I think people need to take a step back when it comes to this game.
If one is expecting a direct link to the first two Baldur's gate games then DON'T buy it.
Not only was that 20 years ago (20 years!) it was also done by a different studio.
The game play will be "similar" and the setting "should" of course be Baldur's gate.
But this is a completely different studio's take on the game.
To put it in perspective, if one was to play a D&D module with one dungeon master they shouldn't expect the same "game" with another dungeon master.
In essence, Larian is the Dungeon Master and this is their campaign. Bioware already did their campaign.
Something I couldn't fit in this either was that Larian has talked to plenty of devs who worked on the previous titles. So they are gleaning info from the original makers, but Larian was always going to make this their own. I'm personally happy they are taking risks with changing up the BG formula instead of being scared to do so for fear of upsetting purists. That shows confidence, something that will be felt when the game itself goes live.
It's not 2.5D...it has full third person camera control...it's like the first thing they show off in the video after the cutscene and character creation...
I didn't like D:OS. Bust the oil barrel, light the oil, douse the fire with water, electrify the water, that one-trick pony got old for me faster than I could appreciate the clever writing.
It's disapointing that they're doing that same gimmick in BG3, because Larian seems to rely heavily on it for balancing their combat. However, I know that a lot people seemed to like those mechanics in D:OS, so I'm happy with whatever brings a new generation into the world of Forgotten Realms. I'm just not convinced that BG is in good hands with Larian as evidence of the gameplay so far appears to be little more than a good mod for D:OS.
But isn't that a bit "dungeons and dragons?" Players used to do that stuff all the time.

I mean I do see similarties between DOS:2 but it was a great game, and Im happy to play a game that uses that receipe in a different setting. Also graphically BG3 looks to be a couple notches above DOS:2.

Yeah, it's true. It just feels to me that they design too many encounters specifically for that mechanic.
To me it would be like playing D&D and every time the DM throws an encounter at me the first questions I have to ask are "Okay, is there water on the ground? What about oil? Is anything on fire? Are there any barrels? What's in the barrels?"
It becomes very one dimensional, to me...
Yeah I see your point and there is a danger of that here.

I don’t know why people are so worried that BG3 might be too similar to Divinity.
Divinity got its inspiration from Baldurs Gate, the two games are actually quite similar because Larian was thinking of BG when designing it. The mechanics are basically the same.
The main difference between the two games are the art style, Divinity being more cartoonish. It’s also more on the rails compared to BG, so I hope in that respect BG3 is more similar to the original.
I really liked the freedom you had in BG, this should be its main selling point. I hope they get this right.

Yeah I agree. When they first did it with DOS1 it was a very cool addition to the CRPG genre. By DOS2 I was getting sort of tired of almost every fight being about that.
Not to mention the fact that in my personal experience I just don't run into a lot of oil barrels everywhere I go.
I think they justifiably got a lot of praise about it after DOS1 and it then became their go-to feature and they kind of overdid it.
I don't mind it being part of BG3 but I sure hope they tone down the frequency.

Both Divinity games are weird overpriced games.
When I recently discovered same team is behind BG:3 and saw video from PAX I can say only one thing - RIP BG:3 ... or better say D:3?
Yeah I see your point and there is a danger of that here.
According to this person who saw a ~3 hour presentation in new york, Baldur's Gate 3 will have less reliance on elemental "there are barrels with flammable materials around" and more interaction with the environment.

All I have to say is woot! I really liked what I saw and read about BG3.
I was surprised to see the "Dragon Age" camera style instead of them keeping DOS camera but I won't complain about it. Larian is aiming higher than nostalgia with BG3.
I also liked how close to the 5e ruleset they are trying to be. I've been waiting for years for a proper 5e video game and it seems I'm going to get it.
I can't wait to try the early access and see the final product.

reading this makes me belive we are in the age of mediocrity, anything passable is good enough, we can't get great because no one is capable of delivering this anymore.
This game looks really good and I know Larian will make sure its an amazing experience but from somebody that got into PC gaming with games like Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale I think Obsidian the makers of The Pillars Of Eternity series would have been the best choice.
Especially since PoE almost ruined BG for me. It's hard to go back and play the originals when Obsidian did such a masterful job of modernizing the system while leaving it feeling true to the original. I think BG3 is still going to be a good game, but I don't think it's going to be what I think BG3 should be.

After watching PAX I’m going with the position that it is/can be a good D&D game but isn’t/doesn’t feel like a Baldur’s Gate game.
I think that’s the best I can sum it up for now.
