PvE players like myself will stay away from this game so why even include safe zones. MIght as well appeal to your PvP audience and do away with them completely.

Totally agree. PvP-centric games crash fast.

After reading this mini interview I only have 2 problems with New World so far.

    1) PvP focused. Nothing to say here, it's just not for me.

    2) They said they are making the game based on player feedback? I thought they had a vision.

The second one is my biggest concern. When they say the game is shaped by player feedback they show either they never had a vision of what game they wanted to make, or they just want to cater to everyone.

I miss the days when developers decided what type of games they wanted to make and the audience interested in it would support it. Now it's all about pleasing the whole world in case half the world doesn't want it there's the other half to back it up.

    We will see at launch.

Yeah, their vision is or isn't confirmed with player feedback. If they tried to "please everyone" they'd announce pve servers. I can say this... it's the most beautiful game I've ever seen.

And I laugh when ppl say "oooooh nooo, pvpee is not for meee" then they login to Fortnite, LOL or BFV.

The setting sounds interesting. Wish they'd talked more about the combat, since that's what is going to make or break it for me.

Yikes, another pvp centric like Darkfall.  Doomed to the same fate of course.  I'll give it 6 months to be nice.  Pass since I'm primarily a PvE player in fantasy type games.  I save my PvP for shooters.

Hope you can enjoy a game on life support then.

coming from a pvp oriented person (me) I have to agree here. I think Amazon just blew a golden opportunity. Shooters being excepted, PvP centric games just do not have longevity (with few exceptions) as the...lets say level of Douchebag far exceeds the level of curious people. So you end up with servers that have really unhealthy populations and then, eventually shut down.

Too bad, as they were describing the idea behind the game I was getting interested, but I do not see any meaningful reason to even try this game.

Just look at the responses here, most are like no pve? not for me, and the very few that indicate they would like a pvp game, are complete...well we all get it.

    Such a waste.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

There vision seems to be about the time period of the game.  That's what their answers above focused on the most, and the fact they want it to be open world PvP with maybe a few safe zones, forcing people to band together to create a player based factioned experience.   Most of the popular MMO's out there have this already in addition to large PvE only areas, which is why they are so popular, PvP/PvE when you want.  I don't see how offering less content is going to make a game popular.  Hopefully they have some aces up theirs sleeves they plan to spring on everyone in the future.

My suggestion,  make it like a Roanoke Colony mystery.  Put up some carvings and etched messages and found notes about the colony that use to live there and as you explore, you uncover the mystery of their disappearance and gain access to what they left behind.  Perhaps in an HP Lovecraft or pre-Secret World style.  An old world theme may not be enough to keep people interested in the game unless it's linked to a pretty big mystery, like Crysis when the game shifted to an out of this world experience.

Anyways, I wish them well and hope they become a big success.

The combat is so trash, if it's PVP, it failed already. I don't see them overhauling what they have.

There's levels in the game of which you level from chopping down trees and killing wild life, if it's PVP, it failed already. All it is people racing to rape the ecosystem barren because of "leveling" and the highest level guy smacking fire out of new and naked players.

It's a decent looking survival lumberyard tech demo full of new "testers" who don't know any better.

Yep, that rules me out too. There are so many other PvP games, I don't know why they thought they would be bringing something new to the table with yet another PvP game, but my wife and I have plenty of other PvE choices.

Yes please do post that list, maybe I missed something in the last 10 years that are a good PvP MMO.

I wont be playing as I have no interest in a PvP MMO. But I commend them for doing one or the other. Games that try to do both end up messing one side up. Wow had to balance all classes for PvP and that messed up PvE and so on...

Solid and Good point.. thank you for this insight.

I wager that because of this, the PvP should be surprisingly well done.

Well.. good interview, solid questions answered. So that is great to hear about a new title coming out, and I hope this does well.

Personally.. I don't think this will take off that well, mainly because of conflicting game direction, I mean, PvE/Crafting being a major part of a PvP game... that feels like a major flaw in the overall design.

But, I'm going to take a wait and see with this one.. it might turn out to be a really great game with a large following.

    Pull the curtain back down!
    This is horrible!
Take it back to the conceptual stage and create a proper MMORPG focussed on PvE and cooperation.

