Warhammer 40K is coming to the small screen thanks to a new partnership between Games Workshop and Golden Globe winner Frank Spotnitz (X-Files, Man in the High Castle). Big Light Productions will be in charge of production that is based on a character named Gregor Eisenhorn, an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos.

This has potential to be dark, gritty and really good, or really SyFy Channel type cheese

Just finished reading the Eisenhorn books, really hope they actually make something decent out of it.

I hope they have the budget to do 40k justice. It could end up really really cheesy quite fast if it has a low budget.

I read the whole article and they were suspiciously quiet about whether this was live action or animated.

    Live Action:  Fucking hell yes.

Animated:  I fart in your general direction.

Given GW's track record over the years, I imagine this will be pretty awful. I hold out hope that I will be pleasantly surprised.

Hope all the crusaders dont make a mess of it due to its violence, gore, racism, classism, and any other rallying cry they can come up with. 40k has a core audience that wants 40k not Steven Universe. Servitors, xenos purging, planetary governors living it up while the rest of the population eat their own dead for protein. ..its not a universe for most networks, especially nowadays where everything is watered down crap

If I recall correctly, the Eisenhorn novels never really went as grim dark as most of wider 40k.  Pretty sure most of the stuff in them would be suitable for mature networks.  Though I could be wrong and maybe there's something really gory and graphic like the Daemonculaba or something, but pretty sure most of the Eisenhorn novels are more like a fantastical mature detective series fighting against a very very obvious evil (the darker aspects of Chaos) rather than the "Purge all xenos even if they're peaceful!  Worship the emperor or die!  Eat your own dead for protein!" aspects of the setting.

It will most likely be up to the studio. Look at the Doom movie (which has its charms but ultimately a lot of issues) where they changed the portal from hell among a whole lot of other things.

If it was an animated series they could probably go into the deep dark just look at Berserk and its popularity.

Not all animation is created equal e.g. original Lion King vs. new Lion King. (And Dark Crystal comes :)

Most modern TV shows actually have lots of "animation" in the guise of special effects. In fact without those effects a live action Warhammer series would probably suck!

So whilst I share your general concern I wouldn't dismiss an "animated" series right away.

Yeah, seeing all the money being thrown around by these companies looking for the next big thing to put on their streaming service, glad 40k might actually get a real shot. At least they picked the correct character/setting to start with, Eisenhorn is pretty much the best intro book series you can suggest to someone new to 40k. Space FBI agent and his crew dealing with crimes, mysteries, and other general craziness gives a pretty easy hook for a wider general audience. Assuming it continues along they can slowly introduce more concepts from the IP, ie Astartes.

We've had a lot of pretty grim, dark, socially problematic tv series made, and become massively successful shows in recent years, so...

If it's anything close to the production value and writing of The Expanse it could be quite good.

Doesn't "crusaders" generally works for inquisitors, not against them? ;)

I am in the totally opposite bandwagon than you. I hate live action so much. If they don't have massive budgets to get the CG stuff right live action looks horrible. You know so much of this would have green screen because of the settings. Just look at the World of Warcraft movie an you can see how bad live action can be.

Would much prefer a very well done animated if the budget isn't there as it can be done for a lot less with better quality.

Sounds like it is live action:

Also, I don't think Frank Spotnitz ever produced animated series:

Not sure they will remain true to the books, no doubt this will get a make over. Assassin babes in skin suits will be shelved, there will be more human interest and less situations solved with a flamer, maybe we will have a slacker inquisitor's apprentice. :)

I'm aware that most of GW related stuff is rather mediocre lately, but this is Gregor...I'll not get my hopes up, but it could be good. Dan's writing style lends itself more to comics or Real Time imo. And these(Gregor + Gideon) could be easily made unto interesting kinda harsh SF action / mystery series. And they can easily cut away the truly gruesome stuff without losing anything of note. Or if it would be, anger due to mutilation can easily be reframed.
How easy will that be? I tried to get a few quotes form the books to prove my point. But then found this anecdotal forum signature that rather sums up why TV producers will be giving this a make over laid on with a very big trowel:

"40k - where the genocidal, xenocidal, fascist, ultraconservative zealots with a morbid fear of technology and an unhealthy fondness for burning things... are the good guys.
    —A forum signature."
