I like that it's different. Props for different in a world of same.
Exactly - like I said it puts other games into perspective that are basically the same formula done to death.
I think it is the best RPG in the past few years. Inventive, smart and masterfully crafted.
For me its up there in the top 20 RPGs of all time for sure - its up there with Planescape Torment for sure.
Here you have an amazing ground braking RPG relesed this year - and the jokers on this site ... didn't even play it, lol
Not that awards mean much - but if I were a video game writer and I saw the above - maybe - just maybe - I might be obligated to at least give it a shot to see why this RPG is getting all these positive reviews and awards.
I know crazy talk - right?
But no - let me go play Dauntless instead.... yeah!
I think part of the issue is that this site isn't "quite" professional. Sometimes it hits professional square on but because it relies on devoted fans of the genre and the site to write articles, and a very nice option for long-time fans of the site, they don't necessarily have the training nor do they know how to address their viewers at times.
In short, it feels like a devoted but nice fan/family site that can sometimes really hit it on the head or completely miss. What it lacks "at times" in professionalism it makes up for with a great set of forums that invite discussion. Also, the breadth of content is nice.
Massively feels like a more professional site. But it doesn't feel like a great place to have great discussions.
So, having said that, it might make some sense that someone at the top didn't say "these are the top x games in this genre, let's look at them and see where they rank.
What was probably said was "hey, you all have played games this year, pick out the games that really resonated with you. And that's what they did.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Minesweeper - Top Game of 2019
The issue as you stated should be that articles should be written by dedicated video game journalists who played all the top games and then came up with the conclusion.
Someone who played like 6 games that aren't even top games and picking one out of that - like WTF is even the point - don't even ask that person to do a writeup as they are not even qualifed to make an educated opinion.
It's an embarrassment
Look, the site is not handing out awards. They are saying "this was their favorite game of the year." That is all. Period. They are not required to like or even play your "top games" (ignoring the fact that some of these ARE top games) to express their opinion.

To me, folks can like/love whatever they want. BUT I think it says a lot when the staff of a site named MMORPG.COM could not find a single MMORPG to list. Not one. Out of 10 entries...
If your passion is elsewhere then follow that passion! It's seemed for a while that this was a square peg/round hole situation and this to me just confirms that. Stop being a joykill. It's an embarassment.
He's acting like all the games chosen were terrible games because his game wasn't on the list.
That's really the issue here, and it's kind of silly all things considered.
No doubt it's probably a good game, but good games don't always resonate with everyone.
Somehow he also believes that just because a game gets good scores that everyone should play it.
Again, he misses the mark. That would mean that most of the people here who haven't played the most popular and well received MMOs of the past few years can't speak to MMO's at all?
We know that's not the case because of DMKanos preferences in MMOs. It's okay for the staff to have their own preferences too.
More importantly, this list would be much worse if everyone selected Disco Elysium, personally I'm happy to see such a varied list.
I like that it's different. Props for different in a world of same.

"Hate mob" - gotta love the labels for those with dissenting opinions.
Then the title should have been
"our staffers talk about random games they played this year"
NOT
"Top Games Of The Year 2019"
It is MMORPG's top games of the year 2019. As in THEIR top games. Not the industry as a whole. Not everyone's. Their's. This is no different from my "your top 10 games of the decade" thread in that sense.
And even if this was meant to be authoritative, WHICH IT IS NOT, so what? Is any vote that isn't for Disco Elysium invalid? Is nothing else allowed to win other than what you have arbitrarily decided is the winner?
And for that matter, have you played every game on this list to determine that is inferior to Disco Elysium?
Even if I grant you that Dauntless isn't good, it's also got value of its own. It's fun for a while, and some people enjoy it.

I can answer that, at least why my selection wasn't an MMORPG. This was for the 2019 year, and my MMO of choice at the moment is Guild Wars 2. I did play a ton of MMO's this year, but I haven't stuck with any of them for long.
It also just so happened that Guild Wars 2 didn't release an expansion this year, though there were plenty of content updates. The latest living world just didn't resonate with me much.
In terms of MMO's that I had the opportunity to review this year, I don't think I scored any of them over a 6.
That isn't to say that I'm not looking forward to a lot of MMO's. I think 2020 will be a fantastic year for MMO's as a whole, but 2019 fell short for me when it came to compelling new additions to the genre.

