Still- my conclusion- the writers have terrible taste for games
Maybe you're the one with bad taste? I only see one potentially bad game here - Dauntless. Maybe you've just become too jaded to feel anything.
No mention of Disco Elysium - means they dont know shit.
It's not me, sorry
Maybe they didn't play Disco Elysium. Or maybe they didn't like it.
I hear great things but I would never touch it as the setting is of no interest to me. I'm sure it's an amazing game and that a lot of role playing games might learn a thing or two from it from what I've read.
I still won't play it.
Any game site that doesnt have a staff member who has played one of the best games of the year - yeah no excuse for that.
It's like their job to ar least try top games.
Imagine a game PC video game site where not a single staff member has ever played WoW or Skyrim
Come on man.
Disco Elysium isn't a Skyrim or WoW. It is an indie game. Indie games fly under the radar all the time.
I know for damn sure that I don't play indie games unless they 1) fall into a genre that I like and 2) receive massive popular word of mouth. There are far too many bad indie games to sift through the pile.
Now that Disco Elysium has met both of the above criteria, I am going to play it of course, but just because a game is considered incredible doesn't mean one should consider it a mandatory play.
Sometimes, we'll also refuse to play a game for reasons that have nothing to do with its quality. I don't tend to like post-apocalyptic games or barbarians. I very rarely play any game which has a pre-set female main character (which is why I haven't played Horizon, Tomb Raider, or Control). I don't do horror. I don't like first person camera.
A lot of really good games fall into criteria like the above, and I imagine you also have exclusionary criteria of your own.
For those who are wondering - I really appreciate the feedback here. It's been an interesting few months for sure.
As for our MMO lists, we're going to be doing features all next week on our MMOs of the Decade, breaking down the MMOs that were influential on each of us over the last ten years. So stay tuned for that.
That’s great and all... but we get those every few months. So your actually saying MMORPG.COM is skipping an MMORPG game of the year?
Pretty sad on many levels.
No he's not.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Zelda games have come in various different forms over the years, but this one stands out for all the right reasons. A crossover from Crypt of the Necrodancer, this Zelda spinoff is set in the similar realms, but plays as a fun and exciting new adventure. The rhythmic gameplay highlights the stellar soundtrack Cadence of Hyrule has, and the visuals are vibrant and reminiscent of older Zelda games. This game also brought a nice difficulty challenge to it, which made it feel even sweeter finishing this game off. Overall, this game was a big surprise to 2019, and a crossover very well done.
Upvote for Seth if this were a site where I could upvote.
Just goes to show that if you raise your son right he can grow up to be the lead dev in this game. I knew what I was doing when he was 5 and I bought him his first Gameboy

I'm going to mimic the other complaints here. There are literally dozens of "newsworthy" things happening across the MMORPG genre, every day, which could easily be covered if any of the staff actually researched (or even played) any MMORPG's.
It does seem to me that the majority, or perhaps all, of the non-opinion pieces are just pre-written advertisements from various companies.
If this is what you are, now... and it obviously is, change the name of the website; you can still have the mmorpg.com domain redirect to whatever your new website will be called.
I'm with DMKano on this one: There is a difference between entertainment in your house and a site that is "work" missing out the best game of the year.
It's absurd.
To avoid alienation I try to check even games I dislike. To live in an echo chamber is not something someone should strive for.
And... I'm sorry... This list is the avatar of our WTF button.
All of this "OMG YOU MISSED THE BEST GAME OF THE YEAR!! ABSURD!!" shit is ridiculous.
YOU think it's the best game of the year. Obviously we didn't.
The thing about doing game reviews, and writing about video games in general, IT'S ALL SUBJECTIVE.
The games that I like and praise, you might not. Hence: Subjective.

I barely have time to do anything on MMORPG.com or the other website right now. School has taken over my priorities. So I play what I can/when I can. I apologize if that happens to not include a game that YOU personally consider the "best game."
MMORPG's and MMOs in general are extremely stagnant right now, one would think you would understand that.
Some of you need to chill out. I guess MMORPG needs to reach out and hire you, since you apparently know how to do the job so well. Oh, and the pay is $0 btw.
TLDR:
You saw the title of the article and chose to click on it. You have only yourself to blame for reading something you didn't want to read. Don't be that person.

