A mood piece closer to the current in-game artwork of CoE:

If this is what they use to help them in the creative process, so be it. I just question the judgement of showing it to their followers. If my team uses a blow-up doll to inspire the artists making the female models, I'm not going to post a picture of the doll and call it a mood piece (even if it is). Extreme example, but maybe less embarrassing.
...not extreme example just wrong.
Trolls making a mountain out of a molehill - business as usual...
Nonsense. SBS turned their small error in judgement into a mountain when they decided to use the nuclear option to remove not only the image but all related posts instead of just locking the thread or deleting it entirely.

All "we" did is hand them the shovel.
I bet we also didn't land on the moon either. I seen it on the internet, it must be true! Here we go, still mmorpg.com passing along trollish shit as news and everyone follows in suite believing it as the gospel of God himself... I think mmorpg.com has become the E-news of gaming news, at least it provides a few good chuckles every day.

Players misinterpret something (in this case what a pre-production mood piece actually means) they jump on the bandwaggon of others and critise, in classic pack mentality. Then when they actually find out the facts (though most would never bother even doing this) they blame everyone else but themselves for the misunderstanding/mistake
Sums up todays gaming community as a whole fairly well, unfortunately.
Is this the game I'm thinking of? The one for which 2019 was to be "the year of the storm" or some shit, but hasn't even made it out of the internal alpha testing phase after years of "development?" There's so many failed Kickstarter MMOs that have no chance of ever seeing release that I'm losing track.

Fortunately, the Internet "remembers."
Remembers what exactly? That there is a common practice in graphics design to photobash images to create an idea to present to the 'team' before investing a bunch of work (man hours) into a project? Sorry that seems to be to hard for everyone to understand. It really is getting old seeing trolls make up things on the internet as they see it. There is a clear difference between fact and fiction.
They removed the images and posts as explained in the post about the whole subject, because the masses do not or refuse to understand this common practice.

If these actually were concept "mood" pieces, then when did SBS put them together? It can't be before the creation dates of any of the individual sources, certainly. That should be relatively easy to verify.
Posting another artist's work in an altered form (the "mood" piece) requires permission (reprinting). Fine if they mashed together something for them to work from is fine, as long as it is for internal use. This wasn't internal as soon as they posted the image.
If SBS actually created a finished game and someone streamed images from their game and represented SBS' images as their own, I would support SBS in an effort to sue the people violating their IP rights. Same here, only SBS appears to be the transgressor. Creativity needs to be protected.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
The White Knights of SBS can't grasp the difference between internal and external presentation of their so called "photobashing" mood piece.
Presenting a photobashed piece to the public serves no purpose other than to cause confusion for obvious reasons. So, either SBS are completely incompetent by mistakenly showing an internal photobash piece to the public or they did in fact plagiarize concept art for public consumption.
I can give two shits about the game, never even looked at it. What I did see is a ton of misinformed zealots in this article and thread passing around misinformation, such as yourself.
Mood boards, mood 'pieces' are very common in the design world. Even if shared externally... There is nothing to 'protect' and that is the funniest thing I keep seeing in this thread.
I Admit, this was most likely meant to be an internal mood piece, so that the artist, designers, developers, basically the staff, could get an idea of what they were trying to build, the mood they were looking for, and yah, they look to what is already out there for that kind of stuff, see what's been done, as maybe someone else already visualized an idea you are trying to explain, and it's easier to just Google the images, make an art board with it, and show your team what you want them to work towards, then it is to try and build that idea from scratch.
With that said.. this game I wager has too many haters for something like that to be shared publicly, maybe on their private discord with their loyal & loving fan base, to just give them all something to toss ideas at and what have you, but something that preliminary, should not have left a very small circle of staff and trusted backers.

Like what Soulbound did by not giving any credit and scrubbing the watermark and putting their own logo on that photobashed mood piece.

But the MAPS are still okay right? We waited so long for the maps!
I hope they weren't damaged during this incident.
Gut Out!
Unfortunately, Caspian spilled coffee on the napkins the maps were drawn on before he could find a newbie artist willing to work for "exposure", so the maps are gone in all but memory.
Don't laugh, but the DSS mapping tool was broken by the SOE release, users noticed the npc occupation distributions were all out of whack to which SBS confirmed was a new bug caused by SOE.

I agree with people saying photobashing is normal (i.e. common and not bad).
But there's context that makes people's criticism relevant.
They have a studio head who seems full of himself and hard to listen to (as a casual observer, i have no clue what his colleagues and employees think).
They have had to go back on promises, and seemed to spin those reversals like they were some kind of proof of their superiority (e.g. stuff like basically saying spatialos wasnt up to our standards for ease of use).
There's been specific and reasonable alarm because SBS showed gameplay in 2015/16 that looked wildly better than footage shown in 2019.
and if what they showed in 2015/16 wasn't gameplay footage, they didnt make that clear enough.
assuming linear time, and assuming that SBS is not trying to make the "Springtime for Hitler" of video games, then better footage in 2015/16 is bad. The studio seems to regularly ban people and lock threads for the people/comments not being deferential enough to the studio.
All of this can easily lead to some basic questions, one of which is: will these people make a decent videogame?
so, when some people are hungry to see signs of a competent studio, and others are just hungry for blood, SBS gives us something that's a mashup of two sets of other people's work, with the expectation that this will excite and engage us about their game, but without being clear that this is two other people's work they mushed together in MSPaint2018.
I can see why people are giving them a hard time for this.
I just keep remembering times when there's someone who's very confident and arrogant about their intelligence but is not actually smart or right and then people who are smarter get tempted to pick on them.
In a way it makes me kind of sad, but good god do I ever want to also pick on them.