I'll do that as soon as you show me where a Best Game of 2019 has to be a new game for 2019? In the past we have always included previously launched games, including expansions.

I think people are arguing different points because they are looking at the same coin from different sides. No, it's clearly tails, no it's clearly heads!
There are three things going on:
1, various, non-paid writers were asked to give their favorites of the year. Probably ended at that.
2, Kano is looking at the site as a professional site that "should" have the entirety of it's staff as professional journalists and therefore there are things that a pro site would of course cover.
The reason these two things can't be reconciled is that the site's writers are volunteers that help drive the site. The site isn't completely professional as they don't get paid and they aren't pro-journalists. Yet some people will look at this site which is one of the leading sites covering mmorpg's and rpg's as a pro-site and not understand why it's not "being a pro site."
I know I had this reaction when a recent article was entitled in such a way that it seemed more like a fan starting a forum topic than an actual professional article. Or like the volunteer writer above taking the criticism personally when, if it was a professional would have just let it slide off.
I don't think either side is wrong, it depends on the perception of what is going on and what this site actually is. It's "pro" enough that people will think it should be professional all the time. It's "fan site" enough that people will be confused or annoyed that it sometimes doesn't meet the bar of a professional site.
Then the 3rd bit is "why aren't these mmorpg's" which of course leads back to the site having to expand to rpg's or games that touch on rpg's in order to fill out content.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Look this is a video game site - the whole point of this site is to cover, play and review as many games as possible - in my opinion - all the top games should be a no brainer - a requirement if you are writing "Best games of 2019" article.
It is their list - and this being a video game site - we should hold the staff to some kind of a standard as far as playing lots of games so that they can form an educated opinion as far as who really deserves the best of the year.
If you have staff that is not keeping up with the top games - they are failing at their job and the site is failing to deliver the quality content to the readers here.
That is clearly what happened here.
As far as which ones have I played - out of the games reviewed:
This is 100% my opinion:
Code vein - played it - was totally mediocre to me, wouldn't have even made the list for me, as a Dark Souls player at heart - this one just didn't deliver
Fire Emblem 3 houses - didn't play it as I can't stand the series - not my cup of tea but I understand that there are people who love it.
Marvel UA 3 - played for about 2 hours at friends house - totally meh
Oninaki - didn't play - not a fan of this type of game so not for me
Dauntless - played it - it's completely baffling that this made the list, it's average at best
Cadence of Hyrule - played it - it's actually pretty decent, cute and enjoyable but wouldn't make my top list
Remnat from the ashes - above average - played it but not a contender IMO
Borderlands 3 - yep - above average but still nowhere as good as predecessors in my opinion, but it would be a contender - makes sense that it made the list
Control - best RTX game I've played, questionable if good enough to be a contender - but I can see as an RTX features - it's the top game
Metro Exodus - I actually enjoyed this one a lot - so I'd put it on the list as a contender
If this was just a list from your average gamers not staff writing for a video game site - it would be totally fine and expected
BUT this is not the case - and hence my entire problem with this.
I hope this clarified it for you.
I mean, those are all your opinions, and it's totally fair (even though I disagree with all of your assessnents). But where do you draw the line?
If I were a professional, should I be expected to play and enjoy Sekiro? It won game of the year, officially. By your reasoning, everyone on staff here should play it.
If I were a game's journalist, should I quit my job because I don't enjoy Souls-likes and would not be able to honestly, from the bottom of my heart, be able to rate them at the same score that others clearly do?

I play 200-300 new games per year as an avid gamer - I expect the video game sites to keep up.
I hope this clarified it for you.
This mythical site you talk about doesn't exist. You don't have 20 - 30 journalists playing 300 games a year or even the "top games". What you're writing is fiction, which is pretty strange seeing as how, you should know better, seeing as how you've been around long enough.
Even worse is that you think that even if people did play Disco Elysium, and didn't put it on the list, that somehow it invalidates the list as a whole. You said it yourself RIGHT UP THERE, that you didn't play one of the best games of the year simply because it "wasn't your cup of tea".
So in that way, you can easily get over yourself and understand that, people don't have to live to your standards, and with 300 games a year under your belt, you're welcome to review each and every one of them, and see how that turns out for you.
Furthermore, their job, in this instance, was to write about games that they liked. They could have all played Disco Elysium, it changes nothing. Your point of view that it should have been picked is misguided, because it's THEIR choice, not yours. That doesn't make them unprofessional, and it doesn't make you right.

