Same with photos of menu items in a restaurant,  my food never looks much like the item pictured.

If only that hot girl or boy is as cool a person as your brain is insisting they are.  Isn't this one of life's big common problems?

Normally I would agree but I just started Metro Exodus with Graphical settings on max and man, that game looks gorgeous in motion. Much better then the screenshots imo, especially with all the snow etc.

Most other games, yeah, especially with a UI missing in most promotional screens.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

This is exactly why reveal trailers mean nothing to me. I don't care about fancy cgi videos, I want to see ACTUAL combat footage or don't care.

Go ahead and say it, why does SC look better in screen shots than it plays?

I wasn't focused on that game. And honestly, I'm mainly a PvE player. So far SC seems to be mostly PvP, so I don't know how it plays in any way that is relevant to me.

I may not have understood your post, and if so, my bad, sorry.

Except in Thai resturants sometimes it comes looking better than it looked in the menu.

I was thinking more along the CGI Trailer avenue. I've seen some gorgeous, fun looking trailers that make actual gameplay tons worse, by comparison.

ESO's trailer quickly comes to mind for me. Rope climbing? Awesome! Not to be found in the actual game, I believe. Blizzard is a master of CGI Trailers that don't even come close to actual gameplay.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Meh, when you look at top-shelf CGI and things such as "deep fake" systems and the hardware and rendering needed, you realize it'll be a long, long time before ingame graphics match the trailers.
    faster than we realize

Technology advances via exponential curve, not linear - and human brains think in linear fashion.

So we think - well it took 20 years to get the graphics to today - so it's gonna take another 20 years before it gets twice as good.

But it doesn't work like that at all in reality - because of this:

We haven't hit the "knee of the curve" yet - once we do - the rate of advancement speeds way beyond what we expect.

Bullshit as usual. Moore's law isn't bearing out. There is no reason this fantasy will either. In fact, this one has even less legs to stand on. Graphics will get better, but the idea that we haven't hit the knee yet is bad speculation in my opinion.

Indeed (not sure about the as usual mind you), for processing power I think Moore's law failed over ten years ago. Also different types of technology advance at different rates, the rates themselves vary over time. Over the last thirty years processing power, battery efficiency and miniaturisation have probably had the biggest leaps forward. This allowed mobile phones to be developed in the 90's that were practical for general use. This also shows how much consumer demand drives innovation. The money poured by phone companies into all areas to do with smartphones led to swift developments in all those areas and in screen types, you name it.

Often though you can put as much money as you want into something and get little progress, there are no guarantees.
