Bait and switch is a form of fraud, and is very much illegal. Part of what makes it illegal is intent, and there are three examples of this that Bethesda has shown already.
1) Allegedly sending out legitimate canvas bags out to reviewers. These reviewers review the product they are given, and thus sending a superior product to one to people that review it for the populous and then sending the customers something entirely different is ILLEGAL. It also makes reviewers complacent and potential partners in illicit activity if they do not make a correction to their review; at the very least it is also a matter of ethics if such is not done.
1.5 Bonus) With regards to the food industry and in particular fast food (even though this is a different industry and entirely different situation -- but just for your information), they get away with this by saying it's "fast food" in the name, and if anyone specifically asks for an exact copy of the burger in the advertisement for the price advertised, they will and have to comply if they want to be in somewhat unethical compliance with the law (the fact we're used to them ripping us off doesn't make it better and is exactly why other cases where this happens must be safeguarded). Though Bethesda originally said they had no intent on doing this (sourced later) and then started to give "shut them up" atoms as a sneaky settlement so that so have no legal grounds to partake in a suit.
2) Advertising the canvas bag, as they did, in a picture of the collectors edition. What's that you say? They put in "may not be representative of the final product" in small letters below sometime AFTER the main advertisement campaign (the more recent version that I've seen)? This combined with the first above makes the INTENT TO DECEIVE very clear (and it's even worse since the original advertisement had no such thing -- a violation in of itself and already enough to prove Intent). It could be argued they knew from the start it would be different; what's more, they further allegedly dug their own hole the moment they sent others the bag that was shown in the advertisement.
Notice that in the video advertisement (that most would see due to where it was presented) no fine print is present. This was what people at E3 saw -- one of the largest events. The youtube video itself has 1.5 million views.
3) Them saying that it would be too expensive to make the advertised bag for people who spent $200 on their product. There have already been estimates that the materials for the canvas bag would have been approximately $5 (irrelevant but interesting information; it also presumed to be why 500 atoms is offered, which equals roughly $5) if bought in bulk. They then came out and said the representative that made that statement was a seasonal or outsourced worker and no longer worked for them / represented them.

There is no defense for this. You are fine to remain ignorant to the ways of the world and put your fingers in your ears. But do not condemn nor mock the law or those who find this behavior to be acceptable. In my opinion and if applying this to any other similar situation, this is the behavior of someone with no real world experience and something I would expect out of some one who is quite young / without a yearning to educate themselves.
And since you're so keen on crying wolf or claiming people are being mean to you, that isn't happening here either. The key items being "In my opinion" that this is the behavior of someone (namely, I didn't mention you, but in general -- and I still vehemently stand by that general stance) that quantifies the before-mentioned qualities.

Did you think for a moment that almost everyone is against you in this thread / "WTF'd" you is because maybe... just maaaaaaybe you don't know what's going on right now? I mean, you mentioned a nylon bag being worth $20 when even the canvas probably wouldn't have been more than $5 to make... and if that number isn't enough because numbers are made up on the internet -- then the fact Bethesday valued it at $5 with 500 atoms.

With regards to essentially saying the video is useless -- in his original video covering the lawsuit (Also referenced in point 3) for deceptive practices that Bethesda is having, it informed quite a few people on what was going on. As a result, the Law firm acquired more key witnesses to such alleged shitty practices as promising a refund in a mail, sending a new mail saying it isn't possible since they downloaded it (it's a digital only game -- even the box has a digital code... which is a catch 22 if you know what that is)... and then the same individual seeing that his play button doesn't work and his install option gone when he tried to reinstall. Apparently they went through with taking back the game they said they couldn't take back, but didn't give his money back. Now the lawyers have testimonies of this from people -- and that one person in particular knew of it because of the video that they saw.
What "in no way helps the consumer" is brushing off instances that break consumer trusts and violates laws specifically made to protect consumers.

If it was just the problem with the CE and the game was fine and well received, there wouldn't be nearly the stink about it, but with the state of the game, how Bethesda has handled that, and now this happens, I can see how this caught traction so fast.
Bethesda should make good on the canvas bag that was advertised or refund the entire purchase to those that want it. If I ordered a Dewalt circular saw and was sent a Black and Decker instead, am I supposed to keep my mouth shut and be happy with what I got instead of what I paid for? No way in hell. They would either need to send me the right one or refund my money. Most companies would probably say sorry for the mistake and send me the right one once I sent back the Black and Decker. I doubt they would say, too bad, but here is a voucher for $5 you can use on your next purchase.

The thing is, they don't want to refund the bag, they instead give you 500 units of Virtual Currency. Not only is it a piece of nothing(virtual currency lol - what's its worth once 76 goes offline?), it's also both not worth that amount in virtual currency(afaik 750 atoms) nor in its real world value(at least 10$ aka 1000 atoms). You have to agree it's a very shady thing. They fully deserve what's coming to them.

I'm not sure you understand the overall picture here. This has less to do with Bethesda, gamers, or your seeming love/hate of either. Replace gamer with stereo purchaser and Bethesda with company that sold a component stereo set. If the company clearly put a component piece on the set advertisement... used to sell the set... then shipped the set with a much cheaper piece... people would be understandably upset. It's an inferior overall product than they paid for.
This is called false advertising. Bethesda should have communicated with customers the moment they realized their bean counters messed up on the cost analysis (they did this far in advance btw) and been more generous than 5.00. They potentially could have gained POSITIVE media attention, rather than looking cheap and shady like they do now.

