Eh still cheesing the system. I'd rather not do that.
The time sink is mainly finding and clearing the crypts not the transportation (unless wind keeps coming against you).
If you meant the Bifrost method I mentioned well it is and there's no wrong either way you go. Depends on your playstyle and what you enjoy.
For me it's first building things then exploring and sailing however the one thing I dislike the most in this game is the no porting ore. Working on a fairly big dock right now!
I get that the devs did this to make people use the boats more and for "emergent gamepley" however I do not need this forced no ore porting to make me do these things. I will still get emergent gameplay even if I do port ore, it's about the only thing I cheese in the game lol.
I don't even use the tricks to "break bosses" but do the them normal way!
I saw a suggestion on the steam forums about ore and not being able to port it that I really thought would be great.
It was why not have the ability to have an npc sail the ore to your base for you that takes xx time etc. It's a little odd that there are no other vikings in the game or npc villager like minecraft so to speak.

Unfortunately, the daylight attack wrecked my Karve. I HATE that we can't swim underwater! Most of my materials sunk. I ended making a crafting bench and hoe to raise up the land so I could at it.
The quick workaround for this I use, is just to make a stair bridge over the items. Then just jump off, you will sink and autoloot everything underwater. Deeper it is, just go higher with the diving board. Its quick and more precise I think.
Don't think you can do it way out in ocean unless you can find a rock or something shallow enough to put a workbench on.
Had to do this a couple times because of trolls. Seems trolls can kill your boat even if you park it kind of far from shore.
I also liked @Torval suggestion of having different tiers of portals so that you can transport ores with higher tiers.
I agree it's a big time sink, but I don't want it to be easily accessible either. It's a survival game, time sinks are inevitable.
Indeed I just don't need this particular timesink and it doesn't really bring any kind of fun factor or immersion even for me.
I bought the game on Feb 19, 2021 and have since then 267.8 hours total play time according to steam so.. no extra timesinks needed here!
About the trolls my base is bordered by the sea and a river and I seen a couple troll now and then try and attack via the sea standing in water that comes up to their chest! Was pretty funny/impressive.

Yeah @Torval and I were transporting a ton of iron last night from a Swamp far from our home and used the Longship and I am not a fan. We needed the extra storage space it provided, that was great and all but thing is not in the same league of handling as the Karve which handles like a dream is fast and very easy to turn and navigate through rocks and channels
That is also a problem for me. I built near the water in the meadows thought I had easy access to the ocean and other areas. I have 2/3 passages leading to the ocean.
Only 2 of the 3 passages are doable with the longship. The other one there's not enough room to rotate. All 3 have issues with hitting the bottom of the water. Especially when the water is agitated. One of the passages is really cool (with the karve at least). Its very long and goes by the mountains and meadow. Tried going through it with longship, and got stuck every couple seconds. Was not a fun ride xD
Having to constantly go off the ship, and pushing it myself getting wet gets frustrating fast. The worst situation is when I have to use the pickaxe to dig down.

If not I can tell you but it's alot to type so just let me know
Last week or so I have been working on my wall, made a sea wall and started work on my port/docks. I also got around to finding a 2 star wolf, taming it and breeding it till I got more 2 stars that wont vaporize with the daytime when let free.
I now have an army of 2 star wolves patrolling and protecting my main base....was quite a long evening taming this 2 star and bringing it to my base then sticking around till it bred at least 2 more 2 stars.
I also set up an auto breed cage so that as long as there's food in there they pop out more 2 star pups that then fall down to a lower pit area so the parent can keep popping out babies...I let the 2 parent wolves out now though since I have enough of them and it would be cruel to leave them trapped indefinitely!
Redone my earth wall
My port/dock area still a WIP. On the corners of the seawall I will be building some circular towers that have a functional spiral staircase inside them which is why the corners of the wall are round.
My 2*wolves about half of them

