How are these things for gaming? I feel like trying something new.

I dont know of any vertical gaming mouse. I use one for my work PC. I was getting to the point I though I was going to need surgery I was having so much pain. Funny how switching one device and I am pain free now. I really wish someone would make a vertical gaming mouse. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Problem with them in relation to gaming is that they don't have enough programmable buttons.

They are great for daily use but it didn't work well, for me, for gaming.

Evoluent VM4R VerticalMouse 4 Right Hand Ergonomic Mouse with Wired USB Connection Regular Sizeclear

This one has 3 extra buttons you can program

This one the button on top is awkwardly placed so you cannot use it with an assigned choice even if it has three extra buttons you could reprogram.

3 extra buttons is actually doable for some games. But the 12 programmable buttons on the sides that a normal gaming mouse has going to be hard to pass up but for the good of our hands it is worth considering.

I am gaming with a Logitech MX vertical ergonomic at the moment:

    - It takes about 2 weeks to retrain your muscles because you move your wrist along a different axis (you avoid what is called ulnar deviation), and use your arm more for up/down movements.

    - It will be uncomfortable a couple weeks more in high APM, fast paced games because when pressing a button, you don't have the counterforce from the table, you need to apply counterforce with your palm (clenching).

After the first month it gets comfortable enough to not notice at all, but still I do not think it is better than a regular mouse for gaming, especially for fast-paced games. EDIT: but as Nanfoodle mentioned, it is a life saver and definitely better if you have wrist problems

For me, a better anternative would be this: https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/mice/sculpt-ergonomic-mouse/l6v-00001

or something equivalent. Having some tilt and being round enough to comfort the wrist but not so much that it results in discomfort due to "clenching".
Interesting. I was thinking of getting one mostly due to my aversion to all things standard mouse. I don't know, I just don't like the device for gaming at all. Maybe for gfx art or something like that, but not for gaming, nah-uh.

Tbh, I don't need that much, I'm rather economical with my layouts. I pay more attention to the position of buttons. My previous mouse had only like 2 on the side(could be more, I used those 2), but they were positioned very nicely. My current one has like 6 or more on the side, but I actually think that's inferior to what I had.

Ergonomy, ease of use and functionality are keys. Don't even know about DPI and such details anymore, I'd rather not hassle with that.

You will definitely not like the Logitech vertical then, the side buttons are placed high and are awkward. I read that J-Tech is much better in this respect:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/J-Tech-Digital-Ergonomic-Adjustable-Sensitivity/dp/B07SPDRWF9/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=J-Tech+Digital+Wired+Ergonomic+Optical+Mouse&qid=1598979591&sr=8-3&tag=19ghuk-21

Also much cheaper. Unfortunately not sure if you can still find it in stock or they made a follow-up model.
Any other general mice you can suggest?

Doesn't the clenching cause other problems when you keep doing that for long hours. Applying a counter force by clenching your palms will hurt your forearm . I have some experience with this when I use looms while knitting.

This does not sound like a position to hold while playing.

The mouse might work for using the computer for long hours while working but it does not sound like it will work for gaming.

I use a gaming mouse too and I use it because I am not fast enough to move my hands to use keys on the keyboard so the 12 side buttons that I use with my thumb is god sent. I am quite adept enough to be considered by others who have praised my quick reactions when healing and removing debuffs in FFXIV. I recall that game you had to be real quick and that mouse actually made me competent.

I was hoping to find some other type of mouse for gaming to help with these old hands of mine. I use the controller for games which are turn based as they are easier on the hands.
