The best mmorpgs for music - you decide

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630
I think Guild Wars II probably has the best music among mmorpgs, for my taste anyway.

But I also remain haunted by the erie, often melancholy, tunes in original Everquest.

Who gets your best of show award?

And ny "mmorpg," I mean as you define it (and I don't care for purposes of this post how you define it).

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Lineage 2 had my favorite music. Used to listen to the soundtrack of the main towns while doing schoolwork.

    Definitely Lineage 2.

Elder Scrolls Online has great music even if I'm not so keen on the game.

Also, "definitely" guild wars/guild wars 2.

I'll go with SWG, purely because the iconic music tapped into already pleasant memories of the films and thus made me feel good.

Beyond that, I just don't value music in my computer games. With MMORPGs specifically, I was almost always on voice chat so I'd have the music muted and the rest of the sound effects turned down. With other genres I have mixed feelings. Most RPGs I don't like the music, but I love the rest of the sound effects, especially the ambient sound effects. Strategy or sim games, the music feels much more important and really gives the game it's "feel", but, due to the length of time I end up playing these types of games, I'm usually bored stiff of the music by the end.

Finally, back when I was still using 2 24" monitors, it was very common for me to put on netflix on the second monitor. Most games are either pretty shallow (all action games) or slow paced (strat and sim) and my attention would wander. So, the second monitor with netflix was perfect for taking up the rest of my attention and prevent me from just quitting the game. However, netflix meant I'd have to mute nearly all game sounds.

LotRO, that entire soundtrack is one big ‘Welcome home’ for me. It makes me smile every single time I log in, it has been since Beta.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

100% agree on this. You can tell a definite difference in quality during the expansions when Chance Thomas wasn't used either. So glad he's back doing the music for that game.

Other than that, ESO has one of the best soundtracks thanks to the use of leitmotifs with other TES music.

All these you guys mentioned are great, some of them awesome even, but nothing beats FFXIV music, and not to mention Trials/Raids/Dungeons music in FFXIV. It's the best for me.

This piece of music is out of this world https://youtu.be/nmGF2iif0mM?t=185

I don't think GW2 has the best music... I think Jeremy Soule has the best music and since he left (and his musics were changed for new ones after expansions) I don't think it holds that position anymore.

But if you would ask me when I played pre exp then, yes, it is.

Now... Lotro would take the trophy.

One of the reasons I didn't care to make mundaine tasks, deeds and carry pies around the shire was the sound tracks.

The reasons I didn't mind rolling new characters (besides everything else) was the game score.

The music in LoTrO takes risks for the sake of world building and I respect that and am in awe in equal parts. It fits the world, it fits the IP, it fits the maps they are used in...

    Masterpiece.
I guess when I said Guild Wars 2 I was thinking Jeremy Soule's music and didn't realize they changed it out.

Lord of the Rings Online has great music but there are some areas that are just atrocious. Part of this could be the awful synth sounds they use. At one point I had to turn the music off, so horrid was it.

That's EverQuest, for me. It's not necessarily "great music", but more a nostalgia kick for me. Even just booting up the game gets my heart pumping ;)

I agree with others about Guild Wars (1 & 2). Great range of music and probably "the best" for me :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I remember lineage 2 in the human starter area.

Otherwise, i never focus on it.

I need to start though, i like one of the starcraft 2 soundtracks . . . Sounds like a western thing.

But i may need to start playing lotro to hear the music.

world of warcraft has had consistently good music for 15 years despite some poor expansions gameplay wise, and lotro is awesome and relaxing,im sure there are many other good soundtracks but these are standouts.

Skyrim is an MMORPG now? Amathe did ask for MMORPG music

Or is this piece "Dragonborn Comes" in the ES:O game?

Jeremy Soule is one of the best best video game composers I've heard in the past 10-15 or so years. I was surprised to read that he has done music for the Guild Wars games.

I also agree that Skyrim has one of the best soundtracks I've heard ;)

That would be Lotro for me. No close second.
How each piece made each zone even more immersive because of top notch music.

Granted I have not played all the game you have listed.

yeah but some of the pieces have horrible synthesizer sounds. Unless they have rectified that in the past few years, they are practically unlistenable.

    Whoa, a necro thread!

Anywayz, I grew bored of "generic fantasy theme" kind of music over time and I grew to enjoy games with variety of music genres. And in terms of variety of styles (and the way those styles are used in actual game) - nothing still beats FFXIV. You got like, everything, from:

    To:

    and anything in between, like:

For my taste? PSO2. Jazzy, upbeat, not too garage band metal like other mmo.

But in terms of the best music, which may not be my taste but fits an atmosphere? FFXI hands down.......