That's not my opinion, that's factual.
It doesn't require 20 journalists - and those site exists- we all know what those other game sites are.
This is factual.
People don't have to live up to my standards - but video game sites with MULTIPLE writers - some of which should be dedicated to playing RPGs since this is a mmoRPG site - should have played at least the 10 top RPG released this year.
That is my opinion.
It doesn't require 20 journalists or those sites exist? Those are two different points being made.
If you're talking about sites like IGN I think you'd be surprised. In many cases, a lot of the larger sites also don't cover everything out there. You'd be surprised how those "larger companies" don't have resources dedicated to covering many of the games on the market. It's quite saturated actually.
That being said, your opinion still doesn't make the point that their selections were any less professional. The list wasn't broken down by "this is our rpg pick, this is our action pick." it was broken down by what a specific person liked to play.
Your top pick wasn't any of their top picks, that doesn't mean they didn't play it. It doesn't make them wrong for not choosing it either. It just is.
There are a total of 213 game releases throughout the entirety of 2019 for the PC. That number grows to 313, and possibly a little further, I didn't count console games, so if you play 200-300 games per year, I'd expect you to have played Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and every game on the list.
You can call me unprofessional all you want, I don't really care, I don't see you writing here. I did my job writing a bi-weekly column for the viewers of this website, as well as reviews as I got them. My "job" isn't to satisfy you, it's to objectively explain a game to you so that you can form an opinion on the game itself, not my personal opinion of the game. My reviews look at the game, is it good, or is it trash? What qualities make it good? Why should you buy it, why should you care?
Unfortunately, I am not paid to sit here and play games all day long. Therefore some games get swept under the rug. I love the RPG genre, it's my main genre, but that doesn't mean I will love every RPG game that is released. Even if I would have had the time to do so, I'd probably have passed on Disco Elysium anyway. I don't like the art style of the game, it's not my cup of tea.
We weren't asked to do MMORPG of the year. We were asked to input for an article for your pleasure, an article consisting of games, we, the writers thought were the game of the year. Why would I include a game I've never played?
You're quick to judge us, yet you've not lived a day in our shoes and have absolutely no idea what goes on behind the scenes. So again I challenge you, write an in-depth review, post it, leave us a link, and let us dismantle every single word you wrote and tell you just how bad you are.
You seem to think I take this personally, and you're both right and wrong in the same breath. A vast majority of our writers are just like me. We don't get paid to write here for you guys. To have someone like DMKano continually shit on those writers is bullshit. This is an opinion piece, they weren't reviewing a game, and definitely weren't telling you to buy something. You're acting like YOUR opinion is the ONLY opinion that matters.
You can call me whatever you want, call me a illegitimate writer, call me a poser, call me a volunteer, I don't care. The simple fact is I write here for YOUR viewing pleasure, not mine. I could just as easily not. I did this for you guys, not for me, I get absolutely nothing out of this. It's things like this that make me not want to return to my column when time allows, someone being utterly ungrateful and outright disrespectful.
Do you actually like MMORPG.com? Do you want it to continue? Because your actions in this thread paint a stark picture.
It doesn't require 20 journalists or those sites exist? Those are two different points being made.

All of that is fine.
Both - it doesn't require 20 journalists, and those sites exist.
I am still fine to express my opinion that the top RPG of the year failing to make MMORPGs top games of 2019 list is a clear problem.
No? Is this opinion allowed on this forum?
The opinion is not only allowed, it is welcome, but I think it's childish to call the professionalism of the staff into question simply because of a difference in opinion.
We're not talking about objective views of the "top games of 2019" we're talking about biased personal views. You got to express yours, they got to express theirs, and they are different.
It makes sense that you hold their taste accountable... I mean.. I definitely question your taste if TRION was ever on your radar, but to each their own. It's okay to have opinions like that, it's what makes sites like this what they are. Places where we can discuss.

