UO would be cool, but I dont see how it could be done.

I used to really want an updated EQ. When I was playing seriously, I would have paid almost anything. I even went so far as to build a computer around loading all the EQ files into a RAM Drive to try to get it to perform better.
It didn't. It just had too many old cobwebs in the engine.
After I threw a lot of money at that computer (to much disappointment), I then came to realize even if EQ had the best engine in the world, it would only be shiny for a short time, and that the engine wasn't the worst of EQ's faults.
I still think back fondly of it, but I realize now, it was strictly in the moment, and there's no way to go back to that. Part of that experience was dealing with the crappy engine, and all us players working together to enjoy the game despite it's drawbacks. EQ has changed, the industry has changed, and I have changed - you can't just reskin the game and have it be the same thing - I don't think there's anything you can do to bring that experience back. All there is is moving forward.
I could write a long speech describing what has happened but MOST would not understand it,they still think vanilla Wow is real change...lmao.
FFXI was old school,WOW was NEVER old school.FFXI had the biggest change to an old school game ever and very much so for the worse,So bad matter of fact MANY players left the game at that point.
So many THINK that modernizing games is the way to go,i say not a chance in hell because we are catering to a very superficial crowd of FAKE gamer's.You know the kind that see FREE GIFT or TRIPLE XP weekend, they come running. They see a broken mechanic they exploit it,they see a chance to sit an AFK character and leech to max level in a day and think that is cool.
Yeah it is a very simple case of you get it or you DON'T !!.Geesh i bet most gamer's don't even understand what immersion is or why it should matter in a mmorpg, instead all they care about is ,i want to solo because i should have the right to solo if i want.
Devs would gladly cater to those people and throw in a cash shop as well because if they are that dumb they will likely buy into a cash shop as well.So yeah let's cater to worse gaming, cheaper games, cash shops, yeah seems like a brilliant idea,is this what we call "modernizing" games?
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I surprised myself . .but DAoC. There was sooo much I loved about that game. If it was redone I would likely play it. I loved SWG but don't know if I could do it again. UO was great but a modernization would have to leave the gameplay as is with the only QOL improvements being graphics, controls and UI. Just my quick thoughts
This is an interesting point. How "important" is the quality of life (QoL) features? Are they an integral part of a remake, or are they as malleable as graphical improvements? Are some acceptable and others not?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
EQ is the one I would most likely go back to but it doesn't need modernization. I just needs to get rid of krono and mercs need to be more limiting. ( only 1 usable by leader if you have more than 3 -4 in your group ).
I voted for SWG. It would need better graphics and need to go from 2d to 3d. Rest of the game was fine , especially the crafting.
I think a lot about how DAoC would be with a graphic engine that would allow 100s of players to fight without the massive lag that we got back in the day, or the invisible corners we would get hung up on near keeps or rocks. Having the graphics sharpened and updated QoL changes like the UI would just be a nice to have. I thought DAoC had pretty good style animations and great spell effects that would look good just as they are.
I think about games that I tried late, like AC or AO, that seemed like they had so much going for them but could get in to get into because the technology at the time was so limiting making the game hard to get lost in.
I realize these games had more going for them than graphics and that being graphically pretty would be just to appease the masses, but it's hard to go back playing blocks knowing what games are capable of now.
Maybe looking back at how awesome things were is a better reality than trying to relive them, but it would be cool to do it regardless.
If i had to pick a game from that list, it would go to Anarchy Online. Had too many super fond memories with friends in AO. Aside from that list, perhaps Final Fantasy XI. Imagine FFXI having a seamless, open world with graphics looking something like Black Desert Online or better, yummy.
I don't believe in re-heated food, and same applies to games too... I was loudly against the EE versions of Baldur's Gate/IWD/Planescape, just as the remastered classic adventures (DotT, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc.)
Honestly, no MMO developer today has my trust to do a good job of it. I don't trust that any could keep their "creative hands" off of the original systems for their own "improvements."
but on top of that there's the question itself: games I love, I love for a reason, and for what they are. I don't need "new" versions of them.
I'd love to have a playable version of Auto Assault though... ANY version.
Preferably the exact way it was, or maybe some minimal upgrades in the graphics, but not the gameplay. Graphics may be necessary, I think it didn't handle even HD resolution...
Is anybody aware of any way to play Star Wars Galaxies online today? I had a conversation with someone recently who mentioned that they have been playing it online, but I'm not likely to chat with them again for a while and I was wondering how they might have done this?
I would vote for DAOC, except I doubt it would be a success today.
The only way to level up was to grind mobs. Very few if any quests. If they updated DAOC with quests, then it wouldn't be the same.
And it was fairly hard to solo, since the set of skills required to really go fast grinding mobs were not on one character. I used to have a Cleric accompany me when grinding, but alone it would be very slow.
So I'm one of those who thinks that none of the old games would succeed today if just their graphics were updated.

