Unfortunately I suspect many "older" gamers have walked away from MMORPGS as I have.
Many are playing single player games, knitting, throwing horseshoes etc. while waiting for some old school indie MMORPG to launch like Pantheon, Camelot Unchained, Ashes or a few others.
Of course for some of us it's a question of whether this will ever happen before we either get too old to play or.....
Or what? You get your smiley's mouth zipped? You go to the moon? You change the hobby?

Gw2 prime time in wvw, you will meet an amazing group of older gamers, even to boss fight and run events. Lots of ladies play it as well just get on the servers TeamSpeak.
Ok.. well old or young, you gotta wonder what you want.. maybe what IP you are looking for, or style of play.
Personally, some really fun games.
Trove: You know what.. It's fun, it's full of 80's nostalgia retro jokes, and the Voxel graphics feel like 8 bit 3d game.
Dungeons and Dragons Online: It has the "Old School DnD" feel about it. (3.5 edition rules.. sorta.. they kinda went a bit more generic MMO with their expansions) it's an older game, and the graphics show it's age badly.
Eternal Crusade: Ok this is an MOBA, but, as an older player, I am more into Melee then Ranged, and this game levels that playing field pretty good. (Warhammer 40K IP tho). But keep in mind, it feels like a B grade MOBA.
GW2 is not a bad game, but it is also a lot of button mashing, which is hard on my old fingers.
BDO: Best Combat I have ever had in any MMO, but the UI drove me insane, still a fun game.
Hope this helps you out.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
EQ2 is literally your only option (anyone feel free to name any others) that's the kind of community you're looking for. Unfortanately the games been slowly dieing over the years. It is still alive if somewhat quieter than what it used to be.
Maybe Project Gorgon but haven't played lately so can't verify what the community is like these days.
I would wait for Classic WOW and try to find a guild like the one I will be creating. Right now the rest of the games are dead outside of high end guilds because the games today are just Single player games not MMORPGS..

This is very true in my circle too. A lot of the game being suggested here is not what older ex MMO players like at all. Your getting replies probably from younger people.
Been playing neverwinter and elite dangerous as of late. I often thought of going back to lotro or eq2 but feel that I will be playing catch up and when I do it will be over. I am 34 take it as you will but mmos have lost me a little, I am finding ham radio more interesting lol.
Also there is a way to backdoor this question. Go to the website for a guild called The Old Timers Guild (or one like them), see what games they are playing, go play one of those games, and then maybe apply to their guild so as to hang out with like minded folks.

Eternal Crusade is a lobby shooter. It is nowhere near a MOBA.
@ OP If you are not wrapped around social interaction, I recommend No Mans Sky. Lots to do in that game, and it is massive. You may never see another player, but they are out there.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
