We have quite a few of our favorite sci-fi franchises that have already received the MMORPG treatment: SWTOR, Star Trek Online to name a few. However, there is still room for more. While we've seen studios dabble in other franchises, such as Stargate, we've not really had a major franchise get the full MMO treatment since the previously listed two on the market right now. Here are a few I'd love to see finally get their due in the MMO world.

I played that now defunct Battlestar Galactica mmo for a bit a few years ago. I somewhat enjoyed it, but after a few levels it seemed to become very pay to win game & was mostly PvP. I don't enjoy open world PvP so never invested much into it.
I always enjoyed the Babylon5 tv series, but never gave much thought to it becoming a mmo. I certainly think it has enough rich backstory & deserves one though.
I've played SWTOR in the past & still think it has some of the best class storyline arcs in an mmo, but I considered it more SW than scifi mmo given the very limited space options. I hear better things lately about SWTOR but I left soon after I had invested a substantial of time & resources into my Companions & the game then changed Companion mechanics which nullified all my efforts & had no compensation.
Star Trek Online imo is still one of or the best space sci-fi mmos to date, if a fan of Star Trek, & is generous with its F2P offers to be only met with almost equal quality of pretty bad customer service, developers that don't seem to care about fixing game "bugs" unless monetized or brand new, including more & more online gambling, there's even Weapon packs which are a gamble within a gamble since all "random", & less new content being added lately, Cryptic has actually spent a good amount of time taking away game content over the last couple of years. STO is very much a two steps forward one step back lately.
Good small article, fun read, gets the imagination stirring & many what ifs.
Designing the game like a typical MMO would be a mistake - a static world / worlds just doesn't fit with the story so it would seem really fake and would lose the spirit of the series.
Instead, what I'd do is have the fleet as "the world", which would always have some quests, housing, trading and other features. There would always been some small scale combat areas to simulate the psylon scouts / attacks.
However, I would have the fleet continually moving through the galaxy. Maybe once a month, move the fleet to a new location, simulating the jumps and the search for a new home. So, one month, in addition to the fleet staple, you'd have a new planet to explore, or a new asteroid belt to farm. Give each server community targets, like gathering fuel for the fleet, or searching for hidden lore, or wiping out psylons at their base.
In more general terms, I still want a good Star Wars MMORPG. SWG was great back in the day, but its now really old and it never offered a good Jedi experience. SWTOR wasn't an mmo.
I've also fallen in love with Altered Carbon and I think that could be a good background setting for an MMO
Warhammer 40k has also never received the love that it should have done in the gaming world, but it would be great to have a proper MMO. I know a few devs have started down this road, but none of them have reached the finish line. Large scale combat, ground and space, troops, bikes, tanks, air planes, space ships....it's got everything!
I forgot about it TBH. I remember following it and then poof. Might have been one of the better MMOs too, but around that time I was already used to hype train named the disappointment express.
Blade Runner would be fun.
Lost in Space may not have enough in it, but worth mentioning.

I also loved the Species Imperative series by Julie E. Czerneda. She created such an imaginative series with unbelievable bio species and biospheres. Unlikely friendships would mean great grouping prospects and I suppose PvP. I insist on owning the fish tanks as part of the furniture in my game house. No hidden dimension please.
I would also recommend the Alastair Reynolds space pirates stories in the Revenger series. Simply because I loved his imagination regarding the travelling methods and the creation of a universe that has very different properties from ours. Using sails has got to be such a cool way to travel in space and that reminds me of Deep Space 9 when Sisko took the space solar sailboat out.

WhO is going to make it Blizzard,Square Enix,Rockstar,Epic Games,Tencent,Gamigo,Bioware,NOBODY.The market is literally flooded with Indie developers,do you want another favorite IP ruined by some inept developer,i don't.
For MANY years i dreamed of a Jason and the Argonauts or Journey to the center of the Earth type mmo. Finally some mickey mouse Indie dev did a Jason game and of course it was terrible. The closest i have seen is Atlas with Cyclops and giant Crabs.
Point being everything in our wish list is just a money grab for developers, they will gladly make your game,it won't be good but hey they love our money.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
STO is so messed up with the F2P paradigm and gamblebox mechanics it makes me want to cry.
I think it would be a billion dollar MMO if they did it properly for PvP.

Dune
Starcraft - Even if they used the WOW models and engine, I would certainly play.
Still have the disk for the Beta of Stargate, it would have been a great game.
And I would like to see Tabula Rasa return, it had so much promise.