That is a very good point I hadn't considered. I'm 37 now and, frankly, just never managed to get into Twitch. Back in my day, we just piled on the couch in the living room and watched our boy play Final Fantasy or set up a lan party, so I tend to gloss over Twitch's importance these days.

That said, I think others are right when they say this game will, at the very least, experience a stunted growth from its PvP focus. True there are PvP niche players out there that will enjoy it, but this is Amazon, not a no-name indie studio with a "vision." I HIGHLY doubt that Amazon is interested in creating a niche game for their first foray into MMO gaming. This decision will backfire. Just look at other PvP focused games released the last few years.

But there is a chicken and egg problem here.
If the PvP is boring, because of a lack of players, or because of an emphasis on ganking, who will watch the Twitch feeds.

Sure balanced PvP MOBAS, BRs, etc attract a viewer base. But a MMORPG with unbalanced PvP? You think that there really is a continuing audience for that?

And remember there are PvE YouTube videos out there with tens of millions of views.

Ugh ... I'm sure another take on "pvp-focused mmo" would make it work. These developers are batshit crazy.

In a world where I can get my PvP fix in <<ANY>> FPS/MOBA/Battle royale(literally a metric fuckton of those), I don't think there's room for a pvp game that punishes you for dying and calling it content or risk/reward bullshit.

Not only are there hundreds of BR games nowadays, they all vary in mechanics so there's literally something for everyone.

In such a world, why would I download a likely 100Gb MMO and get shit on by people who nolife into the game and I have no chance of catching up to them regardless of how good I am?

This is one of the reason I stopped playing MMOs and moved into FPS. Because of the level playing field. As a result, I play 1-2 hours tops at night and am close to grandmaster tier in Overwatch, which is less than top 1% of players in a game with 60 million copies sold, or more. Feelsgoodman.

I loved Lineage 2 more than life itself back in teh day, but I was young and I was nolifing to get top gear and wreck all the n00bs. Then I moved on to Gw2, love the sPvP system, made it to legendary in there once but flatlined in high diamond eventually but then ANet stopped supporting the spvp and instead made bunch of questionable changes so good lord there's Overwatch nowadays.

Honestly, I don't know who this game caters to...

Are they trying to carve a new niche, like battle royale did? It doesn't seem like it. I'm sure Twitch will market the fuck out of it but it's not going to stick IMO.

MMOs are a dying breed, and the PvP ones do not survive.

Glad a company with some funding decided to make a pvp oriented game with some vision behind it. Darkfall was the last one to come out and thanks to the shady greek devs, it was a train wreck.

I must be missing the vision part.  It sounds like a standard survival game.  More copy/paste then vision.

This is not a survival game, it's an MMORPG with some survival game elements. It's the logical evolution of the sandbox mmo. It's what UO, AC (to a degree, on Darktide at least), DAoC (set factions vs player built factions in this instance), Shadowbane, and Darkfall set out to do. Some were successful, others were not.

There have been no well put together pvp mmo's made since DAoC. Shadowbane was fun, probably the most fun I have had in an MMO, however the engine was a dumpster fire. Darkfall tried to merge UO and Shadowbane, and unfortunately, due to the ineptitude of Aventurine, both of their ventures tanked.

There is a void in the market and Amazon is planning on finally trying to fill it with this game. No other studio or publisher wanted to take a chance, they are beholden to the shareholder. Luckily, Amazon sees this as an opportunity to promote Twitch and attract viewers so they are willing to invest.

The MMORPG genre has been in decline for at least 10 years. AAA studios are no longer interested because nobody but the top few already established games are making any kind of money. The top MMO's? PvE. If MMO's are going to survive as a genre they need games like this, even if they aren't for everyone. The same can be said for games like Landmark or EQN. Sadly, Columbus Nova wasn't willing to invest so the games died.

Logical evolution? How will this game evolve traditional sandbox gameplay?
It didn't, if anything its more of a 'limited' sandbox, which to be fair we are seeing more Themepark games with 'limited sandbox' elements too, there aren't really many games that can make a solid claim to being a true sandbox game and this isn't one of them. :/

You didn't ask them about the Porn Hub video leak Suzie, surely the studios reaction to that is what every fan wants to know about. :)
