How do you unsubscribe from a thread these days?

I swear there used to be a feature where one could unsubscribe from a discussion; there for ending notifications of replies. No I am not talking about email notifications, those don't work either it seems; I'm referencing the notifications icon at the top left of the page.

Now it seems once you comment in a popular thread you are doomed to be notified of the 100s of replies daily from that one thread, even after you have no interest in that discussion.
