wait, I don't know about the other games but Darkfall has NPC settlements and hubs players can use and there is some sort of PvE content in the form of rudimentary quests that NPCs give. Is New World similar?
Yeah but darkfall is a mmo in the sense we think of one, sadly it(in all illiterations) is plagued by lack of nonpvp content, new pvp content, huge grinds, pve group activities(although the 2 reboot versions added a little), diversity in playstyles(new dawn adds a bit of depth but no where near anything substantial) non pvp content, content, content.....content.
RIP New dawn and not long from now ROA. Heres is to hoping crowfall and/or camelot unchained are truly spectacular.
I read a tonne of sci fi and I am so sick of seeing so many post apocalyptic books littering the genre. A few original mostly rubbish. This survival genre is the same.
So one guys comments on a new game are all we need to decided what sort of game it will be? These days with launches being so pre-emptive an NDA equals Not Done Alpha.

I was going by the other posters here who appear to have played the alpha and feel it is more survival title than anything else.
Which for some reason they seem to always launch in the state of "NDA" you have described.

Thank god MMORPGs are dead. I really can't stand the kind of MMORPG most people understand nowadays as MMORPG.
But as far as i have read that stuff i fear it is to much MMORPG for me. XP sounds like grinding. And i can't stand Real Painful Grinding aka RPG (TM)
But stats affecting the character is a different story. Scum, another survival game in alpha, does a lot right with Str, Con, Dex, Int and Age affecting the appearance and some skills. Just a pity it isn't Massive Multiplayer, because i do like virtual worlds with 500+ players.
The Survival Genre could be one of the better blueprints for virtual worlds.. but they all still miss a lot of advanced features, like territory control, like serious goods transportation (with actual goods representation in weight and size in the world), building/transforming and so on and so forth..
I might have a look at New World when it releases. But for now the little information is not worth much.
Of course this is an MMORPG. It's a massive world, loads of players and character progression. The new MMO-community, where sandbox MMO's aren't even considered MMO's any longer, and vanilla WoW is considered hardcore, blows.
I can see the game being both survival and territorial conquest. They aren't mutually exclusive. Traditional survival games even have a territorial component even if it is rather crude.
Also, if it has 500+ player concurrency in a zone then it's an MMO period. Setting a bar for "what is an MMO" works both ways. If it hits the numbers, it qualifies regardless of its other qualities.
Sure, definitely a MMO, but perhaps not necessarily a MMORPG as there are some additional qualifiers, particularly in terms of avatar persistence and progression.
For example, will NW be wiping servers regularly post launch? Even Crowfall treads a thin line on this point
Seems you can make a case because characters are able to migrate and take much of their progress with them, but again, we will have to see.
Same for NW, won't know for sure until more is revealed.

I'm commenting on another person live stream of game play that I can access any time.
As a betting man I don't see Amazon improving the things I outlined because it's seems unimportant for what the game is really about.
It's a more polished version of Rust. The only thing RPG about it is levels and stats.
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
I read a google translation of the whole article and I'm still seeing survival game much more than MMORPG. They may make it the biggest concurrent-players-in-one server survival game ever but the emphasis on gathering, building, eating and drinking water and PvP screams survival game.
It could be the first MMSG and I wish them luck but I'm skeptical. There seems to be what I consider to be a misguided notion going around these days that the popularity of games that are all about PvP like the MOBAs, shooters and Battle Royale games means that those huge quantities of players are ready to be attracted to the kind of game that demands long hours and commitment in developing your character so PvP sandboxes seems to be all the rage in MMOish game development these days.
I think they're missing the point: those games are hugely popular precisely because they don't demand long hours and commitment and you can jump in and start having fun without needing to do any of the work that MMORPGs or MMSGs require.
It's 2 very different audiences that are attracted by the two types of games and any crossover of players between the two is purely coincidental.

We didn't call Darkfall or other sandbox games "survival games", did we?
No, we did not.
Think on that for a moment, and also know that this game likely will not release before 2020. They got plenty of time to work on things and I doubt funding is an issue. If anything does end up flopping, it'll be their game designers dropping the ball.

Did DF require a player to regularly forage for food and water, and failing to find such they would begin to weaken and die?
No? One big difference then. Just because both games might have a player punching bushes doesnt mean they are in the same genre.

Stop talking nonsense. You clearly aren't playing the alpha if this is what you think food and water do in New World, and I will leave it at that.

Nope, not playing alpha and as most honor the NDA I have no idea how much of anything works in NW.

I know right?? People are too concerned with what to call games now, especially when talking about unfinished Alpha builds. "It's a **" "No it's not, it's a **"... jeez... None of these labels have concrete definitions that everybody agrees on.
Massively? Vague and undefined.
Multiplayer? Seems straightforward but STILL people can't even agree what it means.
Online? I THINK everyone agrees on that one...
Role-playing? Pigs will fly before that one gets a concrete definition.
Game. Well at least everyone can agree they're talking about games.
Survival. Just like Role-playing, ask 100 people what a Survival game is and you'll get 128 answers.
The day that a checklist exists where you can classify every aspect of a game the universe will implode.

Sure, if you want to do mental gymnastics. For most rational people its easy to categorize this and other games.
Anyone wanna bet me 4 grand New World will be referred to by and large as a survival game when it releases? I could use a new PC I don't have to build.....

According to the videos I've seen, there are badly working hunger and thirst mechanics.
It's a survival game, as there isn't really sh!# else to do. I REALLY do not see them doing much else but would be delighted if they do.
I also believe folks are giving Amazon WAY too much credit as they announced 3 games back in 2016 and one has already been canned. What Amazon CAN afford to do is scrap this project and not flinch as it's basically a demo for Lumberyards capabilities.
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
It's an MMORPG, I can point to the elements of the game in old MMOs across the board. If you can't then you don't know what a sandbox MMO is. Executive producer is a UO dev, worked on UO2 as well. If you didn't play 97-01 UO after that probably Shadowbane then you won't see the blatantly obvious elements that are the same. I happened to like both games and played both from release.

Sure I do, never played UO but I have about 10 years in EVE, which I and most other clearly consider to be a sandbox style MMORPG.
How many elements does NW share with it?
80, 90 %? Maybe you are correct, we'll see when more can be revealed.
But if I have to eat or drink just to survive in the game world, even while standing still doing nothing, its survival game regardless whatever features it incorporates from the MMORPG genre.

Amazon are building games that will increase their Twitch audiences.
Watching people picking berries and chopping wood is not very exciting, but then again, it's still early days for New Dawn. The locations for the conquerable player settlements are already there. Once the basics are in place, development on the more "visually entertaining" aspects will probably start.
And seeing as survival mechanics are part of the game, a fortress siege can literally starve the defenders to death...
