FFXIV is great. There is however a long road to go before the story or game gets good. You will have to slog through 40 lvls of garbage. After that FFXIV becomes my favorite MMO of all time. I play it twice a week. I am waiting for the new xpac with bated breath.

I like FFXIV, it’s the only mmo I keep an annual sub running on.

that being said, I won’t say it’s for everyone. I don’t even play full time.

Its almost like three different games.

when you first start, or on release of new content, it’s extremely story line based: exactly what you expect from a FF title. I love this part of the game, From the very beginning it does start slow, but it does pick up, particularly once you hit 50. The current two xpacs have both been amazing.

the second is the post-level cap grinding game. I can’t get into that, and always take a good break when I hit this part. If you enjoy WoW-style raiding it may be up your alley though.

the third are the various metas and crafting. I find these entertaining distractions, but if I’m stuck on the gear grind part they aren’t enough to keep me by themselves.

also, the soundtrack, especially primal fights: worth the price of admission for that alone.

I can only write about my own experience as I joined the game and started over at the beginning of this year. To this point, I have a few (current) max level classes, but I'm not at the end of the story arc yet, nor I have done any end game content. I also haven't touched any of the crafting classes at all.

Is it worth it? I would say that personally I feel it is worth it, but in general it highly depends on what you enjoy out of mmorpgs. For example, I don't think I would recommend FFXIV to PvPers.

I believe the first 30 levels are free, so you can check the arguably slower to build up part of the game. If you do like the aesthetic, the story and if you keep in mind that eventually the combat will become a lot faster, then perhaps this is a game that you will enjoy for a time.

The answer is the same for nearly all games, except maybe WoW, and very much depends on your playstyle.

If you just want to go slow, knock around, and enjoy the scenery as you advance - all of these older games are fine for that.

But if you are in a hurry to get to end game content, playing a game where you are years behind could be maddening. Maybe if you have friends who will power level you.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Thanks for the responses. So far ive tried to trial and im only on lvl 20 but I find it very boring and grindy and the lack of voice acting is responsible for it not being immersive. I am not reading any of the quests i am just accepting thje mall and grinding them to level. I know it is early on, but when should i start paying attention to reading the quests? I like that there is one big story for the entire game. I REALLY dislike the MMO's like WoW that have a different story for every zone. I like doing side quests in diff zones but i want one big story like Guildwars 1 did. Is this what FF14 does? One big story for the whole game? Also, i find the FF14 feels VERY small so far. The zonres are TINY compared to the other MMOS. Fill me in guys

Everything you encountered here is how the game is. ONE BIG STORY, the zones are small and if I remember the dungeons are short fast runs. Very non mmorpg like.

ya but i really hate the small zones so far. IT really ruins the immersion. Feels more like a nintendo game not an MMO. i dunno im trying hard to like it. It has such good reviews and being labeled as one of the best games out right now if not the best. IT jstu feels so 'asiany' to me. Feels cheap if that makes sense. ASian mmos always remind me of cheap knock off mmo's

How about that Asian cowboy music !....... Listen to this Chocobo music. It's a cross between Cowboy and video game golf.

The entire sound track makes me want to slit my wrist.

Maybe they should put their shoes on :(

I quit the first 2 times i tried it , feeling similar to you , , stuck it out the third time , with advice from a friend , Just get to 30 and get your Job ( mine was Bard) Then the game and your class really start to flesh itslef out , Its a great game , a great story ( if you enjoy FF story) Well worth the time and really fun as you progress..

Areas do get bigger , Much Bigger

I got bored with it faster than just about any MMO I have ever played...Yes different strokes for different folks but I thought it was flat out awful. Way too stuck on rails for my tastes.

I laugh when dude says worst mmorpg he has ever played.it offers an IDENTICAL experience as the other games ,only looks better and offers a LOT more.NO it is not as linear as other games either, there is stuff to do that is NOT running auto dungeons 24/7.

Further more ,other than FFXI and Runes of Magic, you get a sub class system, not as good as FFXI but is still better than every other SIMPLE altaholic game.
SO idk what people expect from a game and even if they expect more which is perfectly fine, the argument this is worse than the other clones is simply not true,it is IDENTICAL and MORE.

I know what the game lacks,i know it's design flaws or weaknesses,i have heard very few complaints that are just .All these games are linear,is this worse than the others,oh hell no,could it be better, most certainly but imo it is the best choice out there but i choose NONE of the mmorpg's right now,i rather play Atlas for a more realistic role play experience.

FFXI is or was the absolute toughest to get in to and learn but FFXIV is a near second,it is not as hand holding as many of the others so i can see some being frustrated or bored because it will be a very slow start to their learning process.

If you like mmorpg games with invisible walls so you cant jump in the water or jump from hills or take other shortcuts or if you like games that has alot of quest where you basicly run to npc from npc to deliver objects or if you like poorly gameplay with 2010 gfx then this game is for you

No.  Not unless you really want to deal with the absolute slog of main story quests.  I'm talking about literally thousands of quests that are 100% required to progress.

Even the "fun" dungeons/instances are brain-dead now because everyone is so OP even with level sync that you just faceroll them all and if you're watching a cutscene the group will be halfway done with the dungeon.

Honestly if you like the WoW formula with FF then I would say it's worth it IF you buy a story skip potion and go back and do that when you feel like it.  Otherwise....zzzzzzzzzzz

Been playing since closed beta of version 1.0 before ARR and been subbed ever since first version so yes to me it's worth it. It's a lot like wow but with FF skin and a bit slower but has few things that are better than wow like graphics, no need for alt as you can level all classes and all crafts with 1 char, can do a lot as a casual except end game raids and extreme trials. It's big on fashion and lots of mounts and you can swim underwater, some areas you can use flying mounts. Personally I like the old FF11 better but since I played FF11 since 2003 I moved on to FF14 and looking forward to the next expac soon. I'm in dilemma atm with classic wow coming soon I feel like giving it a fair chance since I have very fond memory of wow TBC  and classic is very similar to that.

Why cant they just make a damn MMO with the best elements from each.

    1. 1 huge story for the entire game with many side quests instead of a main story for every area WITH VOICE ACTING FOR EVERY QUEST

    2. Tons of skills for every class and race available as you level like guildwars 1

    3. Totally customizable skill builds like Guildwars 1 and literally no other game

    4. Good graphics BDO etc.

    5. Tons of armors and weapons that look amazing

    6. Ultra rare drops like WoW back in the day

    7. Lots of raids and dungeons that are VERY hard and take strategy that cant be speed ran

Man i can go on and on and on. Why cant these developers think like this? IT seems like MMOs alwasy have a couple of these things but not all of them
