imagePathfinder: Kingmaker Review - A Tremendous First Effort - The RPG Files - MMORPG.com

I will not get tired of saying that the last couple of years have been golden for any fan of classic-inspired cRPGs, myself included. Between Obsidian’s Tyranny and PoE2: Deadfire and Larian’s Divinity 2: Original Sin, gamers were able to visit beautiful fantasy worlds and dive right into a variety of problems. It is time for Pathfinder: Kingmaker to join that list.

I wouldn't call it the 'best' CRPG I've played, but it is certainly great. It is a different experience from something like a Divinity game, being more akin to Baldurs Gate or Pillars of Eternity. I'm enjoying Pathfinder Kingmaker more than I did Pillars, but I have an affinity to pen and paper rulesets.

Also got snagged by the first Game Over timer. All my saves were already at a too late date to complete the quest. Eventually solved it by editing the date of a saved game in Notepad++

The game is fun though and quite difficult. However, it could definitely use some QoL improvements.

The bugs get worse the further into the game you get. Game breaking bugs that stop you actually completing the game. Not sure if they fixed them as i have taken a break while they patch up the game as i dont want to break my game and have to start again.

Its the first game i have ever played where i was genuinely afraid to go explore new areas because i was worried i'd break the game lol.

It will be a good game if/when they manage to patch it up.

Loving the game. I think it deserves better than a 7.5 IMO.

These type of games were fun when they were breaking new ground.I own several,i got bored of them within the first week, they are no longer good games, they area throwback to noob development years,we are miles past these low budget games at this point.
These type of games are coming out in drones because pretty much ANY upstart dev can make them, especially with all the free software and assets floating around.
I do NOT want 20x20 grid maps,i want long viewing open worlds, the way a rpg SHOULD be.I would also NOT expect to see through the top of a roof, this all ruins immersion and just looks cheap.
Give me a world and characters that would make me think i am really role playing in a realistic world.

Wow was a first effort,FFXI was a first effort,EQ was a first, are we trying to say this game comes even remotely close? Not a chance in hell, this is rubbish game development, just cheap low cost ,low risk.

What games do you actually enjoy? I don't think I've ever seen you say something positive about anything on this site....

Since every game is so shitty why don't you make a good one and show us what they look like....or just keep talking shit....you pretty good at that....

Yes there are a few bugs, i haven't come across any major one, but the level or character creation i haven't seen as in depth in any game, even the kits in BG2 were not as good. the healing potions showing on your belt, my animal companion actually growing in size etc, and the game itself is awesome, deserves more than 7.5 even with bugs, cant wait to here about the dlc coming too. This could be one of the best rpgs of all time after a little more polish.

Well, they've put out patches/hotfixes every couple of days since launch. There were 2 yesterday, in fact. You might want to give it a go again, see where it's at.

I am waiting on this game. My computer might handle it well enough but I am going to get a new one hopefully by end of year or early next year. I appreciate reading about the bugs being a real problem as going further.

I also appreciate knowing how dangerous the system is set up for failure. Seems very easy to lose and that for me is something that makes a game less interesting to me. I understand for certain genres but this sounds brutal. I hate hidden timers. What do they really add to the fun? They are just a frustration to me.

This review has helped me know that not having the game yet is probably the best for me as I want to play it.

I'm an old Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 player. BG2 still holds my favorite PC Single Player game title of all time, second only to Ultima Online which holds the top spot period. And while I enjoyed BG, Icewind Dale, some of these throwback titles are hit or miss.

Pillars of Eternity 1 was average at best. Lackluster story and bad combat system. Pillars of Eternity 2 was a great improvement over the original formula. Complete voice overs were great.

Tyranny I tried 3-4x, just couldn't get into it. By now (2018), if you're not voicing over the majority of your dialogue, I just don't care to play it.

Divinity Original Sin 2 was the most over-hyped piece of garbage out there. This game felt like a slightly enhanced version of Neverwinter Nights. It was slow, clunky, goofy, combat was outright boring, and everything about it felt generic.

Pathfinder is okay. But it just feels to slow when compared to BG2 or PoE in terms of the engine. Your movement is slow, combat is slow (and I don't mean action-wise, I just mean the engine is slow-moving). Everything feels like you're treading through molasses. Honestly, the customization was great ... but I just didn't care. Maybe I'm past these types of games in my life.

Like some others have said, while there's plenty of room for these types of games, developers should take what was done in the past and push the envelop forward; try and break new ground. You can do a lot of good stuff with isometric 2D games--especially with background rendering. But they want to adhere to these 1998 formulas and simply settle on nostalgia rather than really make a modern game while still honoring some past elements. Most of the games are mediocre at best, and so long as developers continue retreading the old days and not doing anything new, they never will be more than that. It's like movies today: you can't make greatness out of things that were great 20 years ago. You'll fall short every time. Make something new and original if you really want to make waves.

You can take the old and make it new. Or you can simply recycle the old. None of these games do anything but the latter, unfortunately, while Baldur's Gate 2 (at the time) was paving new roads. And that's why all these throwback titles are only ever going to be so good.

Anyway. Pathfinder to me? 5.5 or 6.0 at best. Too buggy, too slow. I don't feel like spending 10 mins to walk from Point A to point B simply because my character is stuck in a tar pit for no reason other than to add playtime to the campaign length. At least PoE2 had a speed option in game.

We don't have to play it now right? The game won't disappear into the ether if we leave it until a few months after launch? Ok then, drama over and we know what to do. :)

I am enjoying it so far but I think the price-point helps that.   I really like the feel of it but will hold off playing it likely for 6 months.  I picked up Kingdom Come in that GoG 10 year bundle. . 36 CDN I think for that bundle.  I will play through that first. . although I don't see any replay value in that one.

I liked POE, and DOS alright.  I tried  the free week-end of Tyranny and even at the price it is I just can't get into it.  I did find I enjoyed the original Baldur's gate a lot one I got used to the interface and recalled some D&D rules from that period.  The new games were exciting but didn't keep me hooked.

Pathfinder had me hooked and I don't want that ruined by the current patching mess etc.
