Any mmorpg that relies on old fashion combat mechanics is going to flop in the day; people expect more from the genre after 20 years.

I'm not so sure about that, classic is classic, old school is old school, and many people liked what they were back then and weren't really looking for all these "modern" changes. Reading what you wrote i'm now looking into this game, sounds like it might be a comfortable shoe.

There are so many people who love old games that as long as it's a good game it should do fine.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

People expect a variety of things. It's as though tastes vary. There is at least as much clamouring for the old school as the innovate.

Well we liked what they were because we had no choice, devs were giving us all they knew and game engines were rather weak.

Now devs have all the tools and tech they need to deliver AAA games.Every single system should be done really well, there are no excuses anymore.

There are some old school design ideas that imo were just bad,not a personal reason so much but more so because they don't make any sense. The EQ franchise did a LOT of things that do not make sense,so this might be an opinionated area, idk why some would accept  ideas that don't make sense but to each their own i guess.

To put it simply, there is no game present or old school that had all of it's systems done really well,so we need to see a HUGE step up in quality of mmorpg's.

Except for the other axis that you miss "money."

edit: which is, by the way, what AAA refers to.

Didn't we have a choice back then? You make it sound like we all had guns to our heads. Personally, I freely chose to play EQ 1. I even paid every month to continue playing.

It seems to me that we had more variety among 20 MMORPGs back then, than we do now with over 500 MMOs (no RPG). My perceptions/rememberings could be wrong, but I think I'm not too far off.
