My first MMO I ever played was Asheron's Call 1 back in 1999 so you know I'm OG as fuck...

After play that daily for probably 3+ years... I then moved on to Vanilla WoW.. I only ended up playing that for about 6 months... After that..... It was all over for my MMORPG gaming career....  I could never get into playing MMO's anymore... Nothing could ever hold my attention anymore.. It just feels annoying every time I try to play a MMORPG now..

I just installed Black Desert remastered and while it looks nice... I played for about 35 minutes then got annoyed and left...

Now literally the only game I play is DOTA2...

It doesn't sound like the social experience is why you started to play MMORPGs.

I also started with AC and played for about 3 years before moving on to DAoC, SWG and AO before Wow. AC can be played entirely solo. It was basically the opposite of EQ.

Perhaps you were only ever a video game players. Consoles? Early PC? Many early MMORPG players came from RPG and MUD backgrounds (I am an RPG player ... not a video gamer). They were a different breed who played for social reasons and that kept their interest.

Provide your gaming background and typical interests. Perhaps explore the possibility that you were never really the target demographic for MMORPGs. Other than that, everyone has different interests anyway so just don't play what you don't like.

Try single player RPGs. Dragons Quest 11 is pretty good.

    I here you
The modern MMO is just so gimmicky and the MMO player base today is just annoying 75% of the time to me.  If I can't solo an MMO I don't even bother with it. And the monetization from game companies is making it worse now. My first MMO was Anarchy Online back in 2000 with beta testing all the way to 2010. I really miss when MMO's were just computer geeks that played them. Now its mainstream and filled with morons.

The sad thing is that I do play MMORPG I don't like because they are free yet I am repulsed by the cash shops. I have to scratch the MMORPG itch.  Even worst is you can't even escape microtransactions in AAA full priced games anymore.

MMORPG are still peddling that 15 year old content and gameplay. Gameplay that is usually subpar to single player games and designed to make you spend money to not play the game.

For me, it's the longevity. If you're an MMO veteran, chances are you've seen games come and go. The more of my favourite games shut down, the less I want to invest into a new one.

It's a strange genre and with games as a service, this now blends into single player games as well. Yes, it's fun in the moment and that's what matters. But there is something magical about having a hobby, knowing you can enjoy it as little or as much as you want.

I would have the patience for MMOs. I don't have the patience of finding something I love and watching it die over a few years.

Black Desert has that effect at first. It is just loaded with stuff that annoys and confuses you during the first impression stage. Once you know what you're doing it gets a lot better.

It might be worth giving it another shot and being more patient with it. I dropped it as fast as anything as well the first time I played it too... and the second... but the third time, I got past the intro parts and understood the node system, life skill systems and started having a lot of fun with it.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Alot of us that started in the pre wow era seem to have similar problems finding a newer MMO we really like. I have tried GW2, FFXIV, ESO, and many others and they just get boring so fast.

The magic of MMORPGs is over.  We're going to need them to move to VR (and for that tech to become affordable, as MMORPGs need persistently wide reach to be successful), perhaps, before we can achieve anything comparable to what we experienced back in the day.  It's not possible on current form factors.  It's too formulaic - it doesn't matter how much they try to shove action combat or whatever into it.

I'm in a similar boat.  MMORPGs have almost no attractiveness to me at the moment.  The most popular upcoming MMORPGs here are literal copies of 10-20 year old games...  Not very enthusiastic to consider.

That's cause the genre itself has lost its luster.  The biggest change is the communities.  EQ wasn't a fun game.  The people playing it were fun to play and socialize with.  That distinction is important.

That's why even the people who played pre-WoW games have largely left them.  Once those people were gone, there was really not much reason to stick to the game.  The game wasn't the selling point.  The communities were.

With MMORPGs going mainstream, they bought in a ton of newer users, and this dilluted the niche of users that dominated them before.  This "changed the games" for the existing users, and made them a lot less attractive... and less fun.

Hey OP have you tried Project Gorgon made by two AC devs? and you can always try playing some of the older MMO's that are still around like EQ's and that new AO progression server.

Maybe why I can't seem to get into Gorgon (which is modeled on AC I am sure we can agree?).
There are a lot of stuff that I like in Gorgon and it is oldschool in a good way, but every time I see a streamer play to try to get in the mood and buy; it is always solo and kinda void of tactics .. farm stuff .. sell to vender, and I am missing that hunt for a quest item or special drop and the grouping and tactical combat part from eq.

I think mmorpg's are what you make of them. And some level of social contact seems to be needed or one has to at least enjoy having people around.

But true, one has to find some level of engagement in the world, some hook to bring you in.

I'm with the OP, I'm just not interested in the gameplay or social experiences MMORPGs offer, whether modern or classic

Even among the upcoming indies, only a couple are of interest,  Star Citizen and COE.

One I'll likely lack the coordination to play and the other is a big long shot of ever being completed.

I'll let you guess which is which.

Sounds like you haven't enjoyed an MMO since 2003, so I'm not sure why you've decided to post about that in 2019.

I've kind of enjoyed ESO, but I'm not playing that much of anything, so haven't really stuck to it.

If this trend continues, you may have to be content with flipping a coin to see if you win or not.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

What's funny about ESO is that I found myself just putting off logging in...Then you go another day, then another...Then soon you just say i don't really miss it at all, and take it off your desktop or steam library and move on.

I find FFXIV very enjoyable especially in Eureka which contains the kind of grind I love about mmorpg. I'm OG too and started playing pre wow as well, but I feel really down if I'm not playing a mmorpg I'm an addict and I love it.

There was no one there when I played it..  I literally did not see 1 other player anywhere and I was on a full server...

DAoC is where it died sadly. Or SWG. Agree / disagree.

I had become no patience too .
If the tutorial too long , i quit . If there are no tutorial , i quit too .
For example i find it hard to get in MOBA like LOL or DOTA2 after a year of not playing , those game need AI tutorial like DOTA1 AI , cause large among of info of items and heroes is need to play .

Compare to those game that require too much info to play , BR like PUBG or Fornite is easy to get in cause there are less info require to learn to play them

in case of MMORPG , the tutorial is too long , it take you few weeks or month to get in multiplayer part of the game . And another problem is MMORPG tutorial don't teach you anything about gameplay aside doing boring quests . So in a game with a lots mechanic aside combat , player become confused .

Basically MMORPG tutorial teach nothing and did nothing to guide player into the game

I played Vanilla WoW and from there to Rift and then to GW2. I am tired now. Runescape was my first MMO. Now I am looking for something with a combo of the features I want. But doesnt seem like it will ever happen unless I luck up on 100 million dollars and make it myself.

No character levels, faction pvp only,  and sandpark with housing and voxel building, and real time travel vehicles like ships and magic portals, combo of Gw2 class system/elite spec skill system with Vanilla Rift's talent tree system