It won game awards 2019.
It won a bunch of video game awards.
This is not a game that's under the radar at all.
Its just an epic fail on mmorpgs site to have missed it is all.
Its inexcusable
lol I guess based on that, Death Stranding should be on the list too... and Fortnite.
We should just rehash the game awards, because that's what DMKano wants. Sounds legit. Lets not bother with whether the games in question were actually played by the staff.
I liked Control till the end. I read every lore note, beat every optional boss, and was in love with what I played but the ending came out of nowhere as if they were holding back the real ending for the DLC. I actually hated it so much I sold it and don't plan on playing any of the upcoming DLC. Still a good game though.
Fire Emblem:Three Houses I am playing now and its one game that I wish I had more time for. When I am not playing it, I am thinking about playing it, and that is rare for me to find a game that does that to me. I understand why @Aeander is so up in arms about this game. I am only six hours in. Playing on Hard and Classic mode for my first playthrough.
It's just a damn good game. Over 200 hours of quality SRPG content with immense replayability, a lovable cast, and a stellar soundtrack.
And I think it's a series that needs a passionate community outreach. I remember when poor sales in the GC/Wii era and the remake of the first game nearly caused the series to be canceled. Awakening was intended to be the last game, and I don't wish to see that happen to my favorite franchise ever again.

Right?
Yeah... we are praising this nothing of a game that is bad but our bias won't let us see that.
Sure... You are absolutely right since it wasn't critically aclaimed nor received many titles and awards.
Fortnite and Death Stranding also received awards. Both have had great reviews by critics. Neither of them mean a thing to me personally. If I were to do a best of for this year, neither Fortnite, nor Death Stranding, nor Disco Elysium would be on my list, because I didn't play them.
So what's the point? If you're going to little girl cry over one game that won awards not getting a mention from staff, shouldn't you cry over every game that won awards and was critically acclaimed but also didn't get a mention?
It's almost like you didn't read the article, each person chose games specific to them, it was the staffs pick. Even if every single one did play the game, does it mean that they have to choose it over something they enjoyed more just because it won awards and critics say it's good?

Right?
You are completely missing the point.
The point being this is a mmoRPG site missing one of the best RPG games period.
The fact that the staff didnt play this is a damn travesty.
Right?
In the same way that any well received game, film, or tv show that isn't consumed by relevant media outlets is a travesty, sure.
But I think you're still missing the point. Each member of staff got to choose their game of the year. Games that meant something to them. What if they did play it and they did like it, but it wasn't the game they thought personified the most enjoyment for the year?
Whether they did play it, or they didn't, isn't really relevant. If they didn't play it, then maybe it's a game the staff at some point should play.
If they did play it but didn't choose it, that's a different story altogether, and maybe it's closer to your original point that the staffs taste in games just differs from yours.
I just think it's silly to bash peoples personal opinions on what games they chose because your title wasn't selected. Most importantly you use critics and awards as an indicator that it *should* have been chosen.
If we based our opinions on what is popular, critically acclaimed, or had the best reviews.. what... we would be a community that spanks it to WoW all day?
Was surprised by this list, partly due to the complete lack of MMOs, partly due to not knowing most of the games lol. I think a lot of the negativity in this thread could have been avoided by a more appropriate article title, like "Best non-MMOs of the year".
As it stands, it just makes it look like non of the staff have actually enjoyed any MMO this year more than they enjoyed single player games. Given WoW Classic and expansions for some of the other big ones, this comes as a surprise. I would have thought that writers for a site dedicated to massively multiplayer games would have enjoyed an MMO more than anything else this year.
That said, my favourite game of the year has been Planet Zoo :P
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

How's that?
That wasn't nice, was it? Or, do you actually want me to recommend a game I've never played, nor had time to play and give an honest opinion of? It'd look just like the above comment.

