Good grief, did this game get derailed. I've been constantly stating that crowdfunding was a terrible platform by design for MMORPGs but I wasn't expecting it to get to the point where the promised MMORPG ended up mutating into a battle royale.
(yea, I know the real game is supposedly still in the works but more and more it's looking like this will be what people will end up getting)
The lure of easy BR money has a very strong appeal.
I recall Mark Jacobs admitting earlier this year to wanting to join the fray, but decided against devoting any resources until they delivered on their promises for CU.
Previously he mentioned turning away queries about licensing their new game engine for similar reasons.
I've been a harsh critic of CU this year over the delays and lack of a solid delivery schedule, but so far I have to respect him for sticking to the original vision, at least more than most others.

Where's that Jhalon guy now? Just waiting for the positive spin
BR used for PvP testing was much more than just testing for fun as I always suspected. They're jumping into the trendy money making game mode with both feet it seems.

Crowed funded games produce terrible results. They almost never meet deadlines and rarely deliver what they promise. In the end it becomes a cash grab system.
Landmark anyone? Backed it..They pulled the same SH__ ..change of name change of game and a pre release of something totally different. This is a move to make sure they're not sued when they don't pay back kick starter pledges as promised if a playable game was never released. I am too old and played too many games not to see this for exactly what it is.

Difference is SOE never sold pre orders for EQ Next. When they started taking money, it was always just for Landmark.
My thoughts...assumptions.
First of all,we will NEVER hear the truth from any developer on their real intentions,so we are left to always do the guess work.
I will start with a question....If you were making a mmorpg, would you look to test the pvp combat FIRST?Not me,i wouldn't even have pvp and it would be one the LAST things i am testing.
So what do i think?IMO they are simply testing the waters to see how popular this Battle Royale idea will be.If popular enough, this is what it will become full time, very similar to Fortnite. If it doesn't turn out to be very popular, then they will move to marketing strat #2,TBA after they work out some new details/strategies.
Big picture? They do not have any confidence they can turn a decent profit from the MMORPG game, they are looking to join in to the most lucrative market right now and that is the BR genre.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I thought they had said they were only doing a BR mode specifically to test the current combat and servers? I doubt it did amazingly, but somehow they still are justifying releasing it as a BR standalone for the time being? That's a really bad idea.
Based on the stream, the said having phase 1, 2, etc was causing confusion. So that naming convention was going to stay for the persistent MMO, and the BR, Siege and Horde tests would be called Apocalypse. They would also open that up to everyone because they wanted more feedback and more people to test and break it. It isn't a standalone game, nor is this removing features from the game.
Not exactly sure where Suzie got "The castle siege, horde and battle royale modes will be moving off to become separate from Ashes of Creation the MMO" from. They aren't removing those modes from the MMO, but putting them in a different section of the test. Once they hit the point in alpha to incorporate it all again, it sounds like Apocalypse will fade away.
I certainly hope you are right... I backed this project for a P2P MMO with a dynamic world, not some sh**ty F2P BR cash grab.
Don't worry folks, I'm sure none of the Kickstarter funds were used in the creation of the BR mode, clearly it was drawn from the $30M in funding Steven had lined up before ever getting started.

Wasn't Landmark essentially used to help develop EQ Next? Since the buildings and stuff created were originally going to be put in game or sold in the in-game store and players could get a %.

yes, and the "new vision" changed weekly however the Landmark name was added and EQ was taken out so as not to be affiliated with the branding. We got quite tired of smiling cult leaders telling us how great everything was going to be as bits and pieces of the original concept kept chipping away. At the end we had learned that our creations weren't going to be sold and in order to build them they would be tied to a mining time sink. Much like this. We waited for ages for water and by the time water was introduced the population and reduced to a trickle.
I know this will give them data but it worries me that they are doing this to see how it sticks as a standalone game. If it is popular I can easily see the MMO going to the back burner and possibly never releasing.
Wanna alay your fears there, this articles name is a HUGE bout of misinformation to say the least. The battle royal was just a test of the action combat mechanics and they said that with the popularity of the this mode they were THINKING of adding it on the side (like queuing for this as like a pvp mode in game) and that going forward their next stage is testing more of the actual mmorpg mechanics aside from the combat mechanics. Per usual MMORPG.com throws out the title and information it thinks will garner the most views instead of sharing facts or important information that the audience actually wants to know about.
I'm sure one of the defenders will pop in to assure us that this is great news and we just don't follow the game closely enough to appreciate how awesome it is.
Looks at prior post and one above.
Yup.

"some" comments do demonstrate gullibility. I'll let everyone determine which ones those are...

Watch the video and judge for yourself the information and its validity. I see a lot of misinformation on all sides of the arguments but most of it is via second hand information and with no actual thoughts or research put into any of it. Truly disappointed at the writer of this article for their part in the misinformation and would hope that they fix this issue with some true journalistic integrity.

Speaking of dumb "easily gullible" is not a thing.

I'm not about to watch an hour and 30 minutes of that. Care to point us with time stamps to the part where he says they are not releasing Apocalypse as a F2P BR mode in December?

"just for testing" lol. just like SC made the first ship for testing. lol

I was told by a relative who is a software dev in the gaming industry to be skeptical of anything being said about a game in development until proven otherwise. I was told this many years ago and I can't count the number of times that has saved me from making bad purchasing decisions when it comes to games.
I think that advice is more prudent in this day and age than it's ever been.

so apparently you completely missed the PvE video in that stream?
here is a lazy auto text transcript of the stream https://pastebin.com/raw/vmg1tDtM
*will have silly errors*
the devs really need to provide such updates in text form as well but often don't...
