There's a possible update to this whole story, the person with the code is/has had discussions as of yesterday about releasing the code for the public to use.

But they sure aren't trying to make money off of the game now, so what's the big deal?

If someone stole what you own would it be a big deal if they didn't make money on it?

If I've moved on and am doing many other things, not a problem at all. I'm not currently using it to make money, so why should I care?

This is different from say my TV, Truck, or PC. That I would have a problem with. This only works with "creative content", in my eyes.

PS: I don't have an "I must charge for everything" mentality that abounds today. If I create something, it's because I want to and love doing it, not to make money. That attitude seems to be lost in this wide open money grabbing society we live in.
Umm, yeah, I always roll my eyes when performers or artists say in an interview they don't care about the money......

They never turn it down or give it all away....

    Just saying.
Well, NCsoft turned down city of heroes which was making money...

    So...

    It happens
Just as many, many people turn down jobs that pay, but too little. COX was never shut down because it didn’t make any money, it was shut down because it didn’t make enough.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

I think the artists are saying that they are doing their passion and their motivation wasn't money. The goal in life is to do something you love and get paid for it. That's what they're doing, no different than a teacher, it's just that they make the big bucks.

So yeah, when they say it isn't about the money, i believe them, it is about creativity and passion, and they are so good at what they do, they get paid millions for it.

I'm passionate about video games and have tried to create some, but I suck, so it goes no where. If i were to get rich doing it, it wouldn't be about the money, but I sure as hell would keep it.

    Oh snap. :)

WOW i just played, it was amazing and fun. I got to wonder if NCsoft leaked out that server to stunt Ship of heros and Titans , thay leave the servers alone for 2 months then force them to close down, killing any momentum, Ship of Heros or titans has ?

Unfortunately, I dont know much about CoH. Did NCSoft inhouse develop the project or were they just the publisher? If they were just the publisher, its kind of obvious why they wont bring it back. These things aren't as simple as just flipping a switch and off everyone goes.

    actually agree.

There ARE people that HATE what they do, but do it for the money. But these are the people who hate their live and are depressed and complain about their work endlessly. Money doesn't make one happy, it makes life easier yes, and its nice to afford stuff...but if one hates how they make money, generally for one its not gonna be a great product

A simple but great example is that I've had actual personal experience with (and I'm a coffee snob, if I was a zombie I'd just want coffee lol, coffee in morning, coffee in afternoon, coffee at night and again at midnight :P)...anyway that is starting to miss the point...

But someone HATES coffee, they hate the taste of coffee, they hate everything about coffee. But then they get a job at a coffee shop. Its a job, any job, so they take it. But...any time I got coffee from that person it tasted as bad as much as they hated the coffee they make.

If you hate making a product even if it makes one a bunch of money, generally its gonna be a junk product. No passion, no love, no enjoyment goes into making it and it often (not always of course) shows in the final product.
Anyone who has ever tasted coffee that I've brewed can clearly tell that I despise coffee and all things flavored with it.

There are witches who've asked for my secret so they can use it in their brews.

The publisher. I believe Cryptic and Paragon Studios actually created the game :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Not in-house project, but it's theirs now fully.

CoH was made and operated by Cryptic, under the publishing of Ncsoft.
Then Cryptic decided to create a new game (originally a Marvel superhero MMO but after Marvel backed out it became CO, with the IP of pen-and-paper rpg Champions), and they left CoH all behind, sold everything to Ncsoft.

So from that point on, CoH belongs fully to them, development, operation and publishing. Ncsoft created Paragon, an inside dev studio, to support and expand CoH, and the stuff added after 2007 was all their work.
