You're right, people will never learn...to read. This isn't the announcement of a kickstarter or any other crowdfunding initiative.
As Raph said himself, this is a funding announcement:
We have to do a funding announcement because when you take venture capital, you end up filing a Form D to the SEC, show up on websites and legal databases, all that. So you want to get your story out there.
Whether they did an announcement or not, the information is going to get out, so it makes sense to make a formal announcement so the people they are trying to attract right now (not you or me) will know about it.
My level of trust is higher for Ralph than it is for Garriott at this point. If I had to pick 2 old school mmo designers to make new MMOs for me to play they would be Aradune and RK. And they both are making MMOs.
Throw me into the cautious optimism crowd.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.
Trust isn't really in the picture for me. He's not asking for it at this point and I don't see any reason to make a judgement on that, one way or another, until I get to that point.
I do have a lot of confidence that he will take a well reasoned approach to development and that the virtual reality he wants to create will be the primary creative driver. Now we'll have to see what sort of game this studio wants to create and what "sandbox" means to them.
Raph has always been a good read about MMO design, decisions and consequences in articles and blogs. His writings about the genre have always been intelligent, interesting and thought provoking. That's what sets him apart in my mind from the other "dinosaurs."
I'm a lot more interested in what he may want to design than what other old-timers have gotten into.

Raph seems a lot more likely to do something "different". I don't expect him to simply produce the same game he did previously. My concern is if he will be allowed to deviate far from well-trodden paths and give us something that changes our definition of what an MMORPG is. Boundaries need pushing occasionally. Other "dino designers" haven't had that kind of ambition to date.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Number one: It's too soon to care about this shit. Number two: By the time it is ready to care, no body will anymore.
If I SMH any harder I will give myself a concussion.
Umm, you do realize they have to announce a project in order to recruit people to make a demo, proof concept etc? Games have been doing that (much like other businesses) forever. It's only because people grab any tiny piece of information to be cynical/hyped/depressed/overjoyed about in this particular genre that this is even a topic of discussion.
It's not a big deal, a company is starting a project and they need to register as a company and recruit people to work said project. It happens daily, but again it's only ever news in this arena as drama queens need their drama.

But MMOs take years to develop. They need to figure out how to pitch this thing behind closed doors 1st. Get the plan, funding and development squared away before anything is announced. Then, actually develop something more than a Tech Demo and have it to show for.
THEN...........ignite the hype.
This nonsense will take a few years just to figure out what he thinks he wants to build, then how many more years getting the thing off the ground, and then when it gets to Alpha/Beta stages, Hype's exhausted, nobody cares and the crowd funding resource has also dried up........which BTW, he will have already owed a finished product to so there goes the all the profits that have already been spent.
Yeah, I'll get hyped when I see a beta that looks good. Until then....ya got nuthin. Ideas are cheap.
I'm curious to see what'll come out of this. Good luck, Raph!

Christ Roberts, Brad McQuaid and Raph Koster walk into a bar...
Raph sits down and buys a beer, Chris tries to find someone to buy him a beer, and Brad excuses himself and goes to the bathroom.

Christ Roberts, Brad McQuaid and Raph Koster walk into a bar...
Chris makes a jpeg of the beer and sells that for thousands of dollars, Brad trades his beer for “something stronger” and after carefully studying the beer Raph decides to brew a better one himself.
That is what you meant right?
Perhaps we could also add that Todd would let a hundred people fight over his beer while Richard is occupied with other fluids?

In other news it would appear that everyone here has lost all hope when it comes to new MMORPGs being anything other than Korean F2P garbage or western indie fails.

Do you remember the James Bond movie Casino Royale, where Bond is strapped into a seatless chair and his testicles are beaten with a knotted rope? That's kind of the status of my hope for mmorpgs these days. Trying to hang in there, but taking a wicked beating.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Did RK just give a funding announcement (which is quasi required), or did he promise to marry all MMORPG players? I'm confused because there's all this talk about trust and disappointment that doesn't seem warranted.

"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
What's interesting was reading Koster's series of articles on the design of SWG. The game pretty much appeared to be rushed, haphazard, slapdashed into shape. Some of its fav features were actually implemented over Koster's advice.
On the other hand, Koster seems to be self aware, so that's a big plus. He's spent decades theory-crafting, so the conceptual framework should be there. Cross fingers.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Years ago on some discussion forums, he mentioned how Lucas Arts was super secretive about all the prequel stuff with SOE while they were designing SWG. He stated that they only had the same trailers from EP1 as everyone else to draw from in the earlier stages; that and whatever was in the Star Wars lore library. This one of the reasons it seemed like there was a lot of expanded universe stuff in SWG.
While it's good news he got funding the crappy part of the overall MMORPG situation is that THE western company(Amazon) capable of taking us out of the dark ages has been commandeered into never doing a damn thing for gaming because of their first hires. True visionary MMORPG LEGENDS Koster, McQuaid, Jacobs are all out in the wilds on their own while bureaucrat "devs" locked in their positions at AGS only working to benefit themselves. Imagine what these guys could accomplish under the same roof with proper support/funding and maybe even throw a Brevik in there just for fun.
I hate to say this cause I would've liked a western company to be the one that benefits but maybe Tencent should look into swooping up all these games with actual ideas behind them to add to their launcher.
