Are we focusing on the wrong thing?

    "As long as I'm here"?

It sounds like he has considered not being here?
Joppa is usually more neutral in the way he words things.
With how many other VR team members have moved on this is where my thought process goes upon reading that quote.

No, it literally just means the only way they’ll get flying mounts is if he leaves. No reason to dig into that part if the statement. It’s an expression.

I hope you are right.  There have been a lot of people moving on.  Losing Chris would be a major setback.

Flying diminishes distances. That's simply a fact. It is better to preserve an illusion of space to help players feel they are playing in a bigger world.

If Everquest had flying or horses in the beginning no one would have experienced the world as it was meant to be experienced. Even then people begged spirit of wolf before they started running across Norath.

No I definitely am of the opinion that flying shouldn't be in the game.

Also part of the game is climbing skills. Flying mounts would bypass content.

They can be implemented in a way so that they ARE content and not just bypassing it.

Have no fly zones. Like anything indoors or underground. Magical force fields, magical ever present storms, natural weather effects, flying enemies...

Have a stamina bar for flying mounts so they can only go so far before needing to rest that would make it so you still need boats to cross oceans.

It's not hard to restrict where the flying mounts can be used.

The acquisition of mounts alone was really lazy in WoW pay 5k, level restricted, pay more for cold weather training for WotLK. Bah!

How about having to fly into a scar of the earth filled with wyverns to try and steal an egg to hatch and raise...

I think Visionary Realms already has a lot on their plate.

However an alternative to your idea is to introduce jets.  Have F-22 Raptors dog fight against Russian and Chinese invading Terminus.  Given enough time ALL CLASSES will get anti aircraft ground to air weapons to defend cities and bring them back to normal.

To not allow things to get too crazy abilities such as this shouldn't be allowed until level 50.  Can't have everyone running around with bazookas at level one, it would break the immersion.

Later expansions they can introduce Virginia Classes Submarines, but that's putting the cart before the horse.

This doesn't have much to do with the topic, but the Earth is flat....Just saying !!

Well if you want to be hyperbolic and nonsensical about it then I could say Star Citizen is the perfect example of a game where the "flying mounts" ARE the content.

Or, in case of Vanguard, it made players see areas they've never seen before, even after years of playing, because these areas have been so out of reach.

Granted, there wasnt much there. Still, it was very nice I could actually explore these areas for once.

Besides, even with flying mounts it still took ages. Vanguard was huge.

And there we go again, now I'm missing Vanguard again.
