imageYour Favorite MMO Abilities - MMORPG.com

There are a lot of things to consider when you think about what kept you playing your favorite MMOs, but for me a lot of the time it can be simple things I enjoy about the moment to moment gameplay. A really neat spell or ability can make a character a whole lot more enjoyable to play, so this week I wanted to share some of my favorite MMO spells or abilities.

    Nice article Mike..

1st .. really miss Matrix online was such a fun game , and surprised noone has ever picked up that ip .. So much potential..

Warhammer has so many great abilities , Some of my favorites were on my Engi , was always satisfying to blow up my Turret in to an enemy rush knocking them all down .. Snipe shot never got old ..*Duck you Sorcs *:)... Napalm also great skill , Barbed Wire , Artillery Barrage so many good ones ..LOL yea Fetch was always funny to see ...

real shame that 3 of the 5 and all great example are now shuttered games ...

Dragoon dives sucked in FFXIV. Theres no logical reason you should take damage from the last spot you jumped from while in the air. It could have been a tactical skill for movement instead of the goofy back jump no one used. Main reason Dragoons are known as corpses in the game. The skill essentially makes you dead in the air.

When they added the Skirmisher Stance to my Uruk Black Arrow in LoTRO, it totally changed my PvP mindset from a Raid baby to a maniacally aggressive solo freak show. Being able to shoot arrows on the move was the best. Does this count?

    Gut Out!

    What, me worry?

EQ2-Bruiser drag, specifically in PVP. For a few seconds your target would be forced to follow you. I used to combine it with the Bruiser ability to temporarily teleport to your target. I'd stand in a high up place and teleport/drag an enemy which would cause them to awkwardly float back to my original position. When they arrived, I'd use a knock back to push them off the ledge and they'd die from fall damage. One shot kills on end game raid tanks was glorious.

I think they've done a lot to mitigate that issue over the years. Also, it's still fun!

Crap! I actually intended to include the Herald of Xotli's "I Eat Your Heart" because the fatality was amazing. Completely forgot to add it.

Feign Death in SWG was a life saver.

Tera Kasi Knock down dizzy before they nerfed it was unstoppable. You could chain it forever and it completely locked down whatever you were fighting. I KDDed an Ancient Krayt once, it took something like an hour I think.

Yeah, I loved Super Jump. Later on they had packs with similar abilities but slightly different animations/visuals. There was a Ninja sprint and some sort of beast pack with a beast jump. I preferred the original SJ though. With the state of graphics, game engine, internet speed/lag, etc, using SJ in a crowded area was always potluck. I'd frequently land smack dab in the middle of a group of Freakshow or Vahzilok. Quick, jump again! (and almost always get hit by something with a delayed graphic/effect just as I was landing)

    Also, to add:

    WoW
DK - Death Grip, reminded me of MK/Scorpion's move that I loved
Pali - Avenger's Shield, I felt like Captain America on steroids when they added that, and liked how they added it bouncing around also

    SWTOR
Agree on the Force Leap/Push abilities, singling out an enemy healer to jump to, and then push as far away from their group as possible is always fun & also loved the Smash AoE for big damage

    Gut Out!

    What, me worry?

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Doomsdays in Eve online. The old ones that just kerpoofed anything within like 60km. (The new singleshots and bosons are also cool but ya know)

I remember being in eve university... we took a field trip in cheapo frigates to go to null and get doomsdayed :) i was in awe.

Also props to my choice for most broken ability in an MMO: shaman slow in EQ1.

If a shaman could slow it, a shaman could kill it solo given time. Even raid bosses.

    So my top 2

    Eve online: titan doomsdays
    EQ1: shaman slow debuffs

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I like the simple things in life.

For me the one stand-out was bashing my 2HD hammer against keep doors in Wrahammer on my WP and healing everyone around me by so doing... unfortunately, eventually they nerfed me :)

To me the preferred skill in a MMORPG is the FFXI skillchains or magic burst.

That of combining attacks between different members of the team at the right time to create a super-attack....and that the magicians can enhance their magic after taking that Skillchain to do a lot more damage seems to me an EXAMPLE TO BE FOLLOWED in any MMORPG.

And here highlighting individual abilities....we remember that we are talking about MMORPG? How is it possible that the combination of skills in MMOs has not been exploited by now?

It's true that the PVE is so ridiculous and the games are so focused on playing alone that it doesn't matter.....

    SWG - sample DNA
SWTOR - Death From Above! Also loved all the stabbing with my Imperial Agent
    AoC - everything Bear Shaman
SWToR - PvP, from stealth using Sith Assassin to force pull someone into an acid pool and then using the Lightning Stun on them that I forget the name.
