Unconfirmed rumors are swirling that Electronic Arts paid Tyler "Ninja" Blevins a million dollars to stream Apex Legends and tweet about it to his thirteen million followers within the first 24-hours after the game was announced. Other "influencers" were also paid to stream Apex Legends, including Michael "Shroud" Grzesiek, though the details of his deal with EA remain unknown. The standard caveat in this is that neither EA nor Blevins have commented on the rumors.

I tend to agree. I mean, it's not shocking, though perhaps the amount is, but the "story" has gained traction with people at least pretending to be shocked. :D

On one hand, this is no different from paid sponsorship or advertisement, if it is properly disclosed.

On the other hand, this is also akin to being an EA Gamechanger, and is an inherent hit to his perceived credibility.

C'mon, even I've heard of him and I'm about as clueless as one can be about game celebrities and streaming.

I agree.  I see nothing wrong with it, so long as Ninja is okay with sending the message that his gaming choices are not made solely on the basis of how fun he finds any given game.

If this is true and he didn't state this then it would be issue. It is like when we get sponsored articles on this site, there is no issue as long as it is stated that it is sponsored.

By LAW they are required to state if a stream/video/twit whatever is sponsored or not, because sponsored often times means that's not really their opinion/recommendation and it's misleading.

The reason this is so big because if it's true they are breaking major laws and honestly there might be some really massive consequences considering the amounts of money they've been paid according to these rumors.

So no it's not shocking that a celeb is promoting something for money, however they are breaking big laws and that's the actual news here.

they do it with every game. Most do a single 'sponsored' stream and then hope people dont figure out theyre under 'contract' top stream it x amount more days.

I think every streamer got paid to stream Atlas for at least a week.

A few also got paid to stream Star Citizen there awhile ago as well.

When guys completely break their 'format' and you see them streaming a game completely out of their element its safe to assume theyre getting paid. I am pretty sure CohhCarnage got paid to play it as well as he never plays shooters (edit semantics for single player RP games like Fall Out being called a shooter) of any kind let alone BR games. yet he stream Apex for a few sessions.

But Twitch has that 'amazon' money now so does it really matter? When New World releases or gets in a state that its steamable we will really see something.

But its a world of no competition now. All these 'platforms' all have a massive share of the total market. And each 'separate' controlling interest is controlled or owned by another even bigger entity.

In any event if anyone thinks these streamers, regardless of what they say or how they act, that get sponsored or play games for pay are the new circus barkers who use their popularity and influence to make money. All the while pretending to care about their followers and subscribers. Its a business to them and its as shady as it gets. Anyone that kids themselves into thinking because a streamers recognizes their (MADE UP NAME) handle in their stream and gives them a 'shout out' is exactly the type of sap they want watching because 99% of the time that shout out is due to a sub or a donation.
