How so? I thought it was hands-down one of the best blobbers to come out in decades. Great combat, great mechanics, great puzzles, etc. What specifically was disappointing in retrospect?

I think the only fair criticism is the disparity of mechanics/gameplay between BT1-3 and 4. But taken as a new form blobber it is a great game.

Better than the last attempted remake of the game which was a complete flop, albeit the only good thing in it was the drinking song but even that got old fairly quickly.

For me personally there are a ton of better games that have come out in that space over the last few years. For this game, with this IP, I think many expected a genre defining title.
    Instead many thought it was.....meh.

What games in that space? There are only a handful of rpg blobbers that have come out (blobbers with npcs, stories, towns, quests, etc) - the rest of them have been pure dungeon crawlers, and mostly RT strafing ones at that. In this specific space there has only been Might & Magic X (another game I loved but was criticized for not following the gameplay mechanic of 6-8), Grimoire, and the remakes of Realms of Arkania 1 and 2. Star Crawlers is more of a hybrid with arpg-diablo-like itemization and faction grinding. Some lesser known ones like Swords and Sorcery - Underworld. There are some other minor ones that are too lite to be included. The only other one I can think of is that recent Operencia game, but that had no towns, shops, etc, so falls more into the pure dungeon crawler camp like Grimrock.

There isn't really anything in this space to compare it with other than MMX, which had the same criticism, but was still a fantastic game. Torval had the main criticism I've seen - the performance. This new version is supposed to completely address this. We'll see.
