The certain age group that likes this game have a certain type of taste. Fill in the specifics at your leisure.

Really? I'd like to know what MMOs you play, because I'm an old fart and think everything nowadays is crap. People (myself included) are excited for a version of WoW that's 14 years old and hands down better than today's. That tells a lot.

And the other 2 big mmos (FFXIV and ESO) are just present day WoW with different flavors.

As the mmorpg genre gets closer to death (even this website had to adapt and cover other genres), or worse, go full mobile, I simply don't understand when people say they prefer how it is now.

I'm pretty sure the only thing you can say for certain about gamers of a certain age is that they were all born within a few years of each other :p

I'm probably in that range you are thinking about, but I think old MMORPGs are trash and never liked Diablo.

This game is nothing like UO, it is a shallow copy, and it will fail just like Albion with a tiny playerbase. I really REALLY want to see some game to succeed UO, MMO's are dying and Fortnite's are taking over :(

Well I'm of that certain age and I gave UO a hard pass. By the time it came out I was all Lord Britished and Iolod out. Loved the SP Ultimas - even the bad ones but I wanted something new with real 3D graphics.

For me it was either Everquest or Asheron's Call and I chose AC as my first MMO.

@WargfootYV You are right, the pk is already fullon. Got killed 2 times on my miner and once on my adventurer today and another attempt where I got away. This is lining up to be a gankbox.

Full loot will lead to exactly what it did in UO: everyone just used GM crafted gear for PvP as: 1. getting dungeon gear is RNG and comes lots of time and PKing, 2. losing said dungeon gear is too costly. Eventually PK's get skilled, organized, and rampant and all the PvE'ers and casual PvP'ers leave.
LoA needs limited item insurance at a non-inconsequential cost (uses gold, can only be used on a certain amount of items), and the game would be a lot better. I stopped playing when I was PK'ed in a dungeon and lost everything and realized... UO created item insurance for a reason so that people would play and risk some, but not ALL of their time and resources.

Your comments about SOTA are spot on. I gave a lot to them and they are really trying recently. However, they are swaying in too many different directions.

Combat needs to be reworked aesthetically. Swinging weapons at air with very few sound effects or any weight to doing anything severely impacts the game for me. If i feel like my character is swinging a sword at something, there should be feedback of the swing on hit. SOTA has zero of that. You preform dances in front of your foes with very little sound effects or impact indications. Maybe I am asking for too much here.. but at least in WoW... a much older game.. You would know when your staff knocked onto a boar as you swung because it was a big CLUNK and squeel and your staff ricocheted... Maybe im just in my dream world again...

I love what they are trying to do with the game. Unfortunately, they made a lot of mistakes for general liking of the game and invested too much time into pleasing select few.

Excuse my sota rant... nothing here to see.

    Great read ty

    Still play eq and eve.

They are not the same as they were at launch tho and i am happy about that.

90% of what they added helps without ruining the oldschool feel.

I hope that "respect to the old but with new stuff tonright old wrongs" happens with both pantheon and Aria.

It's 2018, people don't wanna lose every single piece of gear they worked for. And the older folks who wanna relive the UO experience won't play enough to have an effect on the player base, so it's guaranteed to be a dead game before release.

Right. So you will get the old mechanics that were replaced for a reason and you will get the 2018 communities that are nothing like those from 1999.

Sounds like the worst of both worlds to me.

I want pre-flip phones. I want a phone and an answering machine, so when I get back I can check my messages and decide to call or not. I don't want to be expected to be on-call 24-7.  I'm totally working toward that but my wife likes to text chat a lot when she's not around...

I'm also toying with the idea of starting to write pen and paper letters to people I care about (while the option is still available) rather than engage in texting and shallow emails. Probably will live more like a hermit because of it though.

There's no real difference between those that were hooked on only UO, EQ, DaoC, SWG and WoW, their preferences were shaped by one specific game and they simply can't let go of that experience.

Its almost impossible to relive your gaming past and its better to try something different instead of chasing the dragon.

Well, there is some good mmos like ffxiv, and some bad like wildstar. We will always love our babys like WOW even though they din't age well. And the guys that was playing a mmo before the internet was invented will also love their babys even though they grew up and died. Or is on respirarors. And as such mmos are in my opinion not in a great place but that goes for most of the industry atm, cause of greed and to much focus on graphics. Lets hope the future holds something we can all fall in love with again :)

How old do you think people who played games before the internet really are?

Dont forget the PVPers who thought they would PVP by running into their house and hiding then coming out and attacking you. There were so many of these guys it was unreal. Now there was some really good PVPers in UO. A good friend of mine and his real life friend were 2. they would just fight reds and all day long. They also would kill the alts of these reds.

Hell yea, the good ol' days. I was in DDJ on Catskills and we would dress in our "peasant" gear starter clothes and hang out on the roads near Britannia where reds would gank people. We would have deadly poisoned katanas, which would take you down pretty fast, especially if you were not expecting it.

Was lol-fun to kill those guys thinking they were getting an easy gank in.

The real thing they want though (those that say it at least) is for that to apply across the board because it creates an environment where people force themselves to work with others to get things done.

No. I'm really against forcing people to do anything they don't naturally want to do. Fun isn't what somebody else decides you need to do. Fun is what engages you. Forcing people to group doesn't make grouping fun, it just makes people who don't want to group cross. And that goes around, making everyone cross. So "the real thing they want" is for developers and other gamers to stop making judgments about people who don't fit the norm.

    So, no thank you.

To a point I agree with you. Thought I do say not every game should be for everyone. Thats why there should be a game like Pantheon that forces group. I agree LOA should do its open world PVP Full Looting systems, BUT I do think it is going to fail as a game outside of the 2000 players that might play this game. People need to stop thinking every game needs to be made for them with that said developers should try to go for a more sustainable player base. That is what Pantheon is doing there is enough people out there that want that style of MMORPG and YES that means forced grouping. LOA problem is that they think if they tell people to go back to WOW carebear that they will still have their game and it will be fun. Yet when you have 2000 people play a game a few hours a month these players will be bored because no one will want to play because its forced OW PVP that can result in you loses uncountable hours of time. Now if they learned from UO and did a Fel and Tram they could have a larger player base but still most players will not risk large amounts of stuff to PVP.

I think the right balance between forcing and making a game for players of a certain market would be games like SWG and WOW. They were very well balanced games. YES you had to group up to do a lot of stuff, BUT you are playing an MMORPG and the point of MMORPGS are to play with other people. If you want a 100% single player game then you should play a single player game not an MMORPG that just is a fully single player game. This again is marketing to the correct audience. When I play a single player game I play to play alone all the time. When I play an MMORPG I play to play with other people a large portion of the time. This is why Classic WOW and SWG are my kind of games. Yes there were times in both games I played Solo. I crafted solo but I also worked with other players for resources. In WOW there were days I just wanted to quest for an hour or two by myself. But there were also days I wanted to run dungeons.