Personally I really like this video about taming 2 star wolves.
I used a mountain on the same landmass that my main base is on, made pit right on the border of the mountain and black forest and marked it on my map.
Then I made sure I had some sausages, cooked meat and honey ate one of each for more HP and ran around at night with my son finding wolf packs after about an hour or two we ran into a one star but messed up the one star run and we died due to lack of stamina.
We went back and he was gone but ran into a 2 star and this time we ignored the pack and just ran, lured the 2 star to our pit and jump down in the pit, made sure I had stamina pot this time and when the 2 star finally slipped down into it I jump out. My son took care of the rest of the wolf pack and I helped him finish them off once the I was out of the pit.
Did the whole crouch lose, aggro toss in some meat. During the day I built a stake fence around the pit in a large enough area and built a cabin around the pit.
This way we were safe from wandering mobs and even had a nice fire going on the inside of the cabin! While I was doing that and staying with the 2 star so he doesn't despawn during the day my son made another pit a little further away and lured a regular no star wolf in it tamed it and brought it over to put in my 2 star pit once the 2 star was tamed.
Let them mate make babies and while the first two pups were no star the 3rd one was a 2 star! Let more breed until I had 3 two star pups.
Ran them to my base with my boy leading a little ahead to aggro any critters so the wolf don't wander off to kill stuff and die.
Once at my base I made sure to set up the auto breeding cage and made sure to breed a few more 2 stars just in case some bug out and despawn like the original did at some point.
On breeding if you breed a no star and 2 star you can get either no star or two as pup but if you breed two 2 stars then you will get 2 star pups every time.

Just got me a 2 star pig, tried to use harpoon to get him on a karve to transport as they dont have a follow command. Was a pain but eventually got him on it and the porker jumped off right as I started to sail off. I probably should have tried the longship as its bigger.
Wound up using the harpoon to drag him all the way home.

I believe in this instance, that is not a "harpoon", but rather a "boar spear"

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Worked more on my port and it's looking like this right now. Will add a couple more later on to show the dock closer up.
There will be two places you can dock a longships and these will be covered so you will sail into the boathouse and I have currently 3 docks for some Karve and I may make a fourth, not sure yet. Might make the small unworked area on the left a fishing spot.
I also worked on the seawall and made a place holder "fence/gate". I should be able to get through the two wooden gates with a Karve but when using the longship I will have to destroy the 3 wooden gates and rebuild them behind me.
I hope in the the future updates there will be more building blocks and more gate/portcullis options! In the pic it looks like that worktable is floating but it actually on a 2floor piece platform on the end of two ironwood posts! Will likely remove it at some point when done working the area.
EDIT:
There a few close ups.
The longship dock. Think these two side by side dock will eventual be covered as I think I might build a boathouse up around them. Thus the use of wood.
Karve docks, I have 3, which will not be covered thus the use of stone more.
Haven't worked on the towers yet but I did learn how to do this to have a working spiral staircase in them. Not done obviously but you can walk right up them without sprinting. Still experimenting.

@Asm0deus my heavens that is such a wonderfully built port. It is so well planned out. Did you like draw some plans before you made it? It does not look like something you threw together in a rush. I really admire what you have done. BRAVO!!!
I would love to make a port, but the longship is way too annoying to turn in confined spaces.
Yeah it sure doesn''t turn like the Karve! That's why the two docks for the longship are placed so it mostly a straight sail in and out with the seawall.

No, no drawings ahead if time. I had the idea of making a port there when I first started building at the site so the idea has been percolating in my subconscious for a little while though!
The next step is extending the paved area just before the docks and thinking about how I want the boat house for the two longship docks to look like.
I also am thinking of making railings made of iron wood but will have to run some test to see which looks better, iron wood or regular wood
Right now we have more building blocks using regular than we do for stone or metal etc
I think next though I will work on the towers!

Probably stamina and the berserker is doing 3 consecutive swings probably be harder to parry or easier to make a mistake while trying to parry.
I dont really know as I just been bow kiting, done enough corpse runs. I find it easier to walk and avoid troll to let stamina regen with ranged when I am already at a distance than if I was in close for melee and running out of stamina and trying to do the same.
One thing I have noticed is the fuling berserkers seem to close the gap faster than the trolls when I do try to tactical retreat to regen stamina. Not sure if its because all the tree obstacles in black forest and few trees in plains.
After a few days of work gathering iron and more rock I got this done! Was quite a task to build and it's not perfect but I learned some do's and don'ts making this!
The circular stairs inside.
If I was to do the whole thing over, wall included I would definitely make the corner of my wall round too.
Would make it much easier to reinforce the structure to build high. There's Iron poles and iron doors hidden inside the stone brick to be able to build higher.

You need to breed the wild 2 star to make baby 2 stars. The wild 2 star wolf you tamed will always run off and despawn but the bred ones wont.

The longship needs a lot of space to rotate unlike the karve.
