imageThe Hits & Misses of Sony's PlayStation 5 Presentation

Aside from Mark Cerny's presentation, Sony's marketing for the PlayStation 5 has been a bit low key. Gamers everywhere have been looking forward to more details on the console or to just see the damn thing for some time now. Yesterday, Sony finally delivered. How did it go? These are some of the hits and misses of the presentation.

I'ma be real here... None of that looked like a departure from PS4, for me, which was already not that significant a departure from PS3. I've owned a PS4 for 6 years, and still have only played maybe 8 games on it... Are consoles just not for me, anymore? I played at least 100 on the PS3...

My only criticism - where the fuck is God of War?

Seriously. If you want me to buy it, give me a sequel to the amazing God of War 2018.

I'd say the biggest miss is not announcing pricing...

I actually like the design. Like, a lot. I think that is a seriously sexy console. Much better than the Series X trashcan.

I guess you also like the BMW I3 series ....

because that's what PS5 looks like to me - /shudder

I much prefer just one solid color - like black , and if it's not shiny - like matte that's a huge plus
Doesn't look like that at all.

the playstation has a sort of "sail" form and it looks like it's moving forward. Or embracing the wind depending on which side you look at it. But it has "motion."

    That looks like a box.

Sure, if it was a sleeker and more angular. That thing is too bulky and not sporty enough. It barely looks like a sedan anymore, and I'm purely a sedan guy.

After watching both Xbox and PS5 games preview, I realized how much I like Nintendo's games more and more.

If improved graphic means the "Future of Gaming", yeah you gonna love PS5.

Nintendo has always focused on gameplay more so than graphics.

Take Breath of the Wild - amazing game that doesnt need super high end graphics
Art style is far more important than graphical power, and Breath of the Wild is drop dead gorgeous because of its art style.

I have already complained about the size but its even worse then I thought. Bought first day editions of all consoles this gen, I’ll wait for a slim PS5 now later down the road.

One issue I have with the PS5 is it looks like it has to be vertical. I'd rather have it lie flat so it fits in my TV stand. Not that I plan on getting it. I largely stopped console gaming with the PS2. I got the PS3 mostly because it was a blu-ray player (seriously, at the time it was the cheapest player on the market).

to me both PS5 and Xbox X summed up below:

Definately like that router more than the fridge.

Anyhow did they mention anything about backwards compatibility? If I could play all my ps games I currently own on it I would probably buy it and sell my ps3 and ps4. A pipe dream I know esp for the ps3 games.

Do sequels warrant a whole new system to play these games? The yare going to be using the same engine as the game prior and for the most part you'll only get a new skin on top of the old game.

All this does from my perspective is jumpstart selling of games, people will be buying games at a dumbfounded rate just to play stuff on their new toy.

It does NOT matter if this system is better, faster, all that matters is does it play your games. My point is that most likely 99% of the new games could have been launched on the PS3.

Epic has already showcased several times their engine can dumbh down the polycount by a LOT and still look every bit as good,so there really shouldn't be a huge need for a better machine.

"loading times" now this is one good argument,i can buy that ,IF that is your argument for a new machine.
"price tag"Well imo they take a bit of a hit knowing how this will kickstart billions in new game sales, they will make up for it,especially Microsoft who is trying to garner a profit on everything.

An important aspect, the games,so far 99.9% of the games i have seen are not worth my time. The only game so far is in this list "Horizon" looks like it MIGHT be good,i am not buying a console for 1 game lol.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

How many games is it gonna take to make the gaming community realize we have reached a stagnant leap in next generation graphics? I’ve been gaming since Atari...trying to explain the generation leaps from Atari to current gen was mind blowing throughout the decades but now it’s reached a peak and the spinner kids generation refuse to believe this...we want better graphics!

If it has lots of JRPGs then my future of gaming belongs there. That's what i love the most about Playstation and Nintendo consoles. Don't care about graphics.

As for the design of the PS5, i really like it. Glad to see curves making a comeback.

Graphics have reached the point that they can be near photo-realistic. Sure, there will be more incremental improvements from here, but we've already made the big leap. Now what devs need to do is work on using available power for things like better AI, NPC behavior, weather patterns, etc.

Every gen I am waiting for shorter loading times, less loading screens, shorter install times, just instant playing. And every gen its taking longer and longer, its ridiculous. The only thing evolving is graphics it seems, everything else is stagnant, I wouldn’t call that next gen gaming.

??? Not sure if you are being sarcastic. There should at the least be shorter loading times on the PS5 since it has an SSD. installs are already really quick- downloading the games takes the most time. I would hope the loading screens are less prevalent on ps5 games as well since it is considerably more powerful than a ps4.

I've enjoyed my PS4 to date. I wasn't a Day 1 purchase for me, I probably waited a year or so to get into the PS4 - mostly waiting on the games to catch up. But I did get a PS4 Pro shortly after release - that was a mostly lackluster upgrade, but I wanted a second console as well for a new OLED TV I had purchased at the time, so certainly not going to ~not~ get the Pro edition for that.

I've only had two major gripes about the PS4:
    - No UHD Blu-Ray support, which the XB1 has had since the refresh
    - Loading times are OMG really bad. It takes Minutes to load up FFXV, for instance.

PS5 addresses both of those. I'm intrigued by the new controller as well.

A smaller gripe is the size of on-board storage. I was able to solve this with an external drive on the PS4, but annoying that the storage size isn't going to move upwards (at least on release) when I'm pretty confident that game install sizes definitely will. I cautiously wait to see what the full speed external storage options cost, I'm sure that will sting, or the inconvenience of having to shuffle titles between the on board storage and slower external storage that can't be played from.

I'm not really concerned about backwards compatibility - it's nice to have, sure, but if I really want to play the older games I'll load them up on an older console. PS5 will almost certainly replace my original PS4, so I'll still have a PS4 Pro in the house. Wife did make me unload my PS2/PS3 when we moved a couple of years ago, unfortunately, but I hadn't powered those on in years, so not a huge loss I suppose.

MS's Play Anywhere / Smart Delivery are great things for Microsoft, but not enough to get me to jump camp (at least as of yet, there's nothing that says consoles have to be a binary choice, I could own both if I wanted to). It would be nice for Sony to support something similar, but it won't keep me from getting a PS5.

I will likely order a PS5 on or shortly after release, for the 4K BluRay player if nothing else.

Size/design are fine, they get stuck in an entertainment center anyway and I never see them once I get them in. I had a feeling this generation would be large, just looking at the hardware specs they were going to need some pretty sizable (or loud, or both) cooling solutions.

I'm honestly surprised MS doesn't lean harder on Play Anywhere and XBox on PC. Sony doesn't have anything that can even get remotely close to that... Remote Play is a vastly inferior option than playing a PC version natively.
