Not a cult
Hope for a game as complex and freeform as Star Wars Galaxies. With players political struggles like EVE. With visual fidelity like E:D. With an interesting story and characters like Wing Commander. With flying like Freelancer.

Truth.
Good luck to you with your game. I hope you understand how their tactics may rub many people the wrong way.
Yes.
But no one forces those people to back or buy this game. It's all voluntary. They could just move on to one of thousands of other games.
It is a rubbing of their own doing. Maybe they like the self-inflicted "pain".
Have fun
People voluntarily spending close to $300 million dollars worth of nothing, could have a very adverse affect on the gaming industry.
That's why I think people are so interested.
Most of them could give a fuck if dude pulls it off or not. They just don't want "their" game to f them up the butt like this one seems to do to it's "player base".
Blizzard does the same with Blizzcon.... And that stuff generally does not get added to the web "legally".
I see no real problem with it. If the money spent goes in to production value... That is great for everybody.
Blizzcon : A $200 ticket price for two day convention full of activities (including goody bag, beta keys , other exclusives and a concert (Muse in 2017, Foo Fighters, Metallica were in other years ) to close the event. Live finals of their tournaments. For fans from a company that hosts several highly popular games. The virtual ticket for the live stream, lets you see the tournament finals and concert of a famous band live.
Citizencon : This is just a presentation and some panels about one game in development. You would think they would be happy to share this information with all the backers. But to see the livestream it either requires you to sub or have paid $1000+ to watch.

Yeah, sure. Let's call that the same.
Lemme see. Last CitizenCon.
A few dozen Euros for the ticket. A free Octane SSD worth hundreds in return for many attendants (they handed out hundreds of Octanes). Talking to developers. Hands on playing the newest build. Deep dive into the Technical aspects of game development. Awesome cosplay. Great player org meetings. Wonderful BarCitizen barcrawls. Goodie bags.

People voluntarily spend more than a billion bucks on virtual tank and hero skins in games. That is also "nothing". Has not ruined the industry yet.
And the great majority of THIS playerbase is happy. As can be seen from the continual growth of the playerbase and the growing amount of collected crowdfunding money. A few loud trolls opposed to the game are normal in this day and age.

hahahah Erillion trying really really hard.
Experience from previous SC meetings.
But yeah yeah - the old saying: "Stop liking what I do not like!". Sorry to disappoint in that respect.
Have fun
I don't mind you liking what you like at all !!..that's what's so interesting! You defending EVERYTHING CIG does and play down price increases, paywalls, 27k ship bundles, concept sales, infinite development time, etc etc
SC topics would have been much less entertaining without you.
I'm glad you have enough time away from playing SC with your buddies to post here and defend this gem of a game.
Yes. The incentive is to help create something special. Something that a lot of people have been waiting for for a long time.
Have fun
yeah but when is enough enough?
We all know youre a paid shill for them but this just carries it too far.
They monetize EVERYTHING now.
Its obvious 200 Million isnt close to being enough. They have step up monetizing everything lately which could have multiple reasons. None of them good and none of them at all related to actually finishing the project. Because they have supposedly been trying to finish this project for the past 6 years but for the first 3 years or so (other than ships) they werent monetizing anything else. Which was bad enough but in context (which you love so much) it wasnt nearly as offensive.

The "billions" are across many many many many many games. Star Citizen is at a fourth of billion and it's not even a game yet. It's all marketing. You've been marketed.
It isn't greed or evil if they need the cash to finish the project.
I believe a fair observation here would be if they didn't have financial problems they would've streamed the event for free for their backers at least. Even that is subjective. But still a valid assumption.
Constantine, The Console Poster
"One of the most difficult tasks men can perform, however much others may despise it, is the invention of good games and it cannot be done by men out of touch with their instinctive selves." - Carl Jung
So this event the costs have increased by a lot by making it the biggest event, but to try to recoup some of that money by charging on the livestream front is just the worse possible way to go at it.
Citcon last year was sponsored by Intel and it worked just fine.

Even if they asked for way less money to complete a game they promised would be completed years ago?

Not a cult
pretty much, a lot of if not all 'cults' start out with a lot more members than you eventually read about in some horrific story.
But its like the boiling frog experiment, you dont go from 0-over 9000 you start with a dogma and add more crazy and loony things to it and as 'followers' fall off you eventually get to a 'hard core' group that would do ANYTHING no matter how crazy or self destructive it is.
Irony of the cult of citizens is they are (apparently allegedly) getting more and more sign ups. But that could also be true as some people are just crazy to begin with so this is a bonus for them replace less fanatical followers who fall away with insta fanatic who take less time to indoctrinate. Either way the ending of these things is never good. But more than likely this wont end up as some mass suicide or storming of a compound by government officials but I am sure it will have some long lasting effects on the 'faithful'.
**snip ** It's all marketing. You've been marketed.
I agree.
i even think Star Citizen will find its way into marketing textbooks.
I consider myself an informed customer. I have one ship. One pledge package. I got "marketed" when this crowdfunding started. After having carefully considered the pros and cons. I support this project based on my evaluation of the team and the project.
Even if they asked for way less money to complete a game they promised would be completed years ago?
The game they suggested (they never promised !) to have completed in 2014 was no longer the same game even at the end of the Kickstarter campaign. This is just an obsolete statement that keeps getting necroed every few months or so.
The Kickstarter money is now only 1.3 % of the total amount of money in the SC crowdfunding campaign.
A game that has 100+ stretch goals added to it is no longer the same game that got pitched at the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign. It is MUCH larger, MUCH more complex ... and will take time. CIG never gave an estimate when it will be launched. Its done when its done.
Have fun

Where did you get that number "$300 million dollars" ?
This is how good the game is guys. Buy an Idris now before they run out.
Backers reminding people that waiting a few hours for a free HD version of a recorded live stream on YouTube is not akin to prophets of Ragnarök proclaiming that the end is nigh....
Even if that hurts the feelings of the instant-gratification crowd.
It isn't greed or evil if they need the cash to finish the project.

Project's scope changing many a time aside, it also could mean mismanagement of funds, failure in estimates and the timeliness, and so on.
Now I'm not here to defend SC. But attacking this project with anything comes to mind is just as silly as defending it at all levels.
I'm not addressing anyone in particular, just the general debate revolving around this topic.

I'm not saying it is better or worse, but it is different. And you have to treat it different. If it needs laws, it needs a new set of laws.
Subjective morals or playing the victim or the vigilante wouldn't change anything. It hasn't in the past 6 years.
