As a PC gamer, I stopped liking the franchise after Morrowind. It is blatant and irritating that the following editions were designed for the console and as usual are terrible translations onto the PC. I'm tired of the industry dumbing down PC games in order to appeal to the console and mobile crowd. We are separate audiences and we deserve targeted client software.

Really isn't though. PC RPGs, especially MMOs have been dumbing themselves down without console releases.

Because that's the general direction of the industry. The mainstream PC gaming audience isn't all that intelligent either.

    That's really not true though.

First of all, there are plenty of people who play pc games who aren't looking for intricate, complicated, game play. There are plenty of simple games on PC.

And while I do have some disappointment with a few things that the later Elder Scrolls games changed from Morrowind, they also brought a lot of great changes. Like actual characterization for npc's, individual dialogue for npc's.

Here is a video from a guy who rebuts an earlier video about someone saying "elder scrolls games have become dumbed down. Was made a while back. He does make some good points.

Morrowind is what catapulted them to the top of every gamer's list.

Having two gaming boys this is of interest.

Morrowind i put in hundreds upon hundreds of hours into that baby. My boys wont' touch it.

Oblivion i played it much less, but played it more after i closed all the gates and it became a world to explore and play in proper. My boys played it a fair bit.

Skyrim i barely touched it and my boys played it like i played Morrowind, to death.

Online we all played it about the same, not much.

You bring up an interesting point. Not everything needs to be intricate or deep.

I think even most gamers have a hunger for both, entirely dependent on mood. I want super deep games like Path of Exile or the original Guild Wars, and I also want more simple stress-relieving experiences like Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2.

When I want to think, I play Fire Emblem. When I don't want to think, I play Fire Emblem Warriors. Different games for different moods.

Sigh, you are partially right I can just get fed up thinking about it. Consoles have to my mind helped dumb down PC games, but without consoles a solely PC gaming industry would have still gone for shallower, easier to play games. I think the only development that has shown any signs of turning the tide is indie. What do you think of indie on consoles, I really know nothing about it?

"industry would have still gone for shallower, easier to play games"

Once the masses were introduced and the potential of $$ that could be obtained, yeah, for sure, blame wow, blame consoles, blame cell phones, the reality is there are a lot of people out there that just want to be entertained, not game so much and get gud, just push button i win.

Wow launches and all any company saw was $$ it's why the mmorpg world exploded with a new mmorpg every other week and they got stupider and stupider about making them easy af.

Then realized people don't want to play they just want to buy their way through a cash shop.

Then couch players, oh i just want to lay on the couch and push a button.

Then ADD gamers got their nickle and dime games on their phones.

hmmm, I wouldn't go that far. There are intelligent and "not" intelligent people in any hobby/past time.

I would also go so far as to say that just because someone is intelligent doesn't mean they want "deep" anything.

I have a friend who is absolutely wicked intelligent. Ivy league school, top grades, reasonably successful in her career.

And yet she prefers very mainstream television shows. One of her favorites was Dharma and Greg. Not very deep or any complexity or anything ground breaking.

I would never judge someone's intelligence on the things they liked. Especially since I tend to favor Howard Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences."

Indie games tend to overwhelmingly cater to genres I don't like. 2D platformers, horror games, rogue-likes, rogue-lites, and survival games. I just don't have any interest in the vast majority of what the hipster-space has to offer. It doesn't mean that I don't respect indie games, but I'm also the last person in the world to ask about them.

It doesn't matter whether it will release on PlayStation or not, it matters whether it will be fun or not.

I know man, that is why I spent hundreds of hours in Morrowind and only dozen or so in Oblivion and Skyrim. These hundreds of hours were however me playing Morrowind on Xbox. So, yeah.....

But Microsoft platforms will include anything that can run xcloud, they have a (shitty) work around for iphones too. They’ve even discussed making a chromecast-like dongle for your tv so you can use xcloud.

I think they’re going to use market terms to not ‘scare’ people (e.g., we don’t want it to just be an xbox exclusive), but that’s technical true if they’re looking at any device (except playstation and switch) as part of their ecosystem.

People are putting WAY too much stock into this guys answers.  It will be up to MS to decide when the time comes. And they will always release on the PC as well as the XBOX.

I'd expect a timed exclusive at the very least.  That is unless Sony has this unexpectedly massive market share.  And by market I'm including PC and cloud based gaming.

    It means nothing.

Morrowind was designed for PC and it's controls were awful on PC. You are tired of the industry "dumbing down" pc games to appeal to consoles, and I'm tired of people using that lame excuse. A lot of PC only games from back in the day played terribly, no wonder they had to be limited to mouse clicks only. If anything, being able to simulate a DPAD via WASD is a major improvement for PC games.

What? How is a game controller going to compare to the complexity allowed with a mouse and keyboard? Even Conan Exiles has made drastic changes in support of console controllers. I don't know if I'll call it dumbing down, but consoles are definitely far more limited in functionality than PCs.

i'm not talking about complexity. Morrowind was clunky as hell. On the same note, games like Baldurs Gate were point and click because they were clunky too. A/CRPGs on console played well on a controller even back then, but people somehow thought that was impossible, even though it was happening since the 90s.

Sony likes to do their "exclusives" so I find no problem with Microsoft using the same tactic & since they bought Bethesda unless there's a stipulation in the contract I'd think the Elder Scrolls would be fair game then. That being said I only play video games on computer so if Microsoft did such an an action it probably wouldn't affect me too much. I'm sure in the end the $ numbers will be crunched & the decision will be made by that.
