To anyone in favor of M or AO ratings on games: which current developer is responsible enough, mature enough, and dedicated enough to deliver an adult-themed MMO without it becoming cartoonish or sleazy?
Personally, I don't think there are any current developers out there capable of making something like what the thread title suggests.
Why does a developer have to avoid cartoonish or sleazy?
Mature can mean adult themes, violence, sexual content and any number of things including sleazy. Cartoonish is fine as well as there are people who like cartoonish.
Bring on the Cartoonish and bring on the sleazy.
It doesn't. But the adult theme needs to be taken seriously. That's my point; cartoonish and sleazy *can* occur when a serious point isn't carried forth convincingly. Few, if any, games have done that, and the genre certainly has not done so with any consistency.
For instance, all games incorporate violence. There's numerous game mechanisms and systems that abstract the act of killing another individual, sometimes by the thousands. I can't recall a single game that attempts to teach the player a moral or ethical point about violence. There's never a reason for the player to ask 'Should I?' when doing horrific acts. The games fail to engage the player at that serious, mature level.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

What does "the adult theme needs to be taken seriously" mean?
Or better, "why?"
Now, I understand you would like a violent game to teach moral and ethical lessons, and I think it would be great but I don't think it is "necessary." Mature rating isn't about engaging the player on a "mature" level. It's about labeling a property as being for people of a certain age.

Really doesn't matter. Being honest though, I do like the mature romance options in games such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I find I get pulled into the game and relationship building more with these options.

Agreed, My Commander Shepard is the biggest cooze hound in the galaxy. Alien, Female, Cyborg WHATEVER Commander Shepard beds them all.
I don't really care, unless the company makes a big spectacle of it. "Look at our very adult game. We didn't sacrifice the direction, so here is our M rating!"
In that case, I am less likely to buy it. It probably means it lacks anything interesting if their rating is what they promote.
I don't mind a naked titty or two here or there in my games if it makes sense, but if it's something like that MMO that was pretty much just tits and mechs, it just doesn't feel right to play.
I'd say parents, but there is a bit of a lack of observation there, too

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Well in that regard I always thought the only people care about ESRB rating is ESRB. But then again I'm not a parent and I watched The Exorcist with my dad when I was 6.
This whole thing reminds me of how you Americans can star in porn but cannot go into a bar and have a beer for 3 years of your life.
Imagine a video game which you can play when you are 17 but you can't when you are 15 and tell me how the hell that would make any sense.

lol I'm 42 years old. I could care less if something has a mature rating because it has no meaning for me. Though I don't think kids should be involved. Really it has no meaning anyway because they can just lie to get in.
There is no point in a mature rating if its not something that adds to the ambiance of a mature rated game.
For example gore, steep learning curve, gambling mini games, dark underworlds, mature stories/ conversations, gambling bounty arenas etc
The nudity is not even needed in an MMO, but the other elements for a mature rated mmo would make sense especially the gambling with in game currency imo, which for some reason has yet to be in an mmo.
If a mature rated mmo only has gore, but everything else missing, then I would just opt for something that has the best combat for pvp. I could careless about the rating since the mmo aspect is not that important to me and its just really the pvp.
Which is kind of a problem since I really only like to pvp and get focused on a certain class and spec that matches that class which in most cases is the weakest build for pvp, so the idea of a mature rated mmo would make up for that aspect of pvp imbalance if it so happens to have the best combat system as well, then the gambling mini games and underworld ambiance would help to better tolerated being the under dog all the time.

Depends a lot on what the M brings. Most of the time what decides whether I'll play an MMO or give it a pass is the theme/setting and the gameplay/features. Well, and the graphics. It has to look somewhat good. I'm not traveling back in time. :P

Most of the time an 'M' rating is not a 'Mature' rating, it is more of an 'imMature' rating, tits and blood to attract the immature end of the gaming market.
Honestly, it feels like the industry doesnt even know (or care) what the M stands for. The only thing I see different in a M rated MMORPG and a T is that loli toons can wear skimpy outfits. Tera and BnS are prime suspects of this (Lyn females in BnS get a outfit variant that has one with boobs and one without for crying out loud....). You take something like WoW or FFXIV, there's still swearing and drug use but the main difference is you dont have gnomes in thongs or w/e (though I'm sure people are still trying to slutmog their gnomes in wow).

I may be misunderstanding the rating system though.
