upcoming MMO, generally, all delayed as well.

Again- We are the ones that were TOLD the game would release in 2014. It's now 2018. So the people who didn't grasp the "scale and complexity" were the developers. Stop blaming consumers for the expectations created by the developers. I don't want to hear anything about them changing the scope of the game. I don't want to hear anything about them adding features. I sure as hell didn't tell them to go all Space Marine.
6 years ago I bought 3 accounts because I wanted to play SQ42 along with my friends. Since then it has changed so we can no longer even play together, and instead of 2014 it's August 2018 and no end in sight.
I don't think you understand how angry you, Babba and the others make people like me when you callously dismiss legitimate concerns.

That's a beaten dead horse, beyond the game SC was in 2014, no point on keeping bringing this up like this whole thing didn't push towards expanding itself, especially when it came to technology. If you didn't agree with the scope increase and the expansion things faced on things as the actual move to have the gameplay planets not only in space and so forth and the following delays, you should have withdrawn from SC a long time ago, to bring that argument in 2018 is meh.
I don't consider that a concern, just someone who never got over what happened in those first years of the project where things changed because that's not a present concern.

I don't see why developers don't finish the base game that was originally promised then in an update OR expansion start adding these extras. This isn't just an SC problem but they are the more outlandish with it. Like Slap said, 2014 has come and gone, past the halfway mark in 2018 and still not even a working base game.
I like SC and hope it one day launches but my fear for them is by the time they do there will be more or other games that will be releasing/released that do what they are trying to do and make it better.

You had YEARS to get out if you are angry and do not like the project anymore.
So - frankly - I do not care if you are angry NOW and consider your claim of "legitimate concerns" laughable.
I don't see why developers don't finish the base game that was originally promised then in an update OR expansion start adding these extras.
Chris Roberts is the main reason. Plus, as long as they keep rolling in cash he has no incentive to release the game and cut off any new features.
One cannot treat the basic game functionality like network container streaming like a downloadable DLC. That is not the way the cookie crumbles.
And the backers were the ones to demand an increase in scope and voted with their wallets to make it happen. That "2014" date was already obsolete in Nov 2012 at the end of kickstarter and everyone knows it. But that date and argument is being necro-ed over and over again without context. For pure agitprop propaganda value only.

No but expecting the base game that was sold, that was promised, that was expecting can. Adding these other things are very easy to do AFTER launch. But you know he is right, as long as people like you throw money at it, more details will be added(ships) and the game will never be complete. Again I hope im wrong but there is a thing called a track record, this has a very public track record for making sure things are in place to fund the game which is good but the rest has been MIA. But hey! have fun with the eternal beta.

Sure, they already increased the scope in 2014.
However, the star citizen date of 2016 that he gave at the speech in january 2015 was dead long before Chris Roberts opened his mouth and it had nothing to do with scope. The Squadron 42 date of 2016 that he gave at end of 2015 was total bullshit as they couldn't even show more gameplay during 2016.
It has nothing to do with increasing the scope, its about them having no idea how much it takes to deliver on all their promises.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
How.many game loops do you see in say.... Fortnite orLoL, respectively.
For real?
So 6 years, $200 million and it's ok for a game that is meant to have plenty of game loops to not have them because, look, tiddly-winks doesn't have them either.... Are you sure that's what you wanted to say?
