it almost feels like that guy wanted some instant gratification or something by exposing the server. Now only a matter of time NC will close it down. All because of one dude trying to get internet fame.
Judas thought he was doing the right thing too, but things didn't go quite as he expected.
In all fairness, that amazing CoX community turned out to be an inclusive circle jerk, ridiculing those who mentioned them and removing those who didn’t fit in. I would be upset, but not at the guy outing them..
/Cheers, Lahnmir
Yeah... you're unfortunately right. People are jerks though, that part doesn't really surprise me.
What shocks me most is how long this server has been up with very little getting out about it. I guess on the other hand when you have mods who can censor anything said about it in those small communities/forums it's a bit less of a feat. But still, quite impressive. Makes me wonder what else is out there..
Meh, other than the super secret Vanguard server not much.
...... WHOOPS!!!!
Wish the super secret Vanguard server worked for me. The lag is insane.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I'm just trying to imagine, say, Quake or Unreal Tournament fans having to hide everything like this just to continue playing that game on servers they maintain themselves.
The differences between the two games, in the context of allowing folks to spin up their own servers after support for the game has discontinued, is pretty fucking thin.
but aren't those games meant to be hosted by players?

Cracks in the veneer began to show quite soon after the closure. With the existence of the secret server (which indeed it still was for many) had been proven to the point where the usual attempts to discredit would no longer fly those cracks have taken on the form of yawning chasms, for awhile at any rate. Perhaps the revelation simply gave them sharper focus.

Quake and Unreal Tournament players don't need to hide anything because they bought permanent license to play the game and still retain that license.
We have a legacy of player hosted games that come from a time before gaming studios switched to the idea you must be online with them and recently to the idea you must be in a game as a service.
But to be honest unless using a LAN those old games could be astonishingly laggy, but you could have hours of fun when they weren't.

Understood; I'm talking the real effects on the IP holders considering these are online titles like CoH/CoV.
I don't feel there's a great reason for puns/devs to retain the right to forbid private server hosting after they've discontinued support for the title. And it isn't like we don't have examples in other genres to show us it wouldn't cripple developers or the industry at large to allow such server hosting after official support has been discontinued.

Are Nsoft making money out of private servers? No. Will they do their darnest to shut them down? Yes.
Look how far the genre has fallen. An MMO that people tried to keep a secret so the MASSES wouldn't find out and wreck the world. Also, so the corporate overlords wouldn't find out and spend money to quash them. It just shows how broken the entire genre is from top to bottom.
Yep.. sad.
When all is said and done, more is always said than done.

They would if new people wanted to play and had to buy the game to get in. But they sure aren't trying to make money off of the game now, so what's the big deal? No one else is, either, most of the time. Maybe a donation here or there, but I would agree with them if those private servers tried to charge a fee to play. Making money off of other peoples' work is never good, in my opinion.
Now, LIVE games that players try to make private servers for is another ball of wax, though servers with OLD versions of the games (WoW, EQ, UO, etc) gets a bit more acceptable to me as they are offering players an experience the current games no longer offer. Still, though, if these private servers are trying to make money, not good

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

The personal choices of privateers aren't the genre.
Picking up from my thread on how cash shops have changed and enough is never enough when it comes to the lucre for gaming companies, I have an idea for them to rake even more loot in.
How about they offer gamers 'server insurance' so if the game folds the server limps on and the fans still have something to play. "Kerching!" said the cash shop.
But they sure aren't trying to make money off of the game now, so what's the big deal?
If someone stole what you own would it be a big deal if they didn't make money on it?
If I've moved on and am doing many other things, not a problem at all. I'm not currently using it to make money, so why should I care?
This is different from say my TV, Truck, or PC. That I would have a problem with. This only works with "creative content", in my eyes.
PS: I don't have an "I must charge for everything" mentality that abounds today. If I create something, it's because I want to and love doing it, not to make money. That attitude seems to be lost in this wide open money grabbing society we live in.

More like you discarded something and gave up any interest in it because you no longer saw it as useful, and someone else, who already purchased a copy of that thing, still has an interest in using it.

There's been rumors since the game shut down that there's a secret server around people are playing, that is exactly like the original game, with our old accounts and everything.
Well due to recent leaks this has been confirmed by one of the representatives of the server.
Wondering what everybody's thoughts are on this? Being a long time CoH player, and it being one of my first real MMOs it does bother me that people have been playing a full fledged server that was kept secret for 6 years. At the same time I understand that if it was open publicly there's a very good chance it gets shut down by NCSoft's legal team.
Kinda shows exactly why it was kept secret...people like this idjit that acts like he was doing something for others by spilling the beans.
Now they have to close and move everything around, so he screws over everyone that was being given a chance to play. Surprised it took this long to be outed really...lot of trolls on-line take great pleasure in messing with others and acting all high and mighty, when they are really the lowest form of life there is.
Lineage 2 private servers seem to multiply like rabbits and, to my knowledge, unless they're blatantly outright charging for access, NC doesn't really care. Heck, they might not care even then.
And L2 *is* still live and making money for them.
Of all the publishers out there, I don't see NC as being one who bothers with going after things like that. After all, RMT was going on right in everyone's faces years before it became "mainstream" (aka Cash Shops and Microtransactions).
Frankly, I'm surprised there haven't been MORE CoX servers out there already.

Aren't many of NCSoft's games running on private servers, L1 and L2 for sure?
People hold up their cease and desist action against a Tabula Rasa private server but they were involved in and eventually lost an expensive lawsuit with RG and there could be a bit of butthurt on their side to see the game exterminated from existence.

Well, since the code has been kept under tight wraps by a group of self-selected arbiters of who should or shouldn't experience a CoX private server, we don't know if NCSoft would've treated it like L2 or not.
In the end, I agree with @Torval. All this is is a stark reminder of what a shitty thing this genre seems to have evolved into as it lurched away from the industry spotlight.

Anthem are looking for one, that could be my pitch "And then we charge the suckers for keeping the servers open, even when we never intend to close them...Kerching!"