Choosing to play something inferior (which is every game on the list in this article imo) over Disco Elysium is a failure in itself.
Nobody can force anyone to play something but we sure can point out when they pick way shittier games - in my opinion.
Also a few people is not indicative of the entire fanbase, trust me the fanbase is nowhere close to being as abrasive as me
So allow me to educate you on something.
First and foremost, when someone like you promotes a game, it marks it as a plague to be avoided by me.
Outside of that, I haven't had time to play much of anything between August and now. You see, I don't get paid to write here on this site. I do it for fun, to give my fair opinion on games so the viewers can make sound judgements on whether or not they should give the game a chance.
Instead, I rely on other means to support myself. Which means College, and a lot of it. You see, while you were gaming to your hearts content, coming in here flaming constantly, I was knee deep in Clinicals at a hospital, and studying my ass off to pass my finals in November.
So no, I didn't play Disco Elysium. And as such, there is no way I could recommend it. And for you to come in here and to say that my choice to play Fire Emblem: Three Houses (which released in July, and I had that month off), was a failure, is a bit...idiotic.
So I challenge you, instead of bashing on our choices, because it doesn't fit YOUR taste, write an in-depth review of Disco Elysium, post a link to it, and tell us why you think this was your top game of the year.
Last time I checked, this article was the staff choices, not reader choices. But, that doesn't mean you can't make your choice valid, in a meaningful, constructive way, instead of being an utter blatant troll.
Please say yes- because that would explain so much

1. I have never played Disco Elysium 2. I agree you are the only busy person on this site. Obviously. 3. If the only game you have played in half a year is a Nintendo Switch game you should probably really reconsider "voting". It's like voting for an Academy Award but only having watched one TV show (not even a movie) and writing that name down. 4. When there is a massive disconnect between the staff and patrons of a business. It usually ends well! 5. Do you not all have phones?

I don't think choice of playing it was a factor. I don't think game review sites are like book clubs where everyone is supposed to read the same book and then give their thought on it at the end.
I think that's asking a little much, and I'm pretty sure you're a smart enough guy to realize that as well lol.
I think you're also a little mistaken, I think most games on the list, at least the ones I've played, were pretty good. Disco Elysium being good doesn't make the games on the list bad. In the same way that if 5 games are nominated as the best of the year and only one wins, it doesn't mean the other games are terrible.

Mr. Jaded Trion Fanboy
You are confusing my personal opinion.
I am not claiming to be an authority here.
Did you not read the parts where I clearly say - my opinion?
You're the one going on a multi-page tirade because none of the handful of critics played your game or just liked something else better. No one even called your game bad until you exasperated the hell out of them.
You're the one calling some really great games shitty because they aren't your precious game.
No one else here is on anyone's ass for liking something that they liked less than their favorite game. Outside of that human gnat Alkarionlog, I mean. Are you on his level? I respect you more than that.

It does seem to me that the majority, or perhaps all, of the non-opinion pieces are just pre-written advertisements from various companies.
If this is what you are, now... and it obviously is, change the name of the website; you can still have the mmorpg.com domain redirect to whatever your new website will be called.
We should just rehash the game awards, because that's what DMKano wants. Sounds legit. Lets not bother with whether the games in question were actually played by the staff.
Right?
And I think it's a series that needs a passionate community outreach. I remember when poor sales in the GC/Wii era and the remake of the first game nearly caused the series to be canceled. Awakening was intended to be the last game, and I don't wish to see that happen to my favorite franchise ever again.

We'll bitch then also.
Stay tuned...
We'd probably complain about having too much money as well.
Gut Out!
What, me worry?
As it stands, it just makes it look like non of the staff have actually enjoyed any MMO this year more than they enjoyed single player games. Given WoW Classic and expansions for some of the other big ones, this comes as a surprise. I would have thought that writers for a site dedicated to massively multiplayer games would have enjoyed an MMO more than anything else this year.
That said, my favourite game of the year has been Planet Zoo :P
I hope to try it out one of these days myself.

Last time I checked, this article was the staff choices, not reader choices. But, that doesn't mean you can't make your choice valid, in a meaningful, constructive way, instead of being an utter blatant troll.
Like, OMG, you don't know who I am? You spend all your time on MMORPG.com and don't know who I am? Like OMG, that's so Absurd! SO ABSURD!

I have done free work myself, and free clients don't want to here "hey I'm doing this for free I have more important things on my plate." They want a good job done on whatever job you signed up to do.

You're the one calling some really great games shitty because they aren't your precious game.
No one else here is on anyone's ass for liking something that they liked less than their favorite game. Outside of that human gnat Alkarionlog, I mean. Are you on his level? I respect you more than that.
