EA Doubles Down on Star Wars: What I'd Like to See

imageEA Doubles Down on Star Wars: What I'd Like to See

EA only has the license until 2023, but it's my view that this change in approach is a signal that the company would like to keep that license, so I expect to see quite a few projects pop up between now and then to make up for some seriously lost time. With that in mind, if EA is going to be doubling down on Star Wars, these are some of the games I'd like to see.

On this day 17 years ago Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided launched. It would be a nice time to announce a new SWG MMO successor. Yeah it's a long shot, but I can dream.

With SWTOR still running, I doubt it. I would settle for a new KOTOR-esque game however.

EA has allot to do to fix their bad reputation. Jedi Fallen Order was a good start. Will be interested more in what they plan to do. This has to go beyond just the SW games.

I've been boycotting EA for 7 years now, so my greatest hope is that they lose the Star Wars license and more companies can start developing SW games.

However, I don't boycott EA for any ethical reasons (though, there are plenty of reasons to do so). I boycott them because they make mediocre games. Nearly every EA game I've played for the last 15 years or so has just left me disappointed - they tend to have a solid core game loop, but everything else sucks. The most common feeling I get when playing an EA game, from any studio, is "oh, ok, I'm just starting to get into the game now, great introduction..........and its finished". It pisses me off so much!

That said, I will be breaking my boycott to buy Skate 4. I loved the previous Skate games, and even though they were also quite disappointing in their design, the core skating mechanics and the open world meant I could ignore that and just have fun skating. especially in skate 3 with the skatepark editor.

Back on topic, the Star Wars games I most want to see:

    1) A single player RPG

Can't think of any that we've had since KOTOR2, and both KOTORs were pretty shit as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned. Sure, it got some of the roleplaying done really well, but the roleplaying was focused on personal relationships, which i don't care about in a game. But, the combat sucked, the worlds were small, and the personal choices were limited.

Ideally, this RPG would be a sandbox, open-world type of affair. EA is not capable of making such a game, so this will have to wait until they lose the license.

    2) SWG 2.0

SWTOR isn't even an MMO, let alone a sucessor to SWG. Given the lessons we've learned in the 17 years since SWG launched, it should be pretty straight forwards to design a new MMO that gives us the core essence of SWG, but with much needed improvements to world design, graphics, combat mechanics etc.

Again, EA is not capable of making such a game.

    3) Podracer

Loved the N64 game, played it to death. I like the fact it's been remastered, I just have to hope that it'll end up on the PC at some point.

    4) Elite: Dangerous with SW makeover.

ED is a cool game, lots of fun. However, its a bit of a nightmare for newbies and remains a grind. So, take ED, reskin it to Star Wars, and then start slimming it down and focusing the experience so that we have more time doing things. I'd love to actually have free-reign with the galactic civil war, lets actually see it play out across the galaxy. Lets be able to ambush imperial star ships coming to invade a planet. Lets have the empire chasing me and my rebel buddies.

    5) Total War: Star Wars

Creative Assembly did a great job importing the Warhammer IP into their style of RTS. I feel like they could do a great job with star wars too. Space battles would be tough, but I'd be fine if they limited it to ground battles. Would love to be able to order AT-ATs, squads of storm troopers etc around a large battlefield.

    6) Jedi Power Battles

This was (iirc) a PS1, side-scrolling adventure game. Me and my brother used to play this coop a lot and it was great fun. Plenty of player skills, no reliance on gear, you basically just got to go to some iconic locations and fight your way through them with a selection of jedi.

Cheap and easy to make, so EA could definitely do it. Wouldn't be a smash hit, but its the sort of game that lets you jump straight into the iconic stuff rather than having to play for hours on end.

    7) MOBA?

I'm not even sure what genre this would be. Basically an MMO battleground / scenario game, with a deep combat system underlying it. Think Warhammer's scenarios, or SWTORs battlegrounds, except that's the entire game. You need a deep combat system to keep it interesting long term, and it needs to be built around horizontal progression as its a PvP game. Perhaps scale the numbers up to something like Battlefield (64v64) or if they can go bigger and reach MMO numbers (500+ players) then even better!

Something along the lines of SWG please.

SWTOR (always pronounced "sweater" in my brain) is good for what it is but it was developed during that period of time when everything was made to emulate WoW. I think our souls are all ready for a true "live in the universe" type game in the SW setting, which is essentially what SWG was about.

Just an FYI, Disney fully intends to renew with EA.  Many people at Disney and some investors have already discussed EA's large resource base and capital to make better games as a primary reason. Reading between the lines though, what they are really saying is EA is likely to provide us a better financial package with incentives to make us more money than anyone else.

That's an easy one, just ignore it. Not everyone hates Star Wars in it's entirety due to a few mistakes along the way.

Star Wars Outer SkyRim... So, the play on words aside, I would like to see a true open world RPG (not mmo) like Skyrim but in the Star Wars setting/lore/story. I don't think we've seen anything like this, as far as I can recall.

Why would you say that they don't even appeal to the same kind of people at all?

There is a new LOTR MMO is the works. That's two MMOs with the same IP. Why not SW.

Interesting and grammatically correct use of the term "double down". In the UK the media reporting someone is "doubling down" is media speak for saying "you should apologise and retract this", while pretending to not be taking a side in the issue themselves. Because of this you will not hear anyone in the public or private sector actually say they are doubling down on a policy, decision etc.

I think the SW games are a mixed bag, like gaming itself; only pick the ones you like the sound of after they launch.

I'd like to see them continue making content for Battlefront 2. I recently got into it and found out it's "content complete". Sad :(

SWG 2.0 please! Updated graphics and everything. How can they not see that this is what people want? ?(well, it's what I want, isn't that enough)? :)

So, there is a new LOTR MMO coming and once I heard that I started flying, enjoying the blue skies until... I read somewhere that it will be actioncombat based, and just like that, I was shot down from my dreamflight... ? :(

I for one would love to see more Star Wars games.  We may get some turds but a good Star Wars game is something I embrace.  Star Wars Fallen Jedi was a great experience and I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming game Squadrons.

Even the low quality schlock like TLJ or Rise?
I guess I am one of those people who just adore the whole franchise without nitpicking and trying to overthink the plot. I like it for the cute adorable droids and I loved the droid in Rogue One too. I thought Rogue One was an excellent story too.

I am just pleased as punch every time a Star Wars movie comes out. I watch it like 3 times if I can and simply enjoy the stories.

EA could package a turd, slap the Star Wars label on it, and they would sell a million easily. Other than maybe teh FInal Fantasy geeks, I haven't seen so many sheep that follow an IP so religiously.

I'm not overly fond of the Star Wars movies.  They're great, but also they are basically 2nd rate space opera with a focus on cinematic sequences.  I think there are better examples of either science fiction, fantasy, or space opera that would have been as suitable for such an epic.

I've also not been a fan of games made based on other media, it has seemingly always been a step down from the original.  Star Wars games have given me this impression that it is mostly a tool for driving more revenue to the movies.  (I'm also not a fan of movies made based on games.  If you really must know why, take a look at the Mario Brothers movie).

Rather than another Star Wars game, I'd prefer to see something more original.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