One of the first things I learned as an adult was that if you are tough enough to throw a punch, you should be tough enough to take one as well. It was a lesson well learned and applies to a lot of situations in the real world.
One of the next things I learned as an adult is that swearing and name calling is a sign of weakness, indicating someone doesn´t have any proper arguments so resorts to this.
You push, I won´t push back. I do however encourage you to learn the above lessons as well, the reactions you are getting are simply a mirror being held up to you, you reap what you sow.

I'd really hate for people who think the whole ordeal is funny to not know about locale and state laws when traveling and to have to spend weeks, months or even years behind bars because they think everything is a joke. They had to prove they weren't illegal immigrants.
This is doubly so if you work for a company or have a position of management that requires you to uphold the law so that they don't get in trouble with weights and measures. My father worked with Weights and Measures for a while and there are violations a plenty -- most from human error without intent. There are also very stupid laws in agriculture due to politics. Such as an entire package being denied entry or exit if it has more than two leaves in it. For no reason other than to piss each other off and in response to something else they don't like. But still the law and still upheld to the letter of the law.
The law is no laughing matter and while there are many good hearted officers of the law, there are some that just have bad days. The law is, for the most part, also there to protect consumers and big corporations only get away with things when nobody notices or cares to notice. Though it's also a double edged sword as people apply that to private citizens without proof or evidence, such as when the young woman lost her job at Chipotle when an alleged scam artist set it up so that a mob would go after her. It turns out he and his friends had years of theft / dine and dash / records and bragged about them on social media. This could lead to potential Defamation, Liable, Fraud, Likely hundreds of misdemeanor thefts which could escalate into a felony if the total dollar amount exceeds a specific amount. And it was an angry mob that made Chipotle fire her and then try and rehire her when people found out it was a scam and or joke they laughed about at the expense of a young woman.

There's no reason to worry, I only have book knowledge of them and worked with lawyers regarding this -- I have no proper education beyond it so you can definitely state precedence and contradicting laws that I don't know about.
This isn't an open and shut situation; I welcome such contradictions.

Listen, it's one thing to have an opinion. I, for one, have an opinion (most times) that no one agrees with. You and they don't have to like opinions but that's what makes forums interesting.
However, burying your head in the dirt and saying it's ok when there is actual theft going on... that's a WHOLE different story. This is bait and switch which is akin to Theft. This thread hasn't even focused on the other shenanigans that Bethesda/Fallout76 was involved in. Those shenanigans combined with THESE shenanigans combine for some seriously bad optics.

1) Allegedly sending out legitimate canvas bags out to reviewers. These reviewers review the product they are given, and thus sending a superior product to one to people that review it for the populous and then sending the customers something entirely different is ILLEGAL. It also makes reviewers complacent and potential partners in illicit activity if they do not make a correction to their review; at the very least it is also a matter of ethics if such is not done.
2) Advertising the canvas bag, as they did, in a picture of the collectors edition. What's that you say? They put in "may not be representative of the final product" in small letters below sometime AFTER the main advertisement campaign (the more recent version that I've seen)? This combined with the first above makes the INTENT TO DECEIVE very clear (and it's even worse since the original advertisement had no such thing -- a violation in of itself and already enough to prove Intent). It could be argued they knew from the start it would be different; what's more, they further allegedly dug their own hole the moment they sent others the bag that was shown in the advertisement.

Notice that in the video advertisement (that most would see due to where it was presented) no fine print is present. This was what people at E3 saw -- one of the largest events. The youtube video itself has 1.5 million views.
3) Them saying that it would be too expensive to make the advertised bag for people who spent $200 on their product. There have already been estimates that the materials for the canvas bag would have been approximately $5 (irrelevant but interesting information; it also presumed to be why 500 atoms is offered, which equals roughly $5) if bought in bulk. They then came out and said the representative that made that statement was a seasonal or outsourced worker and no longer worked for them / represented them.
There is no defense for this. You are fine to remain ignorant to the ways of the world and put your fingers in your ears. But do not condemn nor mock the law or those who find this behavior to be acceptable. In my opinion and if applying this to any other similar situation, this is the behavior of someone with no real world experience and something I would expect out of some one who is quite young / without a yearning to educate themselves.
And since you're so keen on crying wolf or claiming people are being mean to you, that isn't happening here either. The key items being "In my opinion" that this is the behavior of someone (namely, I didn't mention you, but in general -- and I still vehemently stand by that general stance) that quantifies the before-mentioned qualities.

With regards to essentially saying the video is useless -- in his original video covering the lawsuit (Also referenced in point 3) for deceptive practices that Bethesda is having, it informed quite a few people on what was going on. As a result, the Law firm acquired more key witnesses to such alleged shitty practices as promising a refund in a mail, sending a new mail saying it isn't possible since they downloaded it (it's a digital only game -- even the box has a digital code... which is a catch 22 if you know what that is)... and then the same individual seeing that his play button doesn't work and his install option gone when he tried to reinstall. Apparently they went through with taking back the game they said they couldn't take back, but didn't give his money back. Now the lawyers have testimonies of this from people -- and that one person in particular knew of it because of the video that they saw.
What "in no way helps the consumer" is brushing off instances that break consumer trusts and violates laws specifically made to protect consumers.
I believe you don't understand the value of money, moreover you don't understand companies responsibility and accountability towards their customers.

I'm not here to fit in into what I believe to be a major issue in gaming today. Sites like this allow a few old, angry, bitter wash ups to cry, doom and gloom all day every day. You guys are washed up, the industry has left you behind and you cant handle it. I'm here because I think you guys do more damage then any developer could dream of.