After much thought on this thread i think i would love to see a new version of The Secret World without all the mistakes TSW (and SW Legends) have.
Mistakes? In TSW? [initiate Greta voice and pout] How dare you!
By the time they've killed it, those were gone, and they were subjective anyway.
To me, the main gripe was the awful long Scen grind for Tokyo access, which was removed, so I was happy.
This is about remaking a game, it's about leaving the game 100% the way it is/was and simply updating the graphics (engine) and QoL adjustments like the UI. Everything else would remain as it is/was.

I suppose it depended on which version of DAoC was released. Nowadays you could level up fairly easily doing quests. In the beginning, yeah... tons of grinding.
I'd want: Updated graphics, updated combat system, updated LI system, more alt-friendly grinds, stable servers for epic PvP of all sizes all over the 'Moors.
I voted DAOC but with Camelot Unchained on the way in 2025 I've got little hope it'll recapture what I enjoyed so much back then...partly because of me and the time I don't have to spend playing it but also it's just a thing of the past.

I'd like to see action or fps combat, a company tried SWG via the repopulation. I got a key because a former guildmate of mine did the voice overs and the game flopped hard and even in beta no one played it.
Also a new version of Elder Scrolls Online without that terrible combat/class system. Would prefer something better with Dynamic events instead of all that boring quest grind
I'd play Asheron's Call with modernized graphics. I'd like them to keep the original game sounds, though. There was something really immersive and charming about them.

It's a nice clarification, but I'd stay at my point - what can I say, I like the current graphics of my games, and prefer original looks over the revamps
Auto Assault is still the only nominee from me, simply because I'd love to play it again so much, I wouldn't care about graphics changes. Not to mention, in its original form it'd be really dated...
Just browsed through my stash of shots and short videos, I had a sub-average gear at that time so (especially at videos) I used 800x600.
On current displays (27" instead of the 17" CRT I had then) and resolutions they look like thumbnails...

This is a good point, too. Those games that get voted on, where does the expansions get in the way, or drive some players away? SW:G NGE or prior to that? For EQ, which expansion? I started EQ with the Kunark expansion (never played vanilla), but liked what Velious added, too.
So how far along do these old MMORPGs get remade?

In my head, I was initially thinking how the games are now. But now I'm thinking the games would be released as they were originally released and go through the same chain as progression as they did originally.

Good point, and this point was asked when LotRO made a re-boot, or some such, because apparently the Mines of Moria expansion was not well received.
For me, I when I think of a Reboot, I think of rebuilding the game the way it could have been done, like taking the base of the game, the mechanics, systems, rules, basically how things worked and flowed.
And taking that really solid and ideal framework that was enjoyed, and building a new game around it, sometimes with a whole new staff and company working on this as well.
Like for example. DDO, was an amazing game, riddled full of bugs, issues, and just directionless things tacked on to it, with a under powered staff that all they did was complain about the code and how hard it was to fix things. Which is a crying shame, because the game itself, could have been great.
And I think when people talk about a Re-make, or a Re-boot, they mean, making the game as great as it could have been.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

Isn't that what the new WoW server is doing?
Yes. Progression Servers." EQ does theirs that way, too.