It just is.
Opinions really are a strange thing.
I mean, I live in a universe in which Souls likes are somehow considered masterpieces and not overly-frustrating wastes of time, money, hair, and patience.
And in this strange and absurd universe I have to respect that opinion. I manage somehow.
So many tears. I'd be willing to bet everyone here plays multiple forms of games on multiple platforms. It's ok to like and review other things.
I get they do it to keep making money and keep their lights on. But it is getting harder and harder to filter what new is about MMOs and what is about the pile of other games. I left this site for almost a year because of it. The community has ask many times to make clear labels on what article is about what genre. Or color code things. I do like the fact that when I check things like this. People are still expressing they wish this site would remember its roots more.

If only we lived in the MMORPG dominated era again.
There are so many bitter jaded people commenting like children in this thread. Who cares if they post about games, hardware, etc beyond just MMOs? WHo cares if their site is MMORPG if they cover that and more...which they do. I like that they expanded their scope and I think their articles are very well written. I've been a member for a very long time and feel like the staff they have now is right on even if I don't agree all the time with what they like or dislike. Everyone is entitled to opinions, so get over it or find a different site which is better, which there isn't.
You're quick to judge us, yet you've not lived a day in our shoes and have absolutely no idea what goes on behind the scenes. So again I challenge you, write an in-depth review, post it, leave us a link, and let us dismantle every single word you wrote and tell you just how bad you are.
I also wrote two that weren't published (and another that was) so I know what it's like to write something and rewrite it and put your heart into it knowing that it might not get published or might draw derision.
But for me, I'm used to performing and also used to having my work critiqued so I have experience not letting it bother me to my core.
Just saying.
ps: I'm very proud of that review. And stick by it.

Glad you're having fun with your Nintendo, or whatever.
Maybe, just maybe, we have an article incoming about our favorite MMOs of the decade? Maybe, just maybe, we play other types of games as well and want to celebrate that?
Wow, being a dick to any customers who don't agree with your decisions, I see. And remember that, we are your customers. Who do you think those banner ads and sponsored articles are meant to be seen by?
Sometimes it is hard to fathom how another person can like some games others see as really bad.
Well we used to have some young kids who used to sit in the back of the work truck with their cell phones playing Pokemon Go religiously.Poke Go is barely even a game,it is a phone app and a cheap game at that, yet those kids loved it for quite some time.
SIMPLE,yep often the simplest ideas attract people, some are sold just on a game trailer, yep never seen any actual game but they see a trailer and start to drool, yes those same kids in the back of the work truck would also do that.
I look for more of a mature game, not into seeing giant numbers on the screen 9 bazillion DAMAGE !!! or ridiculous spammy combat full of spins and jumps and 20 mobs fall dead.I like a bit of thinking, some in depth game play/design,i like gaming to also feel relaxing.
In saying that, that marvel game is so far off my list it is not funny, but if someone truly likes it,...whatever,why do i care.
Graphics in Code vein look horrible...why?Well the characters look like 2d paper dolls and do not fit the background graphics, they look separated from the game world.Aside from that ,never really seen any game play, just a pile of cutscenes and it is said to be a Souls type game which turns me off even more.
I have done ALL of this stuff in games before, new assets, different art does not do anything for me,i need to see NEW games, new ideas. That is why the ONLY game i enjoyed the past year was Atlas because i have never built and sailed in a game before ,especially one with gorgeous/realistic graphics. Also name ANY game, pets in games have pretty much been a joke but in Atlas it is taken to a whole new level.
So yeah games have to show me creativity or something new, otherwise why would i care?I already own hundreds of games,i don't need to buy new ones to repeat same old.

So what if what they liked wasn't an MMO? If MMOs would stop shitting themselves in public for even a year, this might not happen.
Stop being a joykill. It's an embarassment.
If your passion is elsewhere then follow that passion! It's seemed for a while that this was a square peg/round hole situation and this to me just confirms that. Gamespace.com is a great site that caters to all the games listed. A few people picking those games on the list, sure... but not one MMORPG?
