Jeez, if the posters here are actually representative of AO's community I hope the game gets shuttered. No wonder they needed to take drastic measures to drive the remaining  players to the cash shop, you guys probably drove away all the decent players.
Not due to cash shops, but that's what happened in Rise of Agon. New players and people who followed the DF games for years were asking for some diversity, more possible play styles and the hard core fan base, probably 100 people, drove them all away telling them how stupid and shit they were.

Toxic people. Wouldn't be surprised if the "hard core" AO fans are the same.

The game is close to 18 yrs old now. The relationship some players have with this game have lasted longer than an average marriage. A toxic player base isn't the right description. I would say it's like a protective parent and the game is an abused child and funcom is the wife beater.

What happens when your dragging around a piece of baggage that barely carries its own weight anymore? Do you keep it just because your wife likes it, drop it and get a new one, or modify it to try and increase is caring capacity?

If you read their annual financial documents the game still makes money. They have been taking money from ao to fund other projects for years. Do you really think server upkeep fees are bankrupting them? They probably have ao,aoc and tsw in the same server farm.

Spamming ads to buy more at someone paying $15 a month or who already has a 6-12 sub already isn't going to motivate them to buy more...

I seem to remember AO having plans for billboard advertisements in game that companies could hire. Can't remember whether they ever implemented it - so long ago.
